This article discusses the importance of academic skills in higher education for students. It explores the significance of communication, time management, team working, leadership, and planning skills and how they can benefit students in their career prospects. INTRODUCTION
Academic skills are such capabilities of person that encourage the student to learn more
things and find new opportunities in career after completing their education. Academic skills are
beneficial in raising confidence of person and enhancing their self-esteem (Saputra, Komariah
and Natsir, 2017). Employability skills are such skill that encourage employer to hire such
talented people in organisation. This make them deserving and employable person in business
unit. Employability is highly depended upon capability of person and their experience or
knowledge. Sometimes person learn from experience and sometime individual learn from their
own capabilities. These are also known as foundational skills which make the person unique
from others. Employer wants to work with talent those who are supportive and have ability to
work better, if individual do not have that abilities then they do not get selected in big
organisations. Present study will explain employability skills and its usefulness to individual. It
will present importance of these skills to people those who are studying in higher education. It
will describe employability skills and its significance to person.
TASK
Employability skill are also known as soft skills which works as building blocks in the life
of person, these skill provides opportunity to individual to get more jobs and promotions in
business unit. People those who are studying in colleges and universities develop their skills so
to get career opportunities in near future (Ahmad, 2016).
Communication skill
This is considered as essential skills that can be defined as ability of student to convey
message to other in simple and clear language. This exchange of message can be done in verbal
or written manner. Written communication means informing to other via mail or through
documents (Importance of Communication Skills for Students , 2017). Whereas verbal
communication means exchanging of ideas orally. It is very important for learner that to have
good interaction or communication skill. This make them able to make other understand with the
message without creating any kind of confusion (Cabral and Dhar, 2019). When student ask
questions with teachers then lecturers answer them but if student is unable to make them
understand their quarry then teacher may not be able to resolve their issue in such condition
student will not be able to get good marks or grade in their class. In higher studies learner has to
read with other students to get more information related to topic. Poor communication may

decrease their confidence that affect their academic performance to great extent. Employers like
to hire people those who are able to interact with other workers easily. This improves department
working and operational efficacy of company also raised. Hence if student is not good in its
communication then individual may miss many employment opportunities that affect their career
as well (Din, 2020).
Communication skill of student is highly measured in a manner that how and individual
is raising questions and how a person in behaving with others when they have to work together.
University student needs to be good communicator that helps them in working well in group
assignments and prepare group presentation easily. If there is clear and systematic
communication, then learner can learn many things that prepare them to get more jobs. Higher
education helps student to develop their communication skills but great coordination capability
makes the person able to face challenges of globalised world. If the person is able to interact with
other greatly then it makes them more friendly that develops confidence of students. This creates
opportunities of career development for student (Russo-Abegao and Glassey, 2018).
Time management skill
This is essential skill that has important role in the life of student. This skill makes the
person able to learn many things fast and schedule their work properly. As university students
have to complete their curriculum within specific period of time. If they fail to finish it on time,
then it may affect their semester results. Apart from this, they are responsible to complete their
assignments, academic project within given deadline alone with their exam preparation which
sometimes create problematic situation for them (Farista, Bharati and Fitriati, 2018). If
individual is unable to manage their work on time, then it results in getting less score and even
create obstacles in their learning as well. Good time management skill makes the student unique
or different from others.
Time management is considered as skill that is helpful for children and analysing the
priority task and finish it accurately on time. As kids or learners have to manage their work
related tasks alone with their studies. Many times students of higher education miss their
household work to manage their studies. Or many times they fail to complete assignment on
time. This time management skill makes them discipline and they start understanding their
responsibilities. This develops good habit among learners that makes them more presence in
every situation (Hulten, 2017). Good time management is essential to avoid frictions and finding

timely solution of each problem. When person starts utilising their single minute properly then
individual becomes able to get sufficient time for rest, study and other activities. When there is
systematic time management then individual feel energized and get more time to spend with their
love one.
When students are not having time management skill then person do not care about
current situation and leave things for tomorrow (Compton and Pearson, 2016). When they have
to study they do not do it and finish assignment late that create pressure on learners and they feel
stressed. This sometimes create depression situation for them because at last burden creates and
individual fails to finish task with quality that results in getting low score in their class. Time
management makes person self-discipline that is very essential to gain success in market.
Team working skill
Team working can be defined as performing variety of activities together and complete
task with quality. Leader of team delegate duties to each members and ensure that particular
person has ability to finish that work with efficiency. This is the skill that promotes learning
among students and they become more productive. When it comes to employment then each firm
like to work with person that is very supportive and have ability work in team well. Each
organisation pre has some teams and people become part of that team. If person is not able to
manage work in team, then it may create problem to business (Saputra, Komariah and Natsir,
2017). Hence to gain more employment opportunities there is need to have good team working
skill in person. This can be developed in college and universities as teachers give group projects
to all people so that they discuss on given topic and find some innovative ideas. Contribution of
each member helps in finishing that project in significant manner that helps student in getting
more marks in exams. Team working skill enhance participation of person in group project that
helps them to learn new things and get more knowledge related to subject matter.
Team working make student aware with issues that might be faced by them in external
environment and they find out solution to face these issues. Many time students do not like to
work in group projects because of lack of trust. But this thing create workload on person because
if they complete entire work individually then it would not give such positive outcome that might
come from working in group or team (Farista, Bharati and Fitriati, 2018). When they work in
team then they get to know abilities of others and the extent to which they are good or bad from
others. By this way they work hard to improve lacking areas. Team working is very important for

learners those who aims for bright career. Person with great team working skill can become able
to manage entire task effectively and perform their duties well. This is also beneficial in reducing
the work pressure because each one supports every one and give innovative ideas to complete
work with efficiency.
Leadership skill
Leadership is the quality of person that makes them able to lead a team and develop
confidence among group members that decision of leader needs to be followed to get positive
outcome. This is considered as essential skill in workplace as well. Person who likes to get
opportunities and development in their career then individual must have good leadership skill
that makes them unique from others (Din, 2020). Leader is not responsible for own work but
also individual is responsible for work of others as well. Leading capabilities in person make
them able to solve problem soon and get career directions. Teachers encourage learners and
make them ready to be a good leader. Teachers also work as leaders and they prepare future
leaders so that student can get more opportunities in near future. Leadership skill develops
networking opportunities for person that helps them to grow well in career and get promotion
opportunities (Saputra, Komariah and Natsir, 2017). When person lead a team then individual get
to know some innovative ideas which makes them able to know or analyses situations well and
find out best solution to every problem. Student who leads a team interact with other students
and align task in systematic manner. University students aims to get good job once they
complete their education. If student has good leadership skill, then person may get leading
position in big organisation and chances of getting promotions are also high.
Good leadership develops confidence of person and individual become able to ask
questions with teachers freely (Ahmad, 2016). If any kind of confusion takes places, then leader
takes immediate action on behalf of peer group members. This capability of individual provides
more opportunities in near future which gives them benefit to make their bright career. Many
time people learn from their surrounding people. If the person has good leading capability and
take part in college union, then this gets added in their resume which provides them benefit in
career. Many times companies hire candidate that are able to lead a big team and such kind of
experience give them these kinds of opportunities.
Planning skill

This can be defined as ability of an individual to manage activities by using available
resources well. This is the roadmap that aids person in plan for each thing properly and attempt
task systematically so that no complications take place. Great planning skill aid individual in
looking future options and meeting career goal. Planning aids in making lesson plan properly and
taking accurate steps to get outcome as required. Great planning skills are helpful in behaviour
management, if person is able to manage or plan activities properly then it would not create any
kind of pressure on that individual (Russo-Abegao and Glassey, 2018). This planning capabilities
gives correct directions and help student to be focused in their class room lessons. This is the
kind of ability that aids in managing routine work in systematic manner. Many times college
students have to make classroom planning so that they can attend maximum lessons and can
cover the entire course of session. This helps them in getting good marks. Great planning
develops learning opportunities and student can work on technology well and can prepare an
efficient back up plan if something wrong happens (Compton and Pearson, 2016). Proper
planning is helpful in getting sufficient time to make revisions and get more employment
opportunities after completing their education.
CONCLUSION
From the above study it can be concluded that employers are now recruiting candidates after
evaluating their skills properly. Some employers do not hire people those who are not able to
manage work in organisation. After completing their studies, they find for jobs and at that time
they have to show skills. Great communication, planning and team working skills make them
unique from other. It reflects their talent and person can show their potential to business. hence
employability skills are helpful in gaining more career opportunities in near future. Great
planning helps in getting prepared for future issues and great communication helps in improving
knowledge and getting innovative ideas to perform well in organisation.
