The literary instrument of letters is generally used in the novels in order to create a
dramatic effect within the plot. These devices help in the development of the plot, the dramatic
revelation of a character of the novel as well as the exposition of the theme as is present within
the celebrated novel of Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, one of the most celebrated novels that
had been present in the eighteenth century. The following paper attempts an analysis of the given
novel though the various letters that were observed to be exchanged among the several characters
within the novel.
The author of the novel, Jane Austen, is observed to have been inspired by one of the
celebrated writers, Samuel Richardson. The novels that were composed by Samuel Richardson
demonstrated a wide use of the literary device of letters. Jane Austen had retained the use of
letters as an integral part of the novel but was observed to have modified the letters that were
included within the novel. The letters that were used in the development of the plot were blended
in a smooth manner within the novel. Jane Austen uses the letters within the novel to present to
the readers the changes in the plot and the creation of completely new direction for the plot of the
novel (Ford). This in turn assists the development of the plot, the dramatic revelation of a
character of the novel.
The celebrated novel by Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, contains almost six to seven
letters all of which revealed a new turn of events within the play, thereby revealing the various
noteworthy and majorly important sections of the novel (Austen). The first letter of the novel is
presented by Mr. Collins. This letter discusses the use of the letter in the determination of the
plot direction of the novel. Mr. Collins, throughout the novel presents letters that influence the
plot of the novel. The later letters of Mr. Collins deal with the treatment that Mr. Bennett should
impose on Lydia and the gossip over the upcoming engagement of Elizabeth and Darcy reveal
