INTRODUCTIONBusiness organisations consist of different departments in which operations can beconsidered as one of the most important division (Jacobs and Chase, 2017). Operationsmanagement is a process of creating value for company and its customers. Supply chainmanagement and logistics are two of its crucial part. First task of this project is based onWaitrose British retailing organisation i.e. located in Bracknell, Berkshire, England. In secondtask, Canary Wharf, London store of same company will be considered for this file. Waitrose isoperating in Supermarket industry and their parent organisation is John Lewis Partnership.Different roles and functions of managers & leaders in various scenario will become part of thisreport. Comparison between these two identities will be explained under this assignment. Theirare many leadership theories like situational, contingency etc. which will be applied in theproject. The role played by leader and manager in implementation of key approaches will getcover in this file. TASK 1P1 Different roles and characteristics of a leader and managerLeadership means ability of leading group of people. It involve showing right direction toorganisation, motivate employees and making key decisions. In the words of Henry Fayol,forecasting, organising, commanding, coordinating and controlling is considered as management(Slack, Brandon-Jones and Johnston, 2011). Leader is a person with superior position and a highdegree of control. Managers are known for their role in administration work. They areresponsible for controlling staff and executing strategies. Waitrose is surviving in highlycompetitive market because their top and middle level of management understand theirresponsibilities. Leaders and managers may have some similarities in their characteristics androles but they are very different from each other.Difference between leader and manager of WaitroseBasisLeaderManagerKey roleRole of leaders is very important at thetime of setting direction for wholeorganisation. At Waitrose, they makestrategies and clarifies big picture toTheir key role is to allocate resourcesand control their subordinates inorder to achieve set targets. employees. it can be related to shift timings andother duties. OtherresponsibilitiesLeaders are responsible forcommunicating goals and buildingteams. At Waitrose, they make keydecisions like form alliances, choosingappropriate suppliers etc. Work related to making rules,selecting employees and developingprocess in organisation is consideredas responsibility of managers.Waitrose believe in delegatingauthority and their middle level ismaking day to day call. CharacteristicsThe speciality of Leaders is that theyare strategic oriented people. Waitroseis an organisation where key people donot get involved in technical issues.They concentrate on changingenvironment. Managers always stick to the rulesand focus on technical issues. Theymainly concentrate on dailyoperations and try to bringsmoothness in working environment. NatureLeaders are proactive by nature. Theytry to predict future opportunities andthreats in order to develop long termstrategies. Managers at Waitrose are reactive.They do not make decisions untilsomething wrong happen in theorganisation. Similarities betweenleader and manager of WaitroseBasisLeaderManagerRoleLeader of Waitrose supervise workof managers. They are responsiblefor evaluating and improvingperformance of employees who arepresent in middle level management.Managers also do work ofsupervision. They evaluate and guidesubordinates in order to get desiredresults. EffectivecommunicationLeaders make long term plans andthen communicate it to managers.Waitrose cannot perform well inhighly competitive market if leaderfail to explain their strategies toManagers are responsible forcommunicating thoughts of top levelmanagements to employees.
