Studying the paper “Improving patient care through Electronic medical record
system” by Soumia Chraibi I was able to learn few important aspects of Electronic Health
Record system, and how it can be useful to improve patient care. In the fast growing
healthcare sector, a significant issue arises due to errors in manual documentation of patient
information, as well as problem related to the maintenance of an increasing volume of patient
records, and locating the required information or modifying it when needed. Digitization of
the data however can address these challenges, allowing automated recording and
maintenance of patient data and allow efficient management of the patient information. It can
also help to reduce the manual errors in recording, and hence help to eliminate additional
costs incurred by the organization due to erroneous entry of patient data (Bowton et al., 2014;
Agha, 2014). This can further help to improve the quality as well as the costs of care
provided to the patients.
In the light of an ever increasing volume of patient records, an automated digital
record keeping system can be easy to maintain, update and share with relevant healthcare
professionals (Zahabi et al., 2015). Moreover a centralized data system can allow better
analysis of the information and help healthcare researcher to develop a comprehensive
understanding of public health patterns (Williams et al., 2015).
Therefore, Electronic health records can be an important strategy help the
organization improve its data recording and maintain ace process as well as help to improve
patient care through lesser medical errors and reduced costs of care.
