Improving Workplace Communication: Key Skills and Communication Models

This memo discusses the importance of communication in the workplace and how poor communication can affect employee behavior. It also highlights the key skills required by leaders to improve communication and the communication models that can be utilized for better communication.

For the global leaders it is important for them to communicate properly and efficiently in
order to execute their strategy for the betterment of the organization. By using the
secondary research it has been noted that poor communication in an organization or the
workplaces have detrimental effect on the performance of an organization. The key skills also
have been identified using the secondary research in order to improve the communication in
anorganization. This memo discusses about the key skills that are required by the leaders in an
workplace or organization and the memo also discusses the various communication models that
ensures improved communication , which are essential for the betterment of performance in the
workplace .
The key skills required by the leaders in order to improve the communication in workplace
The management leaders require possessing key skills for efficient communication in the
workplace. In the article, Argenti (2017) , the author details the way in which the high level
executives make use of the corporate communication for the execution of strategy (Argenti
2017) .This article states that the leaders are using communication for the execution of strategy
in the following ways :
 By “having a clearly articulated strategy that gets repeated broadly and consistently
“- It is important for all the levels of a company or organization to understand the

strategy of the organization .Thus , the strategy needs to be clear and consistent to
promote understanding .
 Strategy needs to be clear and consistent - It is important to create a culture for
execution of strategy. It was also identified that the internal communication plays a major
role in shaping and developing culture.
 Presence of leaders - It is importantthat the leaders of an organization is present and
personally deliver the messages to the employees for executing strategy through
communication.It has been proved that leaders are most effective when they are
responsible for both the employees and production of the organization (Ayub, Manaf and
Hamzah 2014).
Conceptual frameworks to enhance communication of the leaders
It is important to develop conceptual frameworks in order to communicate efficiently with the
stakeholders of the company. In the article, Mayfield, Mayfield and Sharbrough III (2015), the
authors discusses about development of conceptual framework for scrutinizing and enhancing
communications of the leaders to internalandexternal stakeholders by making use of motivating
language theory or MLT (Mayfield, Mayfield and Sharbrough 2015). The key points that have
been identified from the research are as follows:
 The article provides a model, with the help of which the top leaders of organization
convey messages to the stakeholders.
 The article also presents another model that discuses how the strategicMotivating
Languageor ML can be dispersed within an organization.

The first model, Strategic Vision Interpretation model “holds value through the identification of
various target audiences for strategic vision input and transmission.”The second model describes
the operation of a cybernetic process, when the top leaders integrate environmental cues from the
stakeholders of the organization. According to Argenti (2017) communication plays a key role in
development of successful environment in workplace .From the article it can be stated “ML has
powerful unleashed potential at the organizational level of analysis, especially with top leader
communication of strategic vision and related values.”
Utilization of communication models for improving communication in workplace
The use of certain communication models can improve the communication in workplace, which
has a positive impact on the performance of an organization or workplace. In the article , Ayub,
Manaf and Hamzah (2014), the authors discusses about the importance of the leadership
communication skills, which has become a necessity in order to execute strategy and reach new
heights in the 21st century. According to Argenti (2017) the organizations struggles due to poor
communication in workplace. The leaders in an organization must communicate in order to carry
out business transactions efficiently. The key points that have been identified from the article are
as follows :
 The article emphasizes the importance of the use of communication models by leaders for
communication and the most popular communication model is Blake and Mouton
Managerial Grid Model (Ayub, Manaf and Hamzah 2014). This model was developed in
1964, it assumes “that leaders are most effective when they exhibit both concern for
people and concern for production.

From this memo, it can be concluded that the communication plays a key role in anyworkplace.
From the secondaryresearch it can be summarized that the communication in a workplace affects
the behaviour of the employees in any workplace. it is important to identify and the follows the
key skills in order to improve the communication in the workplace .Utilization of proper
communication channels and framework would be very useful to improve then communication
of all the staff in the workplace so atht they can communicate more efficiently in future .
