INTRODUCTION
Incorporating recovery principles in recovery of any diseases plays an important role, as
these principles act as a medicine for the patient's health. These principles assist in open and
honest discussion over the illness of individual. The framework of mental health care centres is
completely based on implementation of recovery principles like, strength, love, hope, and
community participation, focus of community, culture and care. Further, all these principles are
implemented to promote self determination of the individual suffering from mental illness like
Jeremy Oxley. The report will evaluate the importance and role of recovery principles and in the
case of Jeremy suffering from Schizophrenia. He was a lead singer of 80's band in Sunny boy’s
documentary but due to unusual behaviour of his younger brother he got stressed with work load
and finally got diagnosed with Schizophrenia. After which he became socially isolated Alcoholic
because according to him the intoxication stabilise the thoughts of mind. Beside, the success of
band was completely depended on performance of frontman Jeremy and due to sickness of lead
band member the success lasted for only two years because of Jeremy illness.
Furthermore, Jeremy needed proper love and hope because he tried to avoid medication
because according to him mental illness cannot be cured and individual has to die. The report
will analyse the importance of recovery principles like love, hope and community participation
in the recovery of Jeremy Oxley. According to Jeremy, the diseases and its cure is bullshit which
was dragging him towards intoxication, however in documentary, the nurse Mary convinced him
to take proper medication. . Hence, the report will outline the impact of treating patients with
love just like in the documentary where Jeremy used to think that he is not Schizophrenic
because that will make him a bad person but Mary convinced him that he is suffering from
Schizophrenic that does not mean that he is bad person at all. Henceforth, the report will identify
the importance of clinical recovery and personal recovery for the patients suffering from mental
illness according to the lived experience of Jeremy Oxley.
MAIN BODY
There are various types of patients suffering from mental illness and have different type
of attitude towards the diseases therefore sometimes it turns difficult for clinicians to manage
with the patients' attitude. For instance, patients who behave impatiently and aggressively with
the one who tries to calm them down in the situation of anger. Individuals like, Jeremy in Sunny
boy documentary used take overdose to drugs and alcohol to stabilise their mind and thoughts of

his brother Peter (Michael 2013). Moreover, in the case of sunny boy documentary, Jeremy used
to think that there is not cure for the Schizophrenia and therefore he tried to avoid taking
medication (Michael 2013). There are many individuals who are unable to speak their mind out
and therefore they get frustrated and make illusion according to their imagination which isolates
them from society and make them think that people around them are making fun of their
thoughts and do not understand their situation which force them to behave reluctantly (Cavelti &
et.al., 2017). People suffering from Schizophrenia do not like making friends and remains
isolated from community which leads to practices like, suicide, self harm etc. (Naslund & et.al.,
2016).Thus, Difficulty in expressing thoughts and mixed thoughts of individuals leads to the
situation where the patients behave childish and do not take proper medication which in turn
make them more sick and slow.
Principles of recovery plays an important role in improving individuals health, by helping
patients in gaining hopes and understanding of the disease from which the person is suffering.
Incorporating recovery principles assist the care centres in supporting and empowering patients
to develop a sense of making their own choices over proper medication and meditation which
can help the people to overcome their health problems (Buckley-Walker & et.al., 2017). To deal
with the patients suffering from Schizophrenia, it is important for nurses of mental health care
centres to understand the uniqueness of individual, choices, attitudes, respect.
For instance, talking about Jeremy Oxley in documentary of Sunny Boy who lost all
hopes of recovering and moreover according to him the diseases cannot be cured therefore he
dragged himself to intoxication which affected his health more. Further when he was taken to
health care centre the Nurse Mary tried to understand the situation of his personal life and
decided to motivate him by awakening hopes of living in Jeremy and for that she tried to make
him understand the opportunities for choices, meaning, purpose of life and his value in the
society (Cleary & et.al., 2017). Moreover, Mary asked him to look over the broader aspect of life
which is developing social inclusions and quality of life leaving behind all the drugs (A national
framework of recovery-oriented mental health services 2013). The incorporation of this principle
motivated Jeremy to look for more happening years in his life.
Further, after the separation with younger brother, Jeremy got isolated from society
because the paranoid and disturbing thoughts related to peter captured his mind therefore Mary
incorporated friendly and loving recovery principle in the case of Sunny boy documentary in

which she focused on caring and acknowledging the sense of life and love in the life of Jeremy.
Moreover, she communicated and shared appropriate information to him regarding his diseases
which motivated his morale of taking proper medication and also led to develop a loving relation
with Mary.
Henceforth, in the documentary of Sunny boy, Jeremy got isolated from society and
dragged himself to excessive intake of drugs and alcohol because of separation from his brother
peter. When his brother left him stressed he used to imagine paranoid and disturbing situation in
his mind which led to drastic consequences and he got admitted the recovering principle of
community participation assisted him to over come the sickness because the Nurse Mary made
him understand the importance of interaction and participation (Wilson, Hutchinson & Hurley
2017). Thus, Mary supported the activities and thoughts of Jeremy in order to change his
psychology which was stressing him out, as according to him mental illness cannot be cured and
he is bad person just because he is suffering from Schizophrenia (Slade & et.al., 2014)
Personal recovering in case of mental illness
Personal recovery for the patients suffering from Schizophrenia act as medicine for the
individuals because recovering from every diseases needs a motivation and for that the person
should understand the sense of life and enhances their participation in social activities. The best
effort an individual can contribute in personal recovery is developing friendly relation with
patient and understanding their feelings (Drake & Whitley 2014). Therefore, in the case of
Jeremy, Mary tried to understand its circumstances which used to disturb Jeremy and she made
him understand the sense of living. Beside, the meditation activities are also beneficial for the
patient suffering from Schizophrenia as it helps in distracting the individual from negative
thoughts. The key drivers of personal recovery in the documentary of Sunny boy were strength,
love, hope, understanding, transformation, and communication (Barber & et.al., 2017). Thus,
according to documentary it can be stated that things and situation which affects the human mind
are generally related to its personal and family relation and the best way to cure mental illness is
developing caring and honest personal relation because in end when Jeremy and Mary got
married, he recovered well.
Overview over and personal and clinical recovering in case of mental illness
There is a big difference in personal and clinical care of patients because the clinical care
is completely based on appropriate medication as prescribed according to diseases the person is

suffering from whereas the personal recovery depends on care, love and developing the sense of
living in the life of person who loses its ability to think, act, work and draw conclusions for any
kind of situation. Clinical attention is important because it demonstrates appropriate facility,
continuous monitoring, specialist to look after and follow up to every change whereas personal
recovering is based on friendly environment, non judgemental people, simple languages and
understanding conditional. Hence, in the documentary of sunny Boy, Jeremy was disturbed
because of work pressure created by his younger brother and due to which he uses to intake
excessive amount of Alcohol and got diagnosed with Schizophrenia where he isolated him from
society because according to him the diseases cannot be cured but when he got serious and got
admitted he met his nurse Mart who treated him like home. Mary do not treated him as a patient
instead she tried to be friends with him and focused on understanding the reason behind his
illness. Hence, after analysing the situation Mary tried to create homely environment for Jeremy
because according to her mixing the recovery principles of personal and clinical care can assist
him to overcome the and understand the importance of taking proper medication (Naslund &
et.al., 2016). Henceforth, when Jeremy was recovering well, they both got married and Mary
always tried to maintain friendly and healthy environment between the in orders making him
stress free.

principles which can help the patients in recovering. Further, it analysed the usage of clinical
principles in the documentary of Sunny boy in which Jeremy got diagnosed with Schizophrenia
as he used to take stress because of his younger brother Peter. Moreover, the report outlined that
personal care plays and important role in recovering patient from illness because in the
