Student performance on the California critical thinking skills
There are various skills acquired by an individual that are helping him or her for being
a good employee, leader or an entrepreneur. One such skill includes critical thinking skills
which are considered as important part of entrepreneurship, leader and a manager in an
organisation (Ahlin, 2014). Considering critical thinking as a base for the study of this
research, and article will be reviewed from this essay (Cottrell, 2015). The article is “Student
performance on the California critical thinking skills” test by Terry (Terry & Ervin, 2012).
The paper reflects examination of California critical thinking skill test and performance of the
students. The exam is used to test the critical thinking skills of students and evaluate the
scope for job related performance of individual. This test conducted through the research is
not a general knowledge measurement, this is more specific to the knowledge interpreted and
that can be applied. The paper purpose is to identify the elements of student performance
considering this exam. Therefore this essay will include critical analysis and evaluation of the
article for better understanding of critical thinking skills (Alves & Toledo, 2018).
The theoretical background considered through the research includes various authors’
definitions and understanding of critical thinking and designing of CCTST exam. For
instance the background reflect that critical thinking is considered to be a cognitive engine
that act as the decision maker or problem-solving tools. The test designed for analysis of
critical thinking skills would be assessing various level and prediction for future job
performance of an individual (Akkermans, Brebbibkmeijer, & Blonk, 2015). From the review
it can be said that the background has been created strongly by the article which reflect an
advantage for the research as it is important to understand the literature and theoretical
approach of the findings (Laud & Arevalo, 2016).

Understanding the purpose of the report it can be said that the research question
Include identifying the level of critical thinking skills of every individual and identifying a
data mining the future scope of job performance. However it can be said that the research
question posted, not clearly presented by the article or the researcher which can be one of the
weakness and lack of clarity in research question from this research paper (Bennis &
Thomas, 2002). The relevance of the research question that will be addressed through this
article are to understand if the students are ready for the future job performance or not and if
the course within the organisation is helping students in developing critical thinking skills.
This will also reflect the scope for individual to improve critical thinking in order to enhance
their future job performance and opportunities in corporate organisations (Raymond, 2018).
Considering the research methodology adopted through this research article include
use of qualitative as well as quantitative research method. This is one of the advantages or
strengths of the research that both types of methods have been used to analyse the critical
thinking, as the quantitative results reflect through this test that is CCTST exam and therefore
it is it to printed using qualitative method reflecting categories of human capital that is GPA,
exam score, and discipline major, admission. Other than this technology and utilisation rate
have also been considered which reflects the study time, classroom demonstrations and
lectures. There are total 8000 students in the university, there are 96 students are considered
to be a sample from this mid-sized religious institution. Therefore, it can be said that the
research methodology or data collection method its primary method as the data is collected
Using CCTST exam which reflect empirical research study. However it can be said that there
could be various challenges or problems while understanding this empirical research
approach for instance errors in measurement with demographic data (Reale & Riche, 2018).
The data analysis method or approach from this research reports are the key strengths
of the article. Considering the empirical research taxonomy which is the model used to assess

the performance of the student considering CCTST exam has various advantages to use like
testable and parsimonious. The model has been developed by the University to analyse
student learning which is dependent on the student production view and learning. Assuming
the production function the critical thinking concept would be tested from this exam and can
be representative as a production function. These are the major strength of the research
articles as this reflects appropriate calculation of the scores of each individual and student or
sample collected. Considering variant determinants, those are dependent variables applicable
for measuring critical thinking skills of each sample and resulted into percentile score.
Therefore the descriptive statistics reflect all the studied variables through this model (Alves
& Toledo, 2018).
The findings what is the result of the report Reflect least square estimation of
equation. The findings are from four different courses that students have been taking in
spring 2010 for the CCTST exam. This trend from the findings is considering the ethical
consideration of sample collection and elimination of the samples which are not appropriate
or incomplete so as to make the results more accurate. Therefore among 111 samples
collected only 96 were considered to be studied. Moreover for the findings the independent
variables were considered not more than 0.50 as correlation which reflects evidence that the
specification of models do not include excessive multicollinearity. This can be another
strength to the article as reflect the result to be more significant statistically and accurate. The
results reflected that statistical significant variables who are GPA and ability. The findings
reflected that the students course of this exam were directly related to the ability in academy
as measured by the college and measured academy performance of every student considering
college grade point average. The relevance of the variable ability reflects supporting student
Towards performing ability academically this was found to be relatively high level.
Therefore it can be said that the findings were relatively significant when it comes to

identifying the ability of the students in academic performance. Moreover the positive impact
of GPA was also identified for seat CCTST exam. Considering constant ability, demographic
conditions, greats the scholars have initiated and completed six courses and approximately
5% were scored as lower percentage on this exam however the results from this exam was
found to be not statistically significant. The insignificant statistical results could be one of the
weaknesses from the study and from the findings analysed which reflect the need for better
learning environment to be provided to the students which could be statistical equal to other
traditional involvement of campus. However, it can be said that through findings it has been
analysed that even after growth in supply and demand of online sessions in higher education,
the students deliver slightly better in campus mode, which needs to be continue for student
performance result as compare to the online mode.
The future scope for the study reflected through the empirical results that reflect
students to score lower on CCTST exam however it has been identified that the business
students were able to relatively score better than transfer students. This reflects that the
business studies will be helpful to the students to work towards the improvement of critical
thinking skills which could be used as a base for the future research in order to consider
multiple courses which may have positive result for the students considering this exam
performance. Moreover multiple institutions must be sampled and robust for the future
research scope which will reflect the consistency towards the empirical results found (Terry
& Ervin, 2012).
From critically evaluating the article as per my opinion, I would like to reflect
agreement towards the article explanation, the reason being the article has been considered
various effective uses of empirical study and data in modelling. For example the article
included various variables to be considered while studying the result for CCTST exam, which
reflect that various factors have been considered by the test so as to provide more accurate
Document Page
results. Therefore it can be said that the result is affective however there are some challenges
faced during the research and limitations were found in the study pertaining to use of sample
from only one institution. Other than this the ethical consideration of the article is also one of
the points that I agree to the stated findings from the research. Moreover it has been identified
that the business students were able to enhance their business critical thinking skills which
were not a relatively lower entrance for students, I will also agree to this aspect as the
business studies are helping the students to enhance their knowledge relating to the
management, critical thinking and innovation which will help in their future entrepreneurship
career (Coulson-Thomas, 2017).
Overall, it can be concluded that they were quite strength and weakness of the article which
have been identified previously. However to conclude it can be said that some of the
strengths of the article include use of primary research, use of qualitative and quantitative
method of research, considering various variables together in order to analyse the
examination result. Moreover the model included to test the data and find the result was
affective enough showing the empirical results. However there were some of the weaknesses
identified through the report which reflects that the research question was not effectively
presented in the article which may create confusion and appropriate direction towards the
research (Fancsali & Savitz-Romer, 2015). Other than this, size of the sample was another
weakness that may reduce the accuracy and reliability of the results. That is use of small
sample size that is 96 students whereas the institute include more than 8000 students overall.
Therefore it can be concluded that the contribution from the article reflect a base for future
study towards other institutions considering the empirical results from this exam. This may
impact in analysing the future scope for the students towards the entrepreneurship skills, as
critical thinking skills are part of skills reflected in a leader or the entrepreneur (Baron &

Mueller, 2016). Therefore the job performance capability of the individual could be analysed
for the scholars considering this article contributed.
