The Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders are called the First people of Australia. The
association between self-reported experience of racism and discrimination and poor physical and
mental health is well established. It has been found from a health survey that the aboriginals have
a higher level of psychological distress that were 1.3 times higher than that of the non-
aboriginals. Today the aboriginal continue to face institutional racism as well as interpersonal
racism sustaining their low economic status. Indigenous men and women have life expectancy
10.7 to 9.6 years lower than that of the non-indigenous men. Racism and discrimination makes
this community believe less on non-Indigenous method of treatment.
Response: Study about the aboriginals and the Torres Strait Islanders allows the students to
develop respect for the diversity and accept the cultural differences existing between the
aboriginal and the non-aboriginal counterparts. It is necessary to have a knowledge about the
racism and discrimination still faced by the aboriginals in the field employment, education and
the health care facilities. Learning provides the knowledge of the world’s one of the oldest living
culture in the ground of Australia (Markwick et al., 2019). As claimed by the government
reports, a large number of reforms had been taken for the Australian government in order
eradicate the racism and discrimination, but none of the policies of the procedures could really
close the gap. Various surveys have stated that aboriginal people are twice as likely as to not get
appropriate health care facilities in comparison to the non-aboriginal counterparts (Markwick et
al., 2014). The Australian government had set up anti-racism campaign and closing the gap
policy to eradicate racism. This is an absolute breaching of the fundamental human rights, as it
has been clearly mentioned in the constitution, that all individuals have equal rights to live, seek
