Introduction
How does the UN define indigenous people?
The practitioners and inheritors of the people who are related to unique cultures are
the indigenous people. The cultural, social, political and economic characteristics are retained
by them. This retention makes them different from those who belong to the dominant sector
of society in which everyone resides (Mistry and Berardi, 2016.)
What rights do the indigenous people have?
Draft of the declaration outlines that there are specific human rights for the
indigenous people. They cover items that include the rights of government, rights of cultural
heritage, recognition of community and laws for the indigenous people. For example, the4y
have been given proper recognition and rights to reside at any part of the country. They are
also given full rights on land that belong to their own (Rubin, 2016.)
Since the United Nations Organization has declared rights for the indigenous people,
after then years of espousal, advancement has been done in terms of recognition that is formal
in several ways for the indigenous people and their progress. Unfortunately, in several
countries overwhelmingly the indigenous people continue to come across marginalization,
discrimination and major provocations in enjoying and utilizing some rights that are basic
(Madden et al. 2016.) While the indigenous people already have made notable advancements
towards advocating their international and regional rights, more than forty systems of the
United Nations and other organizations those are worldwide came together and said a joint
statement, “implementation of the Declaration is impeded by persisting vulnerability and
exclusion, particularly wrong indigenous women, children, youth and persons with
disabilities.” (Un, 2019)
