1. Briefly describe three main ideas the author wants you to know (“What is the author trying to convince me to believe?)
a. The ways, in which adults take difficult way to earn respect in the society.in this context, the author illustrates a society within a
specific society where individuals try out different methods to gain trust.
b. For gaining respect and to survive within the brutal society they often take hold of criminal ways to sustain their education and other
needs. The author here is trying to convince that small acts of criminal attempts and role of resistance within the society are mostly a
part of survival strategy used by the poor young adults who has been consistently neglected by the society and capital culture that are
needed for them to lead a successful life (Durkheim, 2018, p.65).
c. Highlights about the system in which different institutions considers young adults behavior and mistakes as criminal activities. Mostly
the racial stereotypical beliefs that people have which retrains them to behave normal within the society. It is the society who has
resisted the preconceived notions about the racial issues for which they tends to demean them in all cases (Miller and Rose, 2017,
p.191).

My reaction to the passage is…
Metacognition It represents specifically a society within a society. It is quite difficult to understand the terms like metacognition that assets a
misconception of that is thought to be an ideal behavior and the preconceived notions about the ideas of proper behavior. Here the
author’s idea is in support of the marginalized community who thrives to survive against the general attitude of the society towards
the underprivileged.

Self and others The idea of self and other depicts an idea of George Hegel’s assertion of manager and slave. In this context, it can state that the master
identifies his slave as much the later recognizes him. It is the stereotypes that refrains an Asian American individual and his kids in
the store as it created stereotypes (Costa, 2018, p.87).
Stealing of chips In this context, Mike was not actually planning to steal the chips. It is mainly because the clerk misbehaved him like a
criminal, so he behaved in such way.
Youth control complex The author here depicts an ethnographic research that highlights the area where black ethnographic transform themselves
in to crime attempts as an effort to resist against the society which is very much racist.
Acts of survival
This term gives the idea of Richard Quincey’s idea of survival within the system of economy. This quotes signifies that people or
individual engages themselves in the act of crime to accomplish other collective means. It is some poor people who involve
themselves in the act of crime resistance such as workplace sabotage to survive.
3. Discuss how this article connects to something you have experienced in your own life (What does this article have to do with me?)
The article gives an idea about the relationship between self-identify in accordance to the social identity. During the course of being in school
there are several instanced where I have seen people who are from minority are often treated badly as they are from lower economic class.
Owing to this forceful negligence, these children have transformed theses in to criminal form stealing others foods and money. These children
seemed to lack confidence due to the presence of social stereotypes (Costa, 2018, p.87). Techers and faculty members never treated them as
others they have always been treated as minority. This is the reason for which they make their living through criminal means. It is the social
construct that forced them to follow such path.

4. How does this article relate to what you read in the Practical Skeptic Textbook this week? (Include at least one Soc. Concept)
Focusing on Durkheim’s theory of humanism the focus has been drawn towards the theory of individual conscience that can reconcile with
the freedom collective resistance. In this aspect, the article explores the understanding between individual and the society in broader details
within the course of thinking (LeRoux and Bernadska, 2014, p.164). In its default position the author portrayed an anti-social nature if human
beings who are often let loose due to destructive forms of individual perception and resistance. Social beliefs and normal notions are those
that idealise the liberal human nature as an ethical solution for all. The article therefore has highlighted the collective conscience present in all
individual about the norms existing in the society.
