INTRODUCTION
Corporate social responsibility includes management of business by leaving a positive
impact on the society. The business implement CSR strategies to integrate the environmental
and social issues while performing its operations and interacting with external stakeholders (Van
Hees, Moyson and Roeyers, 2015). For the better understanding of the report Tesco has been
selected which is a multi nation grocery store whose headquarter is in England, UK. It basically a
retail store that offer food item, books, cloth and all daily necessity items. This report makes the
discussion about the literature review, its purpose and role. As well as report carries the
viewpoint of various authors on adoption of CSR activity at workplace.
TASK 1
Literature review: Literature review emphasise the discussion made on the published
information of specific topic. Here, viewpoint of various authors are given for in-depth analysis
as well as for better understanding of the topic. It basically includes an overview about the
subject or issue that varies from author to author.
Purpose of Literature review:
 The primary purpose of literature review is to provide easy access to the reader of
research due to which it is considered as relevant, important, valid and meaningful
summarisation of the complete report.
 It gives the place to researcher to began their research by collecting data, summarising it
and making the comparison among original research which has been already conducted in
that specific field.
 Literature review also make sure duplicate or repeatation in work does not arises among
the various researchers (Moore and Morton, 2017).
 It provide an overall summary about the topic by focusing on key findings and giving
recommendation.
 Helps the business or academic work to identify the reasons of gap or inconsistency
arises pertain within the organisation.
 Lastly, it offer constructive analysis to the reader who go through the specific research
report.

Contribution of literature review on academic work: Literature review has
significantly made an enormous effort by making the valuable contribution on the academic
work. Initially researcher identify the data either through primary source of data collection or
secondary source of data collection (Zheng, Niiya and Warschauer, 2015). Within primary
source of data collection which is first hand investigation on which research investigate
everything by themselves. On other side, under secondary source researcher depend upon
published information that is gained from internet, magazine, article, books and so on. After
identifying the matter for research, report is prepared which carries the literature review on
which the topic is explained based on the past researcher work done by various author. Here,
comparison is also made by highlighting the weakness of other author and explaining the reason
why current research report is original and better than previous work. Thus, it is a kind of
published information which helps the business, profession or any academia work to gain better
understanding about the specific topic. In addition to it, literature review also makes the
contribution by identifying as well as filling the gap faced by business. For instance, according to
Kolka and van Tulder in 2010, If an organisation faces any scandal due to which its faces its
image gets hampered and faces huge crises while rebuilding its image. Then, their contribution
CSR activity helps them to re establish their bond with their shareholder and gets a chance to
enhance the image of company within the society. On contrary, as per Marcel van Marrewijk
2011, implementation of CSR activity helps the company to achieve long term sustainable
development. Thus, both the authors have their opinion therefore, they draw up various data to
validate their research which ultimately helps the reader to understand the report thoroughly and
get deep understanding about the topic. Along with that they make make better comparison about
the author and relevance of their report conducted on specific topic.
Various role of literature review are stated below:
 The role of literature review is to give overview on the existing research topic by
identifying the gap and demonstrating the situation for the convenience of reader.
 It is used to provide new interpretation to the reader that is derived from the old
interpretation. Along with that the relevance of new interpretation which is more valid
and reliable is explained to the reader.
 One of the essential roles of literature review is to identify any issue or gap, this helps the
business to address the situation more wisely. Along with that it gives an opportunity to

researcher by explaining that how their research is more valid, original and better from
other researches.
 Additionally, it helps to resolve or avoid the conflict situation by exploring new,
innovative as well as better ways to perform the work by eliminating duplicate work.
 It provide relevant data to the reader in a summarised form that explains the relevance of
research. Moreover, it carries the brief research of various researcher and helps in making
better comparison among them (Kucel, et.al., 2016).
 Even if the researcher is proposing new method or theory it allow them to build a
theoretical framework

Literature review on adoption of CSR at workplace
According to Obeua Persons, 2011, Organisation must be able to manage the diversity by
bringing the equality within the working place. Equality within the workplace is a king of CSR
activity which an organisation must adopt for its employees (Persons, 2011). Like, the company
must make laws to pay the equal amount of remuneration to their personnel avoid the
discrimination based on the favouritism or biasness. Additionally, even the laws for disable
employee must fall under equal laws. This brings uniformity as each employee get the equal
chance to access the opportunity which promote them to achieve their as well as objective of
organisation. Therefore, equality within the workplace is significant as the employee of
organisation come from different culture, background, have different view or prospective
towards specific thing and so on. By making equal laws within the workplace helps to tie up all
the employees together without any dispute or conflict regarding discrimination. Thus, this bring
collaboration and positive synergy within the team. In context to Tesco, which perform its
operations globally and make the valuable effort to focus on the various initiative such as
Skills4Life, Youth4Ever and Care4Nature which is for empowering the skill of its employees,
heath as well as fitness and protecting environment respectively. Indulging in such programs
leads to positivity within various stakeholder of Tesco and help them to make their goal
attainable.
According to Clement Fournier in 2017, CSR plan of organisation must primarily
consider the employee's need which furthermore leads to employee engagement, retention as
well as commitment towards the goal of organisation. Therefore, maintaining equality among the

workforce and adopting vital CSR activity helps the organisation in various ways. Some of them
are stated below (Fournier, 2017):
Improves the performance of organisation: Organisation that promote gender equality
where the role, position or status are assigned based on the knowledge and experience. Promote
the equality and motivation within the workforce which leads to commitment of personnel
towards the organisational goal. From the survey it has been identified that under certain
circumstances women are the better manager as they tend to motivate their colleague to achieve
their target and supervising them to check their performance. Herein Tesco, provide equal
opportunity to all personnel like the senior independent director of Tesco is Deanna
Oppenheimer, Melissa Bethell is one of the non executive director and so on.
Attract as well as retain the talent of the company: If an organisation engages in
several CSR activities for the welfare of society, environment and encourages its internal staff to
work for the organisation for the longer duration. Thus, implementation of CSR strategy
enhances the reputation of company within the society due to which the turnover rate of an
employees lowers down.
Enhances the reputation of the company: BY adopting suitable CSR activity and
engaging in fair policies can enhance the reputation of company due to which it can gain the trust
of its stakeholders. In context to Tesco, with change in time has changed its various policies in
favour of gender discrimination, implemented CSR activity such as abolish the use of plastic
bags, recycling the waste, reduction in omission of carbon and so on. To gain the trust of
stakeholders in order to attain success.
According to Sammi Caramela in (2018), Investing in CSR activity is a win win situation
for the company. As the company work for the betterment of its internal as well as external
environment which further appeals the attention of consumer and employees of the organisation.
Thus, there are several ways to practice CSR, some of them are defined below (Caramela, 2018):
Environment effort: The primary focus of company is to expand or perform all its
operations without hampering the environment. Herein Tesco, in order to support the
environment makes the optimum utilisation ODF the resources such as energy, fuel and water.
Like, they keep on minimising the usage of energy with the passage of time.
Fair labour practice: Corporation should treat all its employee equally by assigning
them equal remuneration based on their work. Otherwise, their internal staff perform its role just

for the sake of doing without being commitment towards the organisation. Respective company
have made laws regarding health and safety of their staff like favourable working hours.
Philanthropy: Business must provide donations to the charitable organisation who are
not privileged part of our society. Tesco has donate each year to British Red Cross which provide
food, clean water to the needy people.
Volunteering: Organisation can also organise some events to address the specific issue
or concern towards environment or society. Herein, respected company makes contribution to
various health programme like they have formed partnership with football association. Due to
which they sponsor various games and event for the fitness of the people.
According to Marcos Komodromos and Yioula Melanthiou 2014, If an organisation
wants to establish long term relationship with its stakeholders then they should invest in CSR
activities. As the stakeholders are concern for social or environmental issues so the company
should manage its image by implementing CSR strategy and inform the public about its
contribution (Komodromos and Melanthiou, 2014). Thus, business can not operate alone it
basically gets positively or negatively affected by the stakeholders. Therefore, this provide the
opportunity to company in order to formulate desirable relationship with the stakeholders of
company such as customers, employees, supplier, government, financial institution and investor.
In relation to above mentioned company has made programme for environment protection such
as Care4Nature. This plan include plantation of tree, abolition of plastic bags and minimising the
emission of carbon. Along with the protection of environment they have raised fund for various
charitable organisation that help the people of unprivileged society.
According to Hannes Koppel and Tobias Regner in 2013, Investing in CSR activity helps
to fight against poverty so it a favourable action taken by companies to contribute their profit for
the welfare of society (Koppel and Regner ,2013). Moreover, it is a contribution made to
enhance the image of company and gain sustainable development. Along with that maintaining
equality within the firm makes the diverse team of people that help the organisation to bring
innovation. As different prospective of the people generate diverse idea to sole the complex
problem easily without hampering the growth of organisation. Like, Tesco does not allow the
supplier to test the product on the animals, along with that they regularly communicate with the
staff take their feedback and make changes accordingly to retain its existing employees.

According to Michael Hopkins in (2012), the owner of company should follow those
obligation which are desirable for the organisation to its its objective successfully as well as for
the society. Thus, company must promote the belief of society by making the stable contribution
for them. Moreover, the managers of the business must keep on adopting the CSR strategy with
the passage of time to build the reputation in the society. Furthermore, the mangers of corporate
are appointed as a public trustee as they maintain the relationship with its stakeholder by making
the optimum utilisation of resources and implement valuable CSR strategy. Along with that they
accept the philanthropy which means company makes the essential contribution by funding to
the charitable organisation (Hopkins, 2012). In context to Tesco, has provided equal growth
opportunity to its all internal staff irrespective of their gender, age, caste and so on. They also
have formed partnership with various charitable organisation who basically work to provide
food, cloths and water to those people who are deprived of basic necessity. Along with that they
have not only eliminated the use of plastic bags but also recycled them to safeguard the interest
of environment.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it has been determined that corporate social responsibility is an
essential part of the organisation which enhances the image of company within the society. It
basically state that an organisation should perform all its operations by evaluating its
consequences on environment, staff as well as on society. Like, if a retail business gives plastic
bags to their customer which is not good for environment as it is non biodegradable resource. In
such case organisation should replace the use of plastic bags with paper bags. Moreover, CSR
should be implemented within workplace in form of plan and policy such as making uniform
laws for internal staff and provide charity to the needy people of society. Therefore, this helps
the organisation to achieve long term success.
