TASK 1
An industrial robot can be referred to as an arm o f a robot that can be used in an industrial or
factory environment for the purpose of manufacturing applications. There are five main types of
robots commonly used in industries today with each type providing different joint configuration
as well as different purpose/use and application. Each type of robot has got its own type of
movement as discussed below1.
SCARA
This type of robot name stands for Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm. They are
capable of doing three translations as well as a rotation around a vertical axis. When all the
rotary shafts become vertically positioned, the end effector that is attached to the arm is able to
move horizontally. It operates by moving the arm at a high speed until it gets to a point that is on
a flat surface and then lowering and raising the effector. This makes the robots useful for level
surfaces operations.
Uses
Commonly used in assembly operations to pick and place objects machine tool handling and
sealant application.

Robot 3
CARTESIAN
It carries out movements on 3 dimensions through sliding on its 3 perpendicular axes. They have
3 linear joints that use the x, y, z system to deliver a linear motion through the axis. Also have an
attached wrist in order to necessitate rotational movement.it generally requires a larger area for
installation. This is due to the necessary area of operation. It provides a higher level of accuracy.
It is also easy to operate.
Uses
Transportation of heavy objects, in electronics e.g. the ICs that are mounted on the PCBs

Robot 4
ARTICULATED
It features rotary joints. It can range from simple 2 joints structures up to 10 or more structures.
Its arm has connection to the base through a twisting joint and the links in the arm are connected
by rotary joints. Each joint offers an additional range of motion and degree of freedom and is
called an axis. Most have 4 or 6 axes.
Uses
Palletizing in bakery or food manufacturing.
CYLINDRICAL
It has got not less than one rotary joint that is located at its base together with 1 prismatic joint
meant to connect the links. The rotary joint makes use of a rotational motion along the joint axis
whereas the prismatic joint operates in linear motion. Their operations are within a cylindrical-
shaped work envelope.
