Introduction
The project that I had undertaken is an important one and has been a learning experience
for me. While doing this project, I have learned about the various issues that are faced by the
Nigerian students wanting to study at New Zealand. The issues faced by the Nigerian students
include issues with visa, language differences, money, and lack of acquaintance with the culture
of New Zealand. This assignment highlights the critical incidents and self-reflection of the role
that I played while completing the report successfully. The key incidents that have a major
significance on the completion of the project have been highlighted, along with the action plan
for personal development that I need to ensure, in order to enhance my skills for the future
projects.
Self-evaluation of the impact behaviour
The three most critical incidents that are significant include the ability to build positive
relations with the staffs, effective time management and communication.
1. Ability to build positive relation with the staff
Building relations with people at the personal and professional level has a major
significance. Building of positive relations has a key role to play. While taking part in the
project, I have been successful in building relation with the various people that I have connected
with, while completing this project. While working on the project, I had to communicate with
various Nigerian students, in order to understand the issues that are being faced by the students
of Nigeria, while studying at New Zealand. I had to communicate with the various agents, who
had been working closely with the students of Nigeria. Building positive relations with the

Nigerian students studying at New Zealand was important, in order to identify the issues that are
faced by them. While communicating with the students, initially I faced obstruction from the
students. This is because; I had not been able to build a positive relation with them. However,
with time, I was successful in building a positive relation with the students as well as with the
agents whom I interviewed. Moreover, while doing this research project, I had to work in
collaboration with my friends and classmate. While taking assistance from them, I was able to
build a strong and positive relation with my friends. The ability of building a positive relation is
essential and will help me in my professional development as well. With the building of
successful relationship with the key staffs and others who are involved in the project, I am able
to ensure that my project is completed successfully.
2. Effective time management
Time management has a key role to play in ensuring the success of a project. Time
management refers to the effective management of the various activities that are involved in
completion of the project, along with setting the right priority for each task. Time management is
essential in order to complete the research project successfully, within the stipulated time. While
working on this project, I realised the importance of effective time management. Lack of time
management skills, result in the loss of time, along with delay in work. Various steps that help in
the effective time management are as follows:
i. Goal setting
One of the initial and most essential steps in effective time management is setting up a
goal. It is important for me to set up a goal that I aspire to achieve. Setting up the goal is
important in order to distribute the time, among the various activities. I need set a realistic goal,

such that I will be able to achieve it within the set deadline. However, if I am not able to set a
goal that is realistic and achievable, I will not be successful in effective time management. In
order to ensure effective time management while working on the research project, the goals that I
need to set includes carrying out in-depth research, reviewing the various relevant literatures,
selecting the suitable research methodology, along with ensuring the timely completion of the
research project. Moreover, the goals that I set up needs to be SMART (Specific, Measurable,
Achievable, Realistic, and timely).
ii. Setting the priority
It is important to set priority of the tasks, in order to ensure successful time-management.
In order to set priority of the tasks, the deadline of each of the tasks needs to be set. The setting
of priority of the various tasks is important and helpful for effective time-management.
Moreover, prioritising the work will help me understand which task to do with urgency.
However, if I fail to set priority, unimportant tasks will be done earlier, than the important once.
Hence, for effective time-management, setting priority is essential.
iii. Realistic planning
Another important step in effective time-management is realistic planning. I need to set
goals that are realistic and could be achieved successfully. If I set a goal that cannot be achieved
within a stipulated amount of time, then effective time-management cannot be done. Hence, I
need to set up goals that are realistic and could be achieved within the stipulated time. Setting
realistic goals that could be achieved successfully is effective in ensuring effective time
management.

iv. Elimination of distraction
While working, I faced various distractions. The distractions resulted in delay in the
work, along with failure to meet the goals, within the stipulated time. I need to eliminate all
distractions while doing the research work. The research has to be taken up diligently, with
adequate depth of knowledge, such that I am not distracted while working. Eliminating the
various distractions will result in completion of the tasks on time, along with successful meeting
of the research goals. Moreover, by eliminating distractions around me, I am able to complete the
research project with efficiency and eliminate chances of errors and mistakes.
v. Reviewing the progress regularly
Once the goals are set, and the work is at progress, it has to be reviewed on a regular
basis. The goals and the date of achievement of the goals are to be reviewed from time to time, in
order to ensure that I have been meeting the deadlines of the goals. This regular review is
important, such that I can schedule the other tasks, accordingly. For example, by reviewing, if I
see that I have not been able to meet my previous goals, then I will reschedule my future tasks as
well. However, on reviewing, if I find that I have met the previous deadlines successfully, then I
can proceed with the schedule that I had made.
Time management has a major role to play in ensuring success in the research project. I
have learned the importance of time-management, in the completion of the research project,
along with developing the skills of time-management such that I am able to handle various tasks
simultaneously, within the stipulated time. Time-management will also help me, to accommodate
other important work, within a limited amount of time. Thus, time-management is important and
has a major role to play, in achieving success. The realization of the importance of the time-

management will help me implement this effectively such that I can manage time effectively, in
my professional career.
3. Communication
Communication is one of the essential activities that need to be done effectively, such
that I am able to complete the research project successfully. It is important that communication
among the team-mates is carried out successfully. I need to communicate successfully with my
friends as well as the important members who have a key role to play in ensuring the success of
the research project. In order to ensure effective communication, the 7C’s of communication
need to be followed diligently. The 7 C’s of communication includes being courteous while
communicating. It is important that clarity in communication is maintained, while sharing of
information. Complete information needs to be conveyed. Incomplete information being shared
will result in triggering of confusion among the people, with whom the information is being
shared. The communication that I engage in has to be concise. Overburdening the listener with
excess and irrelevant information will result in confusion. While communicating, correct
information has to be conveyed. Lack of effective communication, will delay the research
project.
Along with communication skills, powers of persuading and convincing have to be used.
While conducting the research successfully, I had to communicate with many people, including
the students of Nigeria. I had to communicate with them successfully and convince them to
cooperate with me, and highlight the various issues that the students of Nigeria are facing, while
studying at various universities of New Zealand. However, ineffective communication will result
in lack of convincing the students to cooperate with me, and help me to find out the various

issues that are faced by them. Moreover, while working in the research project, I had to take
assistance from many officials. Thus, with communication and persuasive skills, I am able to
convince them to work with me.
Action plan for personal development
In order to engage or interact with international students I will need to focus upon my
personal strengths and weaknesses which will help in recruiting the maximum number of
students for the EIT international University. In this respect, we have been engaging with
students of Nigerian origin who had been living and studying in New Zealand. In this respect
some major issues are faced by the student studying in the overseas universities. These could be
attributed to visas, money, language, difference in education systems being some of the few.
Some of these factors have often resulted in the development of additional fear and anxieties
within the student. Therefore, as a researcher I will need to highlight the positive culture and
strengths of the educational institute which can act as the Ultra Specific Points (USP) for the
same. However, in the course of interacting and engaging with the foreign based students I have
unravelled the number of flaws or weaknesses associated with me. These gaps could be mainly
addressed to the interpersonal and technical skills possessed by me which could enhance my
performance as student motivator and guide.
