Project brief
A dockyard has been turned into a new visitor centre. One of the most attractive exhibitions of
Greenwich, London is cutty sark, Victorian composite tea clipper ship (Figure 1). To protect it, a
glass canopy structure is proposed to enclose the ship with an access to deck of the ship for
visitors. Current proposals for the structural form of the partial enclosure with detailed
calculations.

DOCKYARD VISITOR CENTRE

Gross tonnage: 963 tons
Registered depth : 22.5 feet (6.9m)
Height of main mast : 152 feet (47m)
Proposal of a framed glass structure, a continuous geodesic dome, stretched long and thin, in
which the ship appears light and the roof of the visitors’ center connects to the ship and its hull
at the height and masts exposed to wind 72t of steel in quantity.

The aim of the design is to make the dockyard appear as floating on a sea of glass, implemented
as a self-supporting structure some 1,500 sqm in size, does not have any supporting beams. In
other words, the roof needed to be laterally flexible, steel framing with glass roof is proposed.
steel frame connected to supports to the concrete base using bearings. The second support
consists of a circular steel ring, below the uppermost waterline of the Ship’s hull in turn
supported by 24 angled supports by 26 giant steel struts that are anchored, extend diagonally in
the walls of the visitors’ center.
New internal compression beams then extend inside the ship between the cradles, providing
rigidity to the hull and helping to stop the warping and deformation. New structures including the
glazed canopy and the bridge are self-supporting. No new loads are imposed onto the ship and
the only incursions onto its fabric are the supporting struts and bridged hull entrance.
The 1500sqm glass canopy structure with steel framing has also been designed in accordance
with wind movement of the ship and its masts. Two entrance and exit doors with door portals
with stainless steel cladding

o Current proposal is aesthetics oriented cost effective, robust and elegant solution.
o These frames carry the weight of the ship and mast back up to new external support struts
and ties model.
o This kind of system has ability of combining with a structural steel framing together with
a shear wall and a steel frame.
o The steel and concrete have an excellent resistance to the wind loads.
o In this given project a shear frame structural system is proposed in orthogonal directions.
o All forces are transferred to the bottom of the foundation concrete base of the building.

In terms of aesthetics
o We have no vertical columns or substructure within the Dry Berth space beneath the
Ship.
o It is visually and conceptually clear that the ship is only supported by the struts and ties
giving it a view of hanging ship (Barrass, 2017, p. 438).
o In addition, dome shaped glass structure and masts give a look of ship on water.
Acoustics:
o For Exhibition centers and performance spaces, recommended noise criteria as per
guidance (Watson, 2017, p. 618).
o Fabric covered acoustical wall panels and Type II vinyl wall covering will be used in
during construction to ensure that b high level of acoustics are achieved.
Sustainable Design methodology
o During construction there is application of efficient heating, air conditioning and
ventilating systems are proposed to ensure that the required thermal comfort levels are
achieved, hence achieving a high sustainable space which will ensure that there is
minimal energy wastages.
o The designers i.e. the naval architect and the marine engineers will include in their
deism energy design concept and techniques , which will play a very crucial role in
the reduction of the overall energy consumption and hence achieving a sustainable
energy system.

o There will need to use energy efficient construction material and construction practices
o There will be water and waste management practices which will ensure that the
amount of wastes and waste water that are generated are reduced greatly
o There will be need to is external sources of energy to supplement the other sources of
energy within the system,
o The Energy-efficient, climate responsive construction is too considered at early stages of
the design procedures including initial architectural layout.
o Fuel cells to generate electricity.
o Solar panels along with the enclosure of the steel frame.
Fire and Life Safety:
o Effective fire detection system will be required to detect fire in the system. This will
include the use of smoke detectors, which will be able to detect any signs fire in order to
ensure that the right actions are taken to control the spread.
o Proper signage and lighting systems will allow easy evacuations during the fire out break
and any other emergencies. With the proper signage it will be much for people to know
which action to be taken during emergencies.
o There will be need to have in place recessed lights into the floor risers in all the seating
tiers. This will assist in reducing the accidents and injuries associated with the seating
tiers, where people who are not familiar with them find challenge during the dark hours.
o Firefighting equipment will be required to be in place so that they can be used during the
fire outbreaks. This will be carried according to the code and under stage platforms to
