Running head: SYSTEMATIC CULTURAL ISSUES AT SMRTTo what extent do business ethics concepts explain the "systematic cultural issues" at SMRT?Name of the student:Name of the university:Author note:

1SYSTEMATIC CULTURAL ISSUES AT SMRTEthical culture, ethical climate and ethical leadership are all interrelated with each otherthough has the different meaning altogether. Ethical culture can be understood as a system thatreveals how an organization is managing its ethical values like dealing with projects, employeeengagement and responsive approaches from leaders (Akdoğan, Arslan and Demirtaş 2016). Theethical climate is a workplace environment which is built upon from a set of ethical values thatalso reveals the ethical culture in the company (Akdoğan, Arslan and Demirtaş 2016). Ethicalleadership means how the managers are taking up the responsibilities to attain an ethical cultureand climate within an organization (Akdoğan, Arslan and Demirtaş 2016). These concepts arebeing addressed in this study in reference to ethical practices in SMRT which is a case studyorganization. ‘SMRT’ is a public transport company which follows multi-modal transportsystems in Singapore. The services offered through the public figure are comprised of buses, railand taxis services (Smrt.com.sg 2018). This study is purposefully aimed at understanding theethical organizational practices in context to the disruptions, flooding, lapses and fake workrecords at SMRT. As opined by Lawton and Páez (2015), ethical leadership is of high regards in context tothe formation of ethical culture and ethical climate at the organizational level. This meansmanagerial positions at the different types of organizations do play important roles in facilitatinga culture or a climate of ethical practices. The fact does indicate towards a fact; however, thisrequires a real understanding of ethical values to make it a more understandable fact to thereaders. The fact highlighted by Lawton and Páez (2015) is understandable in the viewssupported from Shin et al. (2015) which states that managers are needed to be ethical in everyorganizational regard like managerial decisions, employee involvement, corporate socialresponsibility (CSR) and stakeholder management. The few discussions which have been

The discussions have been conducted to understand the probable issues which areaffecting the cultural values at SMRT. The probable issues are not those which were beinghighlighted in few newspaper articles. These are rather the core theory of business ethics whichhas probably done the real damage. However, the facts identified for floods and lapses do help torelate it to the business theory of ethics. As stated from Yazdani and Murad (2015), businessethics do not happen on its own; these are rather formed with collective efforts from the businessleaders and cooperative hands of other stakeholders. The facts presented by Yazdani andMurad (2015) do very well indicate that there are some certain organizational based issues atSMRT. The issue is not just confined only to the managerial positions; it has rather gone to coverits employees as well. This is a real challenge to identify who is at the maximum faults. However, the theory of business ethics suggests that leaders have high involvement in inspiringethical practices at the organizational level. The new CEO of SMRT, Mr. Kuek, has indicated the very same fact as suggested by atheoretical background of business ethics. Mr. Kuek has identified the few more critical issues atSMRT. According to the new CEO of SMRT, there are evidently structural, managerial, systematic and cultural issues which are needed to be addressed (SIM 2018). The CEO hadfurther added that few employees have poor in performance and have struggled to perform totheir potentials. Although there have been few notable changes like appointing a panel fortechnical advisory and recruiting more engineers & technicians since the flood has destroyed the
