INTRODUCTION
Resort management is basically a part of the hospitality and lodging industry. There are
generally different types of managers within a hotel or resort who manages the food and
beverages department, maintenance department and activities department. On the other hand,
international resorts are those which is located at two or more countries of the world (Peischl and
Excoffier, 2015). Further, international management includes all the management activities of
resort management but along with that it also includes the major activities such as managing
political, economic, social and legal environment of different country. Resort is basically that
place where people come frequently for spending the holidays or for recreational activities.
Unlike, the hotels resort has different objectives (Glass, Kruse and Miller, 2015). The main
objectives of resort is to provide fun and entertainment to their customers as people visit there in
order for the purpose of getting relax.
This project report describes the international resort management of floating resort which
is basically a cruise resort. For this aspect, COSTA Cruise have been chosen. This resort
provides those packages which offers great value and flexibility (Beamish and Lupton, 2016).
This floating resort provides the facility of food and accommodation, along with that spa,
massage, indoor and outdoor games services. Some of the extra beneficial services are also
provided by this firm that is golf court, volleyball court where people can do fun and sports
activities. This cruise takes the round trip around the world. The company has to take care about
the external environment of all the countries and have to manage the resource activities
accordingly.

Critically examine the nature of international resorts and key drivers which shape the
development of this expanding leisure sector
According the view point of Piper (2015) international resorts are those who offers stay
and dining facility to their customers in the different parts of the world. International floating
resorts plays a vital role in offering the memorable holiday experiences to their guests. Chou and
Pramudawardhani (2015) claimed that international cruise resorts are the one who deal with the
different cultural aspects. When business organization make plan to enter in international market
then they needs to recruit and select the personnel of that respective country. Besides this,
attitude and beliefs are also the main factors which have high level of influence upon the
development of international cruise resorts. Moreover, personnel of home countries are not able
to deal with the global level customers. Thus, they needs to recruit and select the personnel of the
particular country who is familiar with the each and every aspect.
Peischl and Excoffier (2015) argued that international floating resorts also needs to
fulfill all the legal formalities in terms of visa, license etc. to work at international level.
Moreover, international cruise resorts have limited reach due the high level of legal formalities.
It may cause the global expansion of floating resorts in global market. According to the view

point of Aronson and et.al., (2014) government initiative act as driving force which compel
cruise resorts to expand their leisure activities at global level. In the present era, UK government
takes initiative to expand the business of firms of hospitality industry in cruise market. For
instance: Government offering subsidies for floating resorts who wants to serve the customers of
international market.
Fajardo and McIntire (2012) found that there is high growth in the percentage of tourists
who have desire to spend their holidays or weekends on cruise resorts. This factor also attracts
cruise to expand their business operations at global level. In the past scenario, tourist does not
give high importance to the place at which they stay. Nevertheless, in the present time customers
have desire to make the each and every moment memorable of their holidays. In addition to this,
there is a trend towards cruise wedding in the present time. It also encourage floating resorts to
expand their business operations and functions. However, it is to be critically evaluated by Glass,
Kruse and Miller (2015) that floating resort faces problem when they take decision to serve
global customers. Usually, customers prefers to consume the services of the firm which is highly
well known to them. This facet negatively hampers the growth of the business organization in
international market.
In accordance with the view point of Piper (2015) strong brand image of COSTA floating
resort is the main facet which attracts it to expand their business in global market. It provides
opportunity to the resort to build their global identity. It helps floating resort in build and sustain
competitive position in the international market. Customer loyalty of COSTA cruise resort is also
highly which helps them in gaining competitive edge in the various parts of the world. Peischl
and Excoffier (2015) said that travel and tourism industry makes remarkable contribution in the
development of economy. This industry is closely associated with the hospitality industry. Due
to this, government makes free floating resorts from legal formalities to the significant extent.
Liberal policies and rules attracts COSTA cruise resorts to expand their business operations in
overseas market.
Henderson (2005) claimed that favorable condition of the global market also attracts
cruise resorts to offer their services in the respective part of world. By conducting PESTLE
analysis COSTA cruise resort can easily assess the trend and growth of the potential market.
Moreover, expansion decision of the firm is highly dependent upon the political, economic, legal
and technical condition of the country. This statement is contradict by Aronson and et.al, (2014)

that expansion decision of the firm is also impacted by their financial capability. Company can
enter in global market only when they have enough amount of financial, human and other
resources which are required for the performance of activities in the global market.
According to the view point of Pearce (2015) merger, acquisition, licensing and
franchising are the main factors which compel firm to enter in the overseas market and thereby
enjoys benefit from it. COSTA cruise resorts can take entry in the other country by acquiring the
firm which does not have capability to operate or continue their business operations. In this,
company does not have need to make huge expenditure on advertisement with the aim to
developing awareness among the local or global customer base. In addition to this, business
organization does not require to make expenses on the recruitment, selection as well as training
and development of their employees. Through this, COSTA cruise resort can build or maintain
strategic advantage over their competitors. Moreover, firm have desire to overtake the firm who
have gained top level position in the market.
Along with that, Peischl and Excoffier (2015) has also described that as the company is
expanding, the turnover or attrition rate is increasing. The main reason behind this is that the
company does not provide proper motivation to their employees. In order to retain the skilled and
efficient employees in the company, a firm has top provide regular motivation in order to boost
the morale among work force. Glass, Kruse and Miller (2015) stated that as per the described by
McGregor those two factor can be applied on the company in order to motivate the employees.
In that one factor is motivators whose presence motivates the people that is challenges,
responsibilities, new opportunities, etc. On the other hand, extrinsic or hygienic factors such as
good working condition, extra benefit along with the fixed pay scale, recreational activities, etc.
motivates the people and help in retaining them in the company. If employees will be retained in
the organization than company can easily do the expansion of the firm. This is because,
employees will not resist for the same and also new candidates will get attracted towards the
company due to this reason.
Beamish and Lupton, (2016) has also examined that, employment of Maslow's need
hierarchy will also help in motivating the employees. In this, there are total 5 kinds of need
which help in the identification and satisfaction of needs accordingly. Motivating and retaining
employees can also be one of the key drivers which shape the development of expanding leisure
sector.

Key management issues which are related to international resort
In the competitive business arena, hotels and resorts can attain success only when they
have skills to manage their business operations and functions to the large extent. According to
the view point of Scanlon (2007) unavailability of highly skilled personnel is the main issue
which have direct influence upon the growth and success of International resort. Moreover,
talented personnel does not prefer to build their career in hospitality industry. It is the main cause
due to which business organizations are unable to recruit highly skilled and efficient personnel.
In service industry, success of the firm is highly dependent upon quality of their
personnel because they are is direct contact with the guest. However, it is to be critically
evaluated by Henderson (2005) that unavailability of skilled is not the only the affects the
managerial aspects of the firm. De-emphasis on the training and development aspect of the
personnel is one of the significant issue which have impact upon functions and operations off
business organization to the large extent. Many of the hotel and resorts fails to conduct training
and development session for their personnel. This aspect closely affects the quality of the
services which are delivered by the firm to their guests.
Beamish and Lupton (2016) claimed that technology is the main factor which also
creates problem in front of the firm. When COSTA cruise resort makes plan to operate at
international level then it requires to make assessment of the technological aspects which are
undertaken by other hospitality companies in the respective market. This aspect impose high
financial cost in front of the firm and thereby impacts their managerial aspects. Usually,
significant differences take place between the technological aspects of global and international
market. In this, company have to hire technical person who is able manage the functions in an
effectual manner. As per the view point of Pearce (2015) hike in the price of food products also
creates problems in front of the firm. In this, resorts are compelled to offer to make increase in
the price of food items which are offered by them. This situation also restricts resort to offer
luxury food items or services to their customers at reasonable rates. This factor may have
negative influence upon the sales and gross margin of the firm.
Wong and Wickham (2015) argued that economic conditions of the international market
also have impact upon the strategies and polices of firm. Inflation or deflation act as an indicator
which provides information about the growth or downsizing of market. Success of the business
organization is highly associated with the conditions which prevail in the respective economy.

Thus, in international market COSTA cruise resort also requires to make review of their existing
strategic framework in accordance with the economic condition of the respective country.
However, it is be critically evaluated by Pereira-Moliner and et.al., (2015) that economic
conditions are dynamic in nature and no one can predict this on the basis of their own
understanding. Thus, it is very difficult for the hotels and resorts to make changes in their
policies.
In accordance with the views of Nieves and Segarra-Ciprés (2015) social factors namely
belief, health and safety etc. also affect activities and functions of hotel. Usually, tastes and
preferences are vary from customer to customer. It also creates difficulty in front of the company
in relation to the serving of their customers according to their need. Besides this, now a days
guests place more emphasis upon the hygiene and quality of the food. All these aspects also act a
barrier which affects the effectual management of COSTA cruise resort at global level. Scanlon
(2007) argued that laws and legislation of international market also have significant influence
upon the activities of floating hotels and resorts. Moreover, hotel organization needs to maintain
all the health and safety standards in accordance with the legal rules and regulations. In addition
to this, minimum wage and working hours which are imposed by the government all have impact
upon the working aspects or pattern of the firm.
Productivity and profitability aspect of COSTA cruise resort is also highly affected by the
environmental aspect of the international market. As per the view point of Henderson (2005)
tourists want to visit the place whose weather is highly pleasant. Climatic condition of the market
is the main factor which determines the growth of firm. However, it is to be critically evaluated
by Beamish and Lupton (2016) that environmental aspects does not have high impact upon the
sales revenue of the company. Manager of the firm can easily attract large number of guests by
offering discounts to them. Company can raise their productivity to the significant level by
taking into consideration the promotional campaign or program.
Pearce (2015) claimed that hospitality firms also require to conduct research and
development activity to assess the needs, wants and expectations of the customers. In the
changing business surroundings taste and preferences of the customers are changed with the very
high pace. Thus, it is vital for the organization to undertake R&D activity on a periodical basis.
In this, business organization also require to hire the team of skilled personnel. Thus,
management of the international resort is heavily impacted because R&D activity imposes high

monetary cost upon the firm. However, it is to critically evaluate by Wong and Wickham (2015)
business enterprise conduct research with the aim to deliver unique offering to their customers.
In international hotel and resorts industry, there is intense competition takes place which heavily
affects the gross margin of the corporation. According the viewpoints of Pereira-Moliner and
et.al, (2015) selection of the suitable market entry strategies is the most effectual factor which
affects international growth and development of the firm. Merger, acquisition, franchisee etc. are
the ways through which one can enter in the international market. Usually, companies face
difficulty in identifying the most appropriate market entry strategies. Thus, all these issues highly
impacts the management of the resorts at global level.
According to the view point of Jaber and et.al., (2015) SWOT analysis the most effective
tool through which one can easily evaluate their internal and external business environment. It
provides deeper insight about to the firm about their strengths and weaknesses. Besides this, by
conducting SWOT analysis one can easily assess the opportunities which are present at
marketplace. It also entails the threats which have high level of impact upon the activities and
functions of the firm. Thus, it helps organization in taking benefits from external opportunities
by converting the weaknesses into strengths. Glass, Kruse and Miller (2015) emphasized that
strong market share, brand image as well as uniqueness of the offering is one of the biggest
strength of COSTA cruise resorts. Whereas low level of advertisement, unavailability of skilled
personnel affects the growth of cruise resorts.
Along with it, cruise resorts have opportunity to strengthen their brand image by
expanding their business operations and functions at international level. Besides this, company
can also enhance the skills of their personnel by conducting training and development session.
Through this, cruise resorts are able to deliver quality and satisfactorily services to their
customers by upgrading the skills of their employees.
RECOMMENDATIONS
After assessing all the issues related with the resort management at COSTA, several
recommendations can be made to the company. Through this company can improve its services
and management style. Some of the recommendations are described below:
In order to attract efficient and skilled employees towards this resort, a company can plan
attractive recruitment process. For this purpose, company can design recruitment ad in an
attractive manner and influence the candidates to build their career in this sector. The
10

company can offer attractive packages to the people so that they get attracted towards this
company.
Secondly, company should improve its internal policy and regularly motivate their
employees so that word of mouth promotion can be done by them. This will reduce the
attrition rate of employees and also it will attract more skilled candidates towards this
organization.
Next issue is of technological aspect. For that reason COSTA should focus upon the
changing technologies and cope up with them to reduce the issue of technological change.
Although this will require heavy fund for installation or up-gradation but the return of
such changes will be good. Further, the company may faces the issue in international
market, but company should import it from the host country and bring innovations. This
will help in gaining first mover advantage.
The external environment of all the countries in which operations are carried should be
analyzed by the company in advance so as to forecast the potential threats. If threats will
be recognized than company can plan alternative ways to overcome those threats and can
grab the opportunities? This way productivity can be enhanced.
COSTA should do SWOT analysis and PESTLE analysis on a regular basis in order to
analyze the internal strength and weakness and outside environment. This will help ion
tracking the progress of the company.
This resort is providing several activities and in order ti create more demand for their
cruise, COSTA can also provide activities like, theater shows, fashion contest, lounging
at the pool, etc.
Moreover, the COSTA cruise can also provide facilities like Over-the-Top villas, water
roller coaster for the enjoyment. Furthermore, the company can also provide the facilities
like free Wi-fi access so that people can remain in contact with their family and friends.
Further, this cruise resort can provide rooms services and also make available different
kinds of rooms such as honeymoon suite, deluxe rooms, premium rooms, kids’ rooms and
many more.
CONCLUSION
After preparing the project report on international resort management, it can be assessed
that with the emerging demand, need for resort management is increasing. They are mainly

established for the purpose of accommodation and dining facility. The floating resort have been
evolved with the increasing demand for the unique services. In floating resorts such as COSTA,
management become highly complicated because of the change in countries and the external
environment affects the management of resorts. Moreover, this company also faces challenges
such as less interest of efficient candidates towards this company. Along with that, technological
aspects and external environment creates issues for this company. Furthermore, company should
design attractive ads in order to attract more and more customers towards this resort. There are
various recommendations which have been suggested and implementations of those can help the
firm to reduce the impact of such issues.
