1.1 Background of the study
(Jacobsson, Boldt, & Carlsson, 2016) stated that development of Internet of Things (IoT)
was being considered as technology for the next generation. Due to advancement of the digital
technology, IoT becomes a realistic technology. Forecast of the future growth as well as
investment is being encouraged. (Kodali, Jain, Bose, & Boppana, 2017) argued that the key
approach of IoT is impression which is making different aspects of the customers. Application of
IoT is urban environment which is provided interest to the inhabitants. Smart city as well as
Home is ultimate objective for making better usage of availability of the resources and it
enhances quality of the services presented to people. It can lead to reduce operational cost of
facilities. Monitoring of the daily activities as well as generating wellness profile for people is a
key focus of this study (Santoso & Vun, 2015). The Smart City approach is used Smart Home
scenario but there are aspects of data analysis as well as machine learning which can define
facilities of the solutions related to Smart Home.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is referred to physical devices in entire world which are
connected to internet, collecting as well as sharing of data. There is addition of levels of digital
intelligence to the devices which would enable to communicate into real time data with no
human beings are involved (Yaqoob et al., 2017). It merges digital as well as physical world. The
smart home technology is to be taken so that it is provided with homeowner’s security,
convenience as well as energy efficiency by permitting to control over the smart home devices.
As a part of the internet of things (IoT), the smart home systems as well as devices are operated
together so that it can share the customer usage data among automation of the actions based on

of home automation is that it can provide peace of the mind of thee homeowners, allowed to

automation provides monitoring which can help the seniors to stay at the home in safe position
rather than moving to the nursing home and requirement of 24*7 home cares. The smart home is
being accommodating with the user preferences (Lin & Bergmann, 2016). The home automation
is helped the customers to make improvement over the efficiency. The smart home system can
able to learn human behaviors as well as ensure that the house is being cooled by time they are
arriving home for the work. In this way, same benefit is to be going for the appliances
(Jacobsson & Davidsson, 2015). By means of the home automation, energy water as well as
other resources are to be used efficiently which can help to save natural resources as well as cost
for the customers.

1.4 Justification for choosing the research topic
The research topic “Identify Activities of Daily Life in a Smart Home Environment with
the Internet of Things”, is selected for this research study so that it can discuss on advancements
of the sensors as well as Internet off Things being provisioned the home automation. There are
various opportunities which are taken to develop the smart home applications. There are various
applications of smart home are being discussed in this research paper so that the reader can
understand the benefits of it to be used into the home. There are fixed sensors which are being
discussed in the study such as motion, light, pressure, ultrasound can collect information about
the user presence. The sensors are to be used for classification of the signal patterns for motion
of the users. The sensors are to be tried to collect signals as well as machine learning method is
to be used for identification of the action types. The study is to be taken so that there is
discussion for improving and providing better way to achieve the results as well as identify the
daily activities of people life. Various scenarios are to be discussed in this paper related to smart
home automation system by means of IoT.

According to (Gunge & Yalagi, 2016), smart home automation is one the practice of
utilizing the internet-based devices for remotely as well as automatically controlling the various
types of appliances including the lighting fixtures, control appliances, security system as well as
heating system around the home. The practices that are related with smart home automation or
various types of interconnectivity households including the lightening, heating as well as security
measures with the help of the internet is becoming very much popular (Hui, Sherratt, & Sánchez,
