Enterprise Communications – Practical Activity
Practical 2
Aim
In Prac 1 you implemented a simple mail system.
Now we are going basically replicate Lab 1 but replacing hMail with a comprehensive
collaborative mail and communications system – Microsoft Exchange Server 2013/2016.
This exercise will be completed under Windows Server 2016.
Students must complete Activities 1, 2 and 3 individually.
For Activity 4 you will need to join up with a student that has completed up to the same
point in this exercise.
This is a research and development activity. It will require careful consideration and
planning. This will be considerably more complex than installing hMail.
This exercise will be completed within a VMware Workstation Environment.
You must maintain an error log sheet and mention how you troubleshot the issues.
Read the entire activity before starting!!!
Document the steps that you followed in your Journal. Journal must have full
screen and clear screenshots.
Activity 1 (Prepare existing network for exchange mail server installation)
In this activity, we will set up the base environment for completing the exercise. Note that
we will be utilising Windows Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2013/2016.
Restore the data from Prac 1 to this new Virtual Machine so that you don’t need to
Re-download the applications.
One virtual machine is to be a Domain Controller (i.e. 192.168.200.10/24)
Name: win2k16dc
Domain Name setting: <studentname>. edu.au
DNS Domain: <studentname>.edu.au
Active Directory Domain: <studentname>. edu.au
VM Memory: 2GB
VM Space: 60GB should be adequate
Gateway: 192.168.200.2
DNS: 127.0.0.1 As this machine is going to be a DNS server
The second Windows 2K16 virtual machine is joined to this domain (i.e.
192.168.200.20/24) as if it were a workstation. This makes it a “member Server”

Name: win2k16mail set an alias “mail” to this in your DNS
Domain Name setting: <studentname>.edu.au
DNS Domain: <studentname>.edu.au
Active Directory Domain: <studentname>.edu.au
VM Memory: 8GB
VM Space: 60GB should be adequate
Gateway: 192.168.200.2
DNS: 192.168.200.10
Set up a Windows 10 workstation similar to that implemented in Lab 1 along with the
same naming conventions and IP settings.
You can utilise the same VM created in Lab 1 as long as you remove it from the
domain that you created in Lab 1 first.
IP: 192.168.200.100/24 As per Lab 1
Gateway: 192.168.200.2
DNS: 192.168.200.10
Set up the DNS as discovered in Lab1 (MX records, aliases etc).
Setup the NTP service and update on client workstation
Using the windows server 2016 created in the LAB-1
Activity 2 ( Install and configure mail server )
UNCLASSIFIED : SS 18-Jul-2019 L:\CAIT\Teaching\T&L\201920\ICT50415\ENTERPRISE_COMMUNICATIONS\RESOURCES\EC_Prac2.doc
