INTERNET OF THINGS
1.0 Introduction
It can be said that Internet of Things (IoT) is the key technological aspect that people
would look forward in the coming years. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated
computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are
provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring
human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. There was a time when the technological
devices were seen and used in isolation. However, with time there has been an increase focus on
ease and convenience. The penetration of smart phone has further increase the penetration of
Internet of Things (Feki & Kawsar, 2013). The literature suggests that there are various issues
and challenges of Internet of Things. However, a lot of work is being done to make
improvements and it is expected that with time, Internet of Things infrastructure would be less
vulnerable.
There are some key common themes of risks associated with the use of Internet of
Things. These common themes are security, privacy, connectivity, usage and control (Botta &
De Donato,2 016). The objective of this report is to discuss the Internet of Things in my home
dwelling. This report is based on the eight key devices in my home setting. The report would
discuss the issues for the key devices in my home setting and the report would also discuss the
key solutions for these issues. The report highlights that the issues of IoT can be overcome with
adequate security measures in place. The next section discusses the view of Internet of Things in
my home setting.

The diagrammatic representation of Internet of Things infrastructure in my home setting
can be shown as:
It is important to mention that all the devices are not in same position. However, for the
representation purposes, the devices are shown in vicinity to each other. There are some other
devices also that could be managed remotely and can come under the umbrella of Internet of
Things. However, for this report purpose, let’s keep the discussion to the list of above devices
only. I have individual mobile application to manage each of the device. There are some devices
that could be used manual also. It means without the need of mobile application of external
support.

3.0 Description of Devices
The brief functions of these devices can be discussed as:
31. Coffee Machine
The coffee machine is one of the most widely used gadget at homes. I have Siemens
coffee maker. This coffee maker is connected and established over my home Wi-Fi Network.
3.2 Smart TV
I have a LG Smart TV that runs over my home WiFi network. There is a remote control
to manage the smart features of the TV. At the same time, there is a mobile app that could be
used to manage the smart features of my TV.
3.3 Home Lighting System
I have Philips home lighting system. I have a mobile app for lighting system and I can
manage the home lights over the mobile application. I can say that the lighting system is the
easiest to manage across all the devices that I have connected over my Internet of Things
infrastructure.

5.0 Solutions to the issues
There are three key things needing to occur to resolve the large security holes in IoT.
These three things can be discussed as:
i. Standard and interoperable security systems must be developed or built in all the IoT
devices. This will not only prevent the hacks but it will also help to identify the attempts
of hacking. Obviously, this is not easy as an integrated effort from all the vendors would

be required to develop and establish common standards. It may not be possible till there
is a crisis (Guarda & Leon, 2017).
ii. One of another solution is that IoT vendors must have regular update for their software.
The routine updates would ensure that the vulnerabilities are covered and the device is
not an easy target for hackers. It is suggested that the vendor should have a regular
timeline or plan in place with respect to the mobile apps update (Benardos & Vosniakos,
2017).
iii. The third and the simplest way is to protect the applications with password. It is a basic
hygiene factors that the users of the apps must have strong passwords in place. It is also
important that the passwords should be protected in an encrypted manner. The use of
encryption software would ensure that data is not leaked and it is not easy to understand
the data (Alur & Berger, 2016).

The above paper discusses the Internet of Things in my home setting. With the above
discussion, it can be said that IoT is a powerful thing. However, steps should be taken to ensure
that vulnerabilities are captured. Any amount of data leak from the system could be a costly
affair for user. The paper discusses the three basic solutions to the issues. The use of these
