For this assignment, you will write emails explaining a situation to both
employer and friend.
Your employer has asked you to work on a day that you had already
requested off for personal reasons. You are unable to change your plans
and therefore must explain why you are unable to work (a family
wedding or similar event is a possible choice for this). Your friend has
asked you to assist him or her with moving on the same day. Again, you
are unable to help because of the same prior engagement.
Write an email to your employer explaining why you are unable to work
on the day specified.
Hi Employer,
Hope you are doing well!
This is regarding the leave request for tomorrow. As you know it is my cousin’s wedding, there are so
many arrangements that need to be taken care of as there is no one else in the family who can solely
manage things. I know there is a work requirement in the office too on the same day and you have
asked me to work but I cannot miss the wedding as I have already made plans, booked tickets and
packed the bags. Everyone is depending on me for the pending tasks. I will manage the office work after
coming back and will also invest some extra hours to meet the deadlines. I hope you will understand the
situation and allow me to take the leave. I would be glad to assure you that I will cover all the workload
after coming back and I would be available all the time to provide assistance regarding work while I will
be away.

I came to know that you are moving in to my city and need my help. I would be so happy to help you but
I just want to let you know that I am going outstation for my cousin’s wedding. You know that there are
so many responsibilities and tasks need to be taken care of in the wedding and there is no one to take
care of all these things. I have to go there to manage everything and all my preparations are almost
done like tickets and packing. I know it is little difficult to move to a new place without someone’s help
but I hope you will understand my situation. Please don’t hesitate to call me for anything required by
you or you need some help. We will meet soon when I will come back and I will throw you a party.

In a short, 1-page reflection, explain the differences between how you
have communicated in the two emails.
The communication has been done to the employer in a formal way and I have tried to explain the
situation in a respectful manner. My family is unknown to him and I have tried to tell him all the issues
that there is no one to manage things. I have also communicated everything to the manager with a
courtesy and assure him that I will help or assist in the work. The selection of words of the e- mail is
totally formal. While writing an e-mail to the employer, it is important to show politeness instead of
rudeness.
While writing e- mail to friend, I have used a very informal way to communicate everything to him as I
know he can understand the situation in a very easy way and I need not to explain everything to him. I
have used a friendly way of communication. I have not focused too much on the language of the e- mail
as I know that he understands my sentiment and emotions.
