BUSINESS PLAN
Introduction
Schools mission statement, philosophy, and goals.
Games and sport are one of the co-curriculum activities found in almost all the schools in the
globe. Apart from breaking class monotony, there are a lot of benefits that come along with
sports starting with a general one, health benefits. It is undeniable that our bodies need physical
fitness to stay healthy as well in good shape (Barrack, Ackerman & Gibbs, 2013). Secondly,
sports help in breaking class monotony, scientifically it is proven that outdoor games can help
students be more active learners compared to learners who don’t engage in sporting or any
physical activity. Subsequently, sports can also help us realize our hidden talents. Studies show
that every individual has a secret, but many of us die without fully understanding where our
talents lie. However, participating in sport and games can enable an individual to realize his/her
ability. Talking of sport and games, Thomas Jefferson high school for science and technology is
one of the best school ranked in the U.S. that has for years showed academic prowess.
Nonetheless, they do also participate in sports and games just like other neighboring schools
around the region. Located in Virginia, Thomas Jefferson high school for science and technology
is actually among the top schools that perform well in almost all the field out of its dedicated
management and support from the surrounding neighborhood (Broglio et al., 2014). The school's
mission statement is to "provide students with a challenging learning environment focused on
math, science, and technology to inspire joy at the prospect of discovery, and to foster a culture
of innovation based on ethical behavior and the shared interests of humanity."

Thomas Jefferson high school for science and technology has some particular belief and
philosophies that define it. First of all, the schools believe in critical thinking as one of the
essential problem-solving skills that all learners should be equipped with. Students are always
sharpened of their critical thinking in the context that general life problem seeks for not only
intellectuals but also leaders especially when it comes to fixing social challenges. Another
critical philosophy is that student's integration among the community is mandatory purposely for
fostering discipline and appreciation for interaction (Burton, 2015). The school also believes in
useful communication skill as it is regarded as one of the essential tools for passing good ideas
and successful initiatives. The list is, of course, long, but lastly, I would also point that the school
has a philosophy of collaborative learning and athletics. In this context, the extracurricular
activities are used to develop leadership and interpersonal skill among the students.
History of the school, including past success and failures with relation to athletics and
athletic department.
Thomas Jefferson was established in the year 1985 as a school of science and technology. The
school is a partnership between business and schools that was aimed at improving education in
the field of science and technology. Some of the key players as far its development is concerned
to include the likes of Fairfax County public that worked together with other representatives
from the business industry in making sure that curriculum and facilities were available in the
development of the school. It is worth noting that the school specializes in providing specializes
education for selected students with presumed different types of abilities. Moreover, it also
serves another school district including the likes of Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William
counties. Speaking of school history, when it comes to athletics and athletic department, the
school has been exceptionally doing well in both indoor and outdoor co-curricular activities over

the years. The schools have for the year built itself a reputation that speaks for itself; the school
offers its students with an opportunity to enroll in any athletic sport including spring sports,
baseball, soccer/football, tennis, track and field, wrestling, volleyball, unified sports, gymnastics,
and swimming among others. Just like any other field, athletics in a game of completion and
Thomas Jefferson has of course been participating in the competition with other schools. Talking
in terms of success or failure, the school has been performing exceptionally well compared to
other neighboring competitors.
Proposed major change
As a school that is highly ranked and professionally managed, it has been able to achieve success
out of its exceptional management strategies whereby most of the staff working in the school are
employed on a contract basis. This is to enhance performance levels among the team since poor
performance can result in the termination of the contract or lack of the renewal terms. In this
case, the interscholastic athletic department at Thomas Jefferson high school is also one of the
departments where the staff is employed on a contract basis (Casa et al., 2013). Notably, when
their contracts expire, only those who performed well are maintained while poor performers are
released. Generally, when this happens, there is always a significant change in the organization
structure that affects not only the sports department but also the other department including the
likes of; management department whereby vacant posts are decided from this department.
Moreover, the most decision affecting other department are mostly decided from the
management department and therefore plays a critical part in making most of the arrangements.
The planning department is also yet another department that is affected when such changes take
a turn. It is evident that when contracts expire, and some staff loses their positions, the planning
department is responsible in making sure that their replacement is found within the shortest times

possible so that other activities run as usual. Subsequently, the planning department is also
responsible for foreseeing the general smooth running of the school from one department to
another.
Hypothetically, one of the critical factors that have to enable Thomas Jefferson to be ranked top
among other schools is its ability to make significant changes within its organizational structure.
As far their school motto is concerned, the school is always focused on achieving its targets, and
anything less than that is not on their wish list. Moreover, studies show that staff employed on a
contract basis are more likely to perform better than those used permanently. The reason behind
this theory is always evident with Thomas Jefferson as employees always strive for excellence
purposely to keep their jobs when their contracts come to an end. However, not everyone is still
lucky as some staff loses their jobs when the significant change finally comes, notably, when that
happens, there is always a change in most of the department that is affected including the likes of
administration, human resource, organization, finance, and governance within the different
departments. In this case, when some staff loses their positions, the human resource department
will, of course, be responsible for the process of replacing the unfortunate individuals with more
capable individuals, on the other hand, the finance will clear with the less miserable as they make
way for new blood. Subsequently, the administration and the governance of the school with also
take part in materializing the big decision that benefits that school’s objectives.
The reasoning for the proposed change and goals it would achieve for the school.
The proposed significant change for the school would be shifting from a permanent style of
employment to a more of contract basis. In real life, Thomas Jefferson high school is mainly
interested in employing a competitive candidate with in-depth experience from their areas of
specializations and expertise (Judge et al., 2013). However, some positions are also left for short

term employment contracts depending with the quality of services offered by the available
employees (Whisenant, Lee & Dees, 2015). Subsequently, the need to foster their interscholastic
athletic department may be archived by shifting from permanent employment basis to a contract
employment basis. The reason for this course of action would, of course, be propelled by the
need for fresh ideas and expertise in the world of athletics. It is now apparent that everything
around sports is revolving and having a change in the management or organization is now a
common thing that is happening to cut across all the athletic games. For instance, The England
Premier league and other related football clubs don't entertain lousy performance, and when that
happens, the coach's contracts are terminated for the good of the club (Courson et al., 2014).
Moreover, Thomas Jefferson high school offers a wide range of sports activities where some do
well while some don't. As schools committed into excellence, they could use the failures to learn
more about future planning cutting from the management to the field. In this regard, the main
reason for the proposed change would, therefore, to be able to make changes at ease when the
interscholastic athletic department is not conniving capable enough to take the athletics to the
other level. To mention, some of the goals that the school would be able to achieve if the
proposed change is implemented would include;
To reach top flight competition and win top trophies as well as making a name for the
school.
To build a reputation that cuts across all the competitions from academic excellence to
outdoor games.
To inspire and nature talents at Thomas Jefferson high school apart from archiving
academic excellence.

To promote and build the culture of positive social interaction among students and the
general society.
Lastly, the proposed change would aid in the attaining the best performance out of the
current management and employees in the context that they would want to keep their jobs
when their contracts expire.
Analysis of the current state of the athletics department
The current state of athletics department appears to be one of the most central areas with
the capability of performing quite several tasks that will be able to scale up most of the
operations that are known to be attached to the entire organization (Frommer et al., 2011).
Moreover, this is a department that is capable of building a strong reputation for the organization
across large groups of individuals within a short period.

(Chen, Adams-Blair & Miller, 2013). Moreover, the manager being part of the current
management has all the responsibility of ensuring that different goals and objectives that are
related to the athletics department are adequately attained within the stipulated time frame
without any complaints of barrier related issues being encountered (Guskiewicz, 2013). On the
other hand, as far as the current management is concerned, there is the assistant manager for the
department who is known to be working close to the manager to ensure that various issues are

appropriately addressed in order to attain most of the required goals in real time (Schneider,
Meeteer, Nolan & Campbell, 2017). The stakeholders also form a better part of the current
management within the boundaries of the entire athletics department. At this stage, their primary
function has been majorly to concentrate on the provision of various resources for the whole
department most so during the period when the funds are mostly required (Hardin, Cooper &
Huffman 2013). This provision of multiple resources by the stakeholders as part of the
management ensures that the entire organization is capable of adequately performing in all the
operations that it brings on board (Cooper, Cavil & Cheeks, 2014). As far as this a situation is
concerned, the stakeholders appear not to be a fountain of any money or capital related situation,
but instead, they have the capability of offering a certain level of the relevant monetary situation
to the entire organization (Prentice, 2013).
Details of the current operations
Quite several services are known to be taking place within the athletics department; these
operations aim towards ensuring that a good number of the objectives are well addressed by
appropriately following all the recommended rules and regulations (Kim & Andrew, 2013). The
current operations within the organization involve an adequate and reliable conversion of various
types of inputs into a reasonable form of goods and services that can be used by multiple targeted
personalities where most of them are known to be located in various areas (Fink, 2015). On the
other hand, the entire organization focuses on providing quality products and services about
multiple athletics operations where most of them are adequately taken care of by the whole
athletics department. The activities of the entire athletics department are fully controlled by the
use of various forms of technologies that are capable of tracking quite a several progress taking
place within the organization as a whole thereby pointing out some of the areas where loopholes

might be existing (Mazerolle, Pitney, Casa & Pagnotta,2011). This, therefore, makes it much
easier to come up with appropriate recommendations on how various issues that are related to
operations can be appropriately managed to bring out success associated conditions that are
capable of scaling up the entire organization to be the highest level.
Moreover, the current operations also include an inventory control of quite several
parameters to ensure that the entire department doesn't encounter any loss related condition that
might even end up tarnishing the reputation of the whole organization. All these current
operations are also attached to ethical considerations that have been put on board to ensure that
quite several issues are carried out in a fair and reliable manner without any complains coming
on board (Madsen, Drezner & Salerno, 2013). Through this, appropriate and safe boundaries are
further created to distinguish between some of the things that should be carried out to attain
success in real time together with the ones that should be avoided at all costs (McLeod et al.,
2013). This further brings on board various aspects of how different operations are carried out
under various conditions (Pryor et al., 2015).
The current state of the administration
The current state of the administration consists of various parameters that are
implemented more reasonably to understand what the entire organization is up to about multiple
activities (Chrisman, Quitiquit & Rivara, 2013). Moreover, it consists of a series of various
personalities who have been employed in multiple positions to undertake different tasks
according to what is required about all the available rules and regulations. As far as the entire
administration is concerned, all the individuals have been ranked from the topmost up to the least
(Forbes, Glutting & Kaminski, 2016). Below is an organizational chart that clearly shows what
taking place within the whole organization is;

From the above, it is clear that organizational chart; it is clear beyond any reasonable doubt that
the school principal is the one who is in charge of every operation that is taking place. This is
closely followed by a manager who is sufficiently helped by the assistant manager capable of
carrying out quite several operations that are relevant to what is required by the entire
organization (Mayfield, Bay & McLeod, 2013). Finally, two directors have been assigned the

Details that are related to the current financial situation
The current economic situation is known to be consisting of quite several parameters and issues
that clearly shows how the entire athletics department is capable of handling various financial
processes to attain multiple resources that are relevant in implementing quite several operations
(Miller, Lee & Martin, 2013). Currently, the entire athletics department has got enough funds
that are capable of acquiring various resources together with labor thus ensuring that there is an
adequate performance that is set to bring out the desired outcome at all time (Morris & Van
Raalte, 2016). On the other hand, there is an appropriate and reliable financial funding from
different organizations and individuals thus bringing on board a well-planned and organized
department with the capability of implementing an advanced form of financial statements that
are capable of adequately tracking the use of various finances within the entire department
(Yeung, 2015). This further prevents any loss that might be encountered as far as the financial
issues are concerned within the whole athletics department (Wham Jr, Saunders & Mensch,
2010).
