Information technology can be defined as the use of computers and electronic devices in
exchange, transmission, storage and manipulation of business data and information. TESCO Ltd.
is chain of retail grocery supermarkets headquartered in Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom
which was founded by Jack Cohen in the year 1919. In the following report, importance of
information technology in contributing to success of an organisation has been determined by
considering its benefits such as improved communication and better customer service. Ethical
and social issues of data privacy, health and safety, data security or environmental concerns have
to be considered before integration and implementation of information technology. Different
types of networking technology such as Wide Area Network or Local Area Network can be used
as per the needs and requirements. It has also been observed that internet and intranet provides
multiple benefits such as improving productivity and online sales to business organisations. At
last, various stages in the systems development life cycle have been with the help of
understanding and comprehending the importance of each stage.

1. INTRODUCTION
Information technology can be defined as the use of computers and electronic devices in
exchange, transmission, storage and manipulation of business data and information (Thatcher
and et. al., 2018). TESCO Ltd. is chain of retail grocery supermarkets headquartered in Welwyn
Garden City, United Kingdom which was founded by Jack Cohen in the year 1919. In the
following project report, an attempt is being made to determine the role and importance of
information technology in success and failure of a business organisation which also considers the
various ethical and social issues. The report also evaluates the different types of network
technology and the importance of intranet and internet. The report also evaluates the different
stages under system development life cycle to develop a better understanding of the complete
process.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Role of IT in success and failure of a business.
As per the views of Baden-Fuller and Haefliger, 2013, this decade has witnessed one of the
biggest waves of technological changes and innovations which has changed the dynamics of
operations under every industry and the exponential growth of information technology in every
business organisation is a testimony to that fact. Information Technology has a very major
influence in determining the success or failure of a business organisation primarily for medium
