INTRODUCTION
Information technology plays an important role in the current competitive world for
different businesses. It will assist in enhancing productivity and save time or money which
implement cost, reach with people needs that will lead towards development of business
technology. The report will focus on Sainsbury which is largest chain of supermarket and it is
situated in United Kingdom (Beynon-Davies, 2016). This assessment is describing role of
information technology in success and failure of an organisation. Moreover, identify ethical and
social issues which pertain in smoothly running of businesses. Also determine the difference
between types of networking technologies.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Role of Information Technology (IT) in the success or failure of Sainsbury
As per the view of Bloom (2014); Information technology is used for storing,
transmitting, receiving and manipulating data and information in context of business
organisation. The role of information technology is totally dependent on different factors such as
systematic process of change, management support, change and modify the systems. It can be
examined that such organisation does not invest capital in technology and select right path of
innovation for enhancing its market share, financial data and whole competitiveness. The role of
information technology in business is to provide opportunity in analysing specific data and plan
appropriate organisation activities. Information technology is the technology which can be used
for manipulating, storing and creating data or important information for the company. It is a set
of tools which can assist in providing accurate people along with right information at right time.
IT is not the solution to every issue, it work for people and manage their personal data in proper
manner. Most of the organisation use information technology for better communicate with their
customers, employees, business partners and suppliers. There are various ways which helps in
explaining role of information technology in the success of Sainsbury that are described as
under:

Decision Making – The company require to make decision regarding speed and accuracy
of system. Every organisation has go through a comprehensive market investigation procedure
that help management in developing right decision. Sainsbury using online method which is not
provide real time response to the audience but it will ensure about accuracy of data which
reduces the risk of human mistake.
Marketing and business growth – The success of business is lies on organisation
marketing strategies in which they can target their buyers towards latest trends and needs. In
Sainsbury, the overall marketing covers advertisement, promotion, sales and public relation that
directly impact on business growth. With the help of information technology, they are
communicated with their customers regarding new products and services and satisfy their needs
or wants (Xiang, Magnini and Fesenmaier, 2015).
Effective way of communication – If information technology is good so this can effect
on business communication activity in proper manner. This will help in reducing major issues
and errors while interacting with another person across the world. Sainsbury require to update
their systems and technology on regular basis because it assist in developing business growth at

business which are described as under:
Security – According to the Gattorna (2017); It is one of the major issue which arise in
the business due to lack of security of company products or services. Hacking information
related to firm is very easy for hackers and they use IP for hacking their computer system for
collecting data for selfish reason. When it comes to e-commerce, the hackers can interrupt the

system while person transfer their money and all the capital will be transfer to their potential
accounts that affect bank and customers who using technology. Sainsbury also focus on their
security issue because this will damage their management when this will hack by some person
for the wrongful activity.
Software piracy – It is the term which can used for describing the act of illegal copying,
distribution and usage of software without legal rights. This is very risky for Sainsbury because
hackers can easily hack their software for acquiring data and information for doing wrong
activity. They steal the legally protected software device information which create major impact
on business operations.
Social issues:
Job displacement – This is define as involuntary job losses due to different economic
factors such as economic downturns and it is made efforts for improving data across the
countries. In Sainsbury, the loss of job will create major impact on business growth because
employees are performing task for gaining higher income and profitability.
Using networking to advantages – It is one of the major social issue for an organisation
because this will play an important role in smoothly running of business operations and its
functions. When poor networking arise in the Sainsbury so this will create bad impact on
managing all desired customers details and information. Networking help firm in making
connection of business with their buyers in all across the world. If they are not maintained and
managed such issues so this can be effect on customers daily transaction and poor networking
service irritate their customers.
Identify and differentiate between various types of networking technologies
As per the view of Voogt, (2017) Networking and computer system management are
responsible for regular business operations of an organisation. They install, organise and support
a company systems that includes personal area networks (PAN), local area networks (LAN),
wide area networks (WAN), wireless local area networks (WLAN) and storage area network
(SAN). There are different types of networking technologies which are described as follows:
Personal area networks (PAN) – It is most common type of network, a PAN is develop
up with the wireless modern, computer, phones, tablets, printers, etc. and it is revolves
around one individual. Such type of networks are basically established in small
residences and offices and it can be managed by one person of an organisation through

single device. It can not be used in wide area range area where number of computers are
exist (Piotrowicz and Cuthbertson, 2014).
Local area networks (LAN) – It is totally different from PAN networking because it is
such type of network which are established in local areas it is connected groups of
computers and low voltage device. This can share information and resources in limited
areas. An organisation maintains and manage LANs. By using routers, LAN can connect
with wide area network for fast and safe data transfer.
Wide area networks (WAN) – It is slightly difficulty than a LAN, a WAN connects
computers together over the longer physical distances. This will allows computers and
low voltage technology which remotely connect with each other where one large network
assist in making communication within an organisation. Internet is one of the best
common example of WAN, which help in connecting all computers across the world in
proper manner (Eason, 2014). It is regulated and maintained by multiple management or
the public.
Wireless local area networks (WLAN) - Functioning like a LAN, WLANs help in
developing use of wireless network technology such as WiFi. It can be same as the
technology of LAN, such kind of network does not need that device which rely on
physical cables to connect various systems.
Storage area network (SAN) – It is the high speed network which connect and share
huge number of storage device to the different servers. Such type of networks does not
rely on LAN or WAN. They move their stored resources through the network and placed
them in the high performance network. There are various types of storage area network
such as virtual, unified and converged.
Metropolitan area network (MAN) – It is the computer network which directly
interconnected users with various computer resources in the large geographical area that
almost cover the local area network. But it is smaller than area covered by Wide area
network. It is different from LAN network because it is a group of computers and
connected together within similar building and MAN is larger network which usually
spans the different buildings in the same city.

provide availability to business in perform every activity effectively (Taylor, Fritsch and
Liederbach, 2014).
On the other hand, the major disadvantage of IT is that sometime businesses struggle to
afford and expensive core technology so they lose their clients. Since Sainsbury store their data
on remote cloud server that can be access online with password and username so the risk occur
for lose data by hackers.
