IOM REPORT2 IOM Report Introduction In 2010, the Institute of Medicine came up with an extensive report detailing various recommendations which pinpoint progressive planning for the nursing future. The report was a response to challenges facing nursing and offered solutions to the speedily dynamic and changing model of healthcare. The nursing profession is one of the largest segments of the healthcare system in the united states of America and having a higher educated, and well-trained nurse is expected for patient outcomes as well as patient care. In the report, it is expected that nurses should always maintain leadership roles as well as become vital healthcare policymakers to reduce costs. The IOM report states that the way and nurses were trained and educated in the early 20thcentury is not applicable in the current evolving healthcare setting especially in the United States of America. The needs for the patients are constantly evolving along with the care settings. In this paper, I will analyze recommendations of IOM report and state how I will align myself to those recommendations. Recommendation number four;Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020 The promotion of nurse’s pursuit of a doctor of philosophy degree and doctor of nursing is done through expansion programs and offering incentives. To achieve this recommendation, I will make sure that I pursue a baccalaureatedegree in nursing. Before I become a registered nurse, I will work under a qualified and professional nurse who will train me on how to undertake nursing practices like a person-centered care model (Bugel, 2018). Recommendation five; doubling the number of nurses with a doctorate by 2020
IOM REPORT3 With the ever-evolving healthcare environment, it is prudent for nurses to educate and train themselves to handle the dynamic needs of patients. I will enroll and have a doctorate so that I can lead reforms in the healthcare system at all the program levels and to lead patient outcomes development and improvement initiatives in the country (Nickitas & Feeg, 2011). The reforms that I will undertake will ensure that more nurses are enrolled in the doctoral programs. Since most of the nurses claim that Ph.D. programs are too expensive and take too long (Taylor & Neimeyer, 2012), I will ensure that I come up with reforms to change this narrative. Recommendation number six; ensuring that nurses engage in lifelong learning In this recommendation, I will undertake a continued education in which I learn from my seniors and juniors in healthcare delivery. I will always keep up to date with the emerging knowledge in nursing and advances which are undertaken in healthcare systems. The higher level of education and the job market Having a higher level of education, for instance, in BSN, will ensure that I will be highly competitive in the job market. Most employers prefer nurses having a higher degree since they believe that they are experts who have been tested. Most healthcare organizations prefer to employ nurses who would want to pursue higher roles like leadership roles. Higher education and the future of nursing Having a higher level of education like Ph.D. in nursing will make me have or pursue leadership roles in the healthcare system (Folan et al., 2012). I will be one of the policymakers who will drive the transformation in the healthcare system and also train and educate other nurses who enroll as BSN students.
IOM REPORT4 Conclusion IOM report was one of the important milestones in the healthcare system in the USA as it detailed recommendations which are to be done to reform the nursing sector.
