Consider: TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), DHCP (Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol), SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), OSI (Open System
Interconnection), FTP (File Transfer Protocol), ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol), SMTP (Simple
Mail Transfer Protocol)
In order to achieve M1, you must demonstrate that an effective approach to study and research has
been applied while evaluating the different technologies and communication protocols.
1.1 Introduction
Protocol can be defined as, a set of rules or procedures for transmitting data between electronic devices,
such as computers. When computers communicate with each other, there needs to be a common set of
rules and instructions that each computer follows. A specific set of communication rules is called a
protocol. computers can communicate with each other, by different protocols such as PPP, TCP/IP, SLIP,
HTTP, and FTP. Without protocols, network devices cannot understand the signals sent by other
networking devices. In this task I am going to evaluate different internet technologies and communication
protocols consider TCP/IP, DHCP, SNMP, OSI, FTP, ICMP and SMTP etc.
1.2 Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is a standard that defines how to establish and maintain a network
conversation via which application programs can exchange data. It is used to refer to a group of protocols
related to the TCP and IP protocols such as the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), File Transfer Protocol
(FTP), Terminal Emulation Protocol (TELNET), and so on (Bowen, 2013). TCP/IP is a set of protocols
developed to allow cooperating computers to share resources across the network. TCP/IP contains four
layers, which differ slightly from the OSI model.
