Every nation wants power in order to defend there
boundary from external interruption .For that they invest
a huge amount on there defense system and
organization .They wanted their defense technology to
be fast superior and furious.
Due to great revolution in the field of
technology the recent weapons are now been upgraded
in order to tackle any kind of unwanted ,unfortunate
events such as wars , battles or terrorist attack . In the
same revolution in technology joint light tactical vehicle
(JLTV) plays a vital role . It is the partial fleet replacement
solution for high and fast mobility as well as the
multipurpose wheeled vehicle .
Joint Light Tactical Vehicle is basically a
multipurpose vehicle/combat vehicle designed in
21stcentury which is considered to be light, and great
warrior machine. Not only this, it is also one of the best
carrier of new advance weapons which are highly
sophisticated and cause huge damage to the enemy .

The first question arises why JLTV only ? The
answer is, in the past years the vehicle used by defense
are designed thin skinned and was considered as best
forward line of the troops in a linear battlefield. But due
to a great revolution in the field of arms and
ammunations now these vehicle started to fail. The best
example of the failure is year 2001 when United States
entered in the operation for estabilishing permanent
freedom in Afganistan. US forces deployed two new
wheeled vehicle fleet developed by M114 up armored
HMMWV(UAH) (basically UAH was built after the lesson
learnt from operations is Somalia). For the two years
everything seems good but in year 2003 the Improvised
Explosive Drive (IED) began appearing on the battlefield
in Iraq . They started proving undoubtedly effective
against the thin skinned vehicles and UAH. In mid of 2003
there were 22 IED strike per month and the combat
operation starts deaccelerating as the result , in 2004
the army started facing around 600IED strikes per month.
Not only was the numbers of strikes by IED increasing but
also the sophistication and reliability of the devices were
increasing. And by 2006 the IED strikes were around
2000 per month and keeps on increasing as well. The US

defense organization than started to retrofit the soft
skinned vehicle with armor kits.
During the war against the terrorism numbers of
improvements were made in HMMWV and the UAH. The
different levels of armors called frog kits were equipped
in the vehicle and from the level I vehicle was upgraded
to level 7, but unfortunately the excess upgradation had
lead the upgraded armored HMMWV prove deficient as
the IED threat moved from side attack explosive to a
buried IED threat. The commanders wanted there vehicle
to be more protective but the up gradation proved to be
an inadequate solution to the immediate problem .
In year 2006 US army and
marine came up with the project of JLTV which is capable
of replacing HMMV. They are armored protected vehicle.
JLTV are designed by making following considerations-
(1) Payload
(2) Variant/ configurations
(3) Protection
(4) Weight range
(5) Reliability
(6) Cost

System description of JLTV :-
JLTV consists of two category of armor protected
variants
(1) 2 seat
(2) 4 seat
2 seat - it has utility as for both the base vehicle plate
form and mission package configuration
4 seat – it has two base vehicle platform –
(a) General purpose (GP)
(b) Close combat weapon carrier (CCWC)
* In General Purpose, JLTV has General Purpose and
heavy gun carrier mission packages .
* In Close Combat Weapon Carrier, JLTV has CCWC
mission package which carriers the wire command data
link, optically tracked, tube launched, guided missile
improved target acquisition system or saber and the
M2.50 caliber machine gun installed .
Now , the scientist has been working on high energy laser
capabilities and has made laser weapon having kilowatt
power . They needed a shrunk size of vehicle to carry the

Integration of laser weapon and the
JLTV shows the vehicle with growth capacity to house a
wide variety of weapon system that exist to day but also
could be developed down the road .
