JOB DESCRIPTION OF A MANAGER
Introduction:
A manager is a person who occupies the top designation or a superior position at any
firm. He is entrusted with the responsibilities of running the entire operations and taking
necessary decisions to ensure the same. In order to ensure a smooth functioning of operations, a
manager would be required to strategize, observe, evaluate, organize and also direct the various
(Tims, Bakker & Derks, 2013). This report intends to focus on the job duties as the manager of
the store of ASDA, which is one of the largest retailers of United Kingdom. This report mainly
focuses on my role and my relationships with the people I work with and how that affects my
work.
Actual Requirements of the Job:
At ASDA, I have been put in charge of the operations at the Beeston Supermarket. I am
in a leadership position where I have to lead my team members in their tasks and projects and
ensure that they are able to meet the target. As a manager, I am expected to come up with
strategies and plans which would be aligned with the business objectives of the organization. I
have to ensure that each decision I take would cater to the long term success of the association.
The plans are mainly related to human resources, corporate social duty, sales and marketing. All
of these are integral to the strategic management of the organization (Vlachos, Panagopoulos &
Rapp, 2013). One of my most important duties that I have is the execution of these strategies.
Implementation of strategies would require me to first assess the present situation and then
allocate duties and responsibilities of the task to the rest of the team members. I believe that it is
important for every member of the team to have a fair idea of their duties and responsibilities so
that strategies can be successfully implemented. I also ensure that transparent and open lines of

communication are maintained between each member of the team. Accordingly, at the beginning
of each day, I allocate tasks to the team members based on their individual strengths and
weaknesses and capabilities. This is one of my most basic tasks as a store manager – to make the
others aware of their goals. Directing the team members or effective leadership is an integral part
of my job description (McGivern et al., 2015). As the manager of the store of ASDA Beeston
Supermarket, I am supposed to instruct my immediate juniors so that they can move towards a
path to success. I would also have to monitor them and evaluate the progress made. I would do
so using a number of evaluation methods so that I can give feedback at the end of each week.
Their rewards and incentives would be decided based on my feedback.
List of Individuals who are Important for the Job:
As the manager of the store at Beeston Supermarket, I have a number of duties as
mentioned earlier. However, I also require support from a strong team of individuals who would
aid and advise me on important matters. If I were asked to list some individuals who form an
integral aspect of my team, I would have to name Ms. Lim Yung, Mrs. Mary Ann, Mr. George
Brown, Mr. Jeffery Lewis, and Mr. Ashton Bell. My performance in this case would be closely
associated to the support I receive from these people. With adequate support, I would be able to
carry out my tasks properly. These individuals are in the roles of assistant manager, sales
manager, human resource manager, marketing assistant manager, financial manager and public
relations manager. Together, we are all able to implement new strategies or work towards a
common goal.

The Principle Characteristics of Individual:
This report aims to discuss the list of the role of junior executive namely Mr. George
Brown who holds the designation of an assistant manager. Brown is a young professional of the
age of 44 hailing from the city of Yorkshire. He has just completed his Master degree in
management from the University of Aston. The sociable and soft spoken George is such an
individual with whom I always converse on trade plans, requirement of customers and other
aspects. The next person whom I would like to mention is a professional of 26 years old woman.
The name of the woman is Ms. Lim Yung who lives in Japan. Generally, she is appointed as the
executive manager of supply chain department. She has done a management degree from the
University of Bath in addition she is a trainee in the field of management. She believes in hard
work and result and a person of extrovert nature. I conduct my professional communication with
her regarding the sources that are accessible regarding the supply network over the market. In
respect with that the name which deserves mention is the name of a person who looks after the
financial department of the store. Mr. Ashton Bell is an energetic young individual who is of 25
years old and belongs from Birmingham. He has done his graduation in the field of Finance from
the University of Birmingham. Appointed as the officer at finance department of the store, Bell
is a person who looks after the financial operation of the store. My generally interact with Brown
over different modes of cost effectiveness depending on which the store can be operated. He
generally looks after the outflow of cash while eyes on the income and profit of the company.
The other person which deserves mention as an important junior employee of mine is Mrs Mary
Ann. The woman is of the age of 34 and she belongs from Britain. She occupies the designation
of an executive manager in the store looking after the marketing department of the store. She has
done her Business management from the College of Communication in London. I generally

interact with her over the topics related to publicity, public relations and marketing. Since
comprehensive marketing plans are developed by the executive officers of the company, Mary
fulfills the responsibilities of managing marketing practices in the level of local market. She also
executes the plans for social media marketing. She mainly develops plans for public relation so
that the customers can be attracted to the company and its products. She is very focused on
developing plans which can persuade the customers to the service. Another important member of
my team is Mr. Jeffrey Lewis who is 35 years old and a human resource executive. He is
responsible for maintaining a catalogue of all employees and carrying out evaluation of each
individual employee. He also provides me with feedback. It is important for me to have a proper
feedback of individual strengths and weaknesses of all employees so that I can allocate tasks
accordingly.
Nature of Interdependency:
There is interdependency in ASDA Beeston Supermarket, detectable among the
important employees of the company. There is a system exist in the organization regarding the
management of the people. The study aims to elaborate on the role of store manager thus I
require depending on my juniors. Following a policy of interdependency, every managerial
executive and member involved relies on each other for stable and effective operations. For
example, George is entrusted with the role of maintaining comprehensive overviews of
operations. He would be successful only with the assistance of Ashton, Lewis and Mary. Ashton
takes care of workforce management, raw materials, financial planning and marketing plans.
Mary is in charge of corporate social responsibilities and would need the help of Ashton for

Recommendation for Enhancing Effectiveness:
In order to ensure success of the organization and effectiveness of operations, I have a
few recommendations in mind. For example, in order to improve employee engagement, I would
like to introduce a new feedback system where the team members can include their feedback in
an anonymous fashion. This can be done using a 360 degree feedback method (Blickle et al.,
2013). Also, information technology would have to be enhanced in order to facilitate smoother
operations. An accurate information system would have to be implemented so that I can provide
adequate support to my juniors and vice versa.
Conclusion:
To conclude, the job of a manager is all encompassing and would include a plethora of
duties and responsibilities. This would also include ensuring the welfare of each individual so as
to promote employee engagement and job satisfaction.
