Importance of Johari Window in Personal Development

This paper discusses the importance of Johari Window in pointing out personal strengths and weaknesses and how to develop oneself in the professional field. It explores the concept of Johari Window and its four panes: arena, blind spot, facade, and unknown. The paper also discusses the usefulness of Johari Window in understanding oneself and overcoming conflicts. It concludes with the importance of self-disclosure and building self-awareness for personal and professional growth.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the importance of Johari Window in pointing out
the personal strength and weaknesses and how one can develop oneself to match the
expectations in the professional fields.
General overview of own Johari:
The two columns of Johari window represent the self and the two rows represent the
groups. My own Johari Window which I have completed with the help of my parents have
shown 14 onto top axis and 15 onto left axis (see Appendix 1).
 The first pane as seen in Appendix 2, represents the ‘arena’ that contains things which
I know about myself as well as the others also know (Luft & Ingham, 1961).
 The second pane is the ‘blind spot’ that contains things I do not know but the group or
people around me may know about me.
 The third pane details the hidden area or ‘façade’ that contains the information that I
know about myself but yen the others do not know (Gamayanto et al., 2019).
 The forth one is the ‘unknown’ that contains that contains the information that neither
me nor the group know about me.
My Johari window looks like the following where I need to increase the arena pane so that I
can know what my own strengths are.

Johari Window useful to understanding the sense of self:
Johari Window reveals how the persons know themselves in terms how the individual
works as well as the group works. This process of giving as well as receiving feedback in the
most important aspect of training. Through these, we get to know ourselves as well as how
the other see us are clearly understood (Luft & Ingham, 1961). Some of the very important
factors I have found in my Johari Window is that I am adaptable, energetic, intelligent,
knowledgeable and spontaneous. According to my parents I am dependable, cheerful,
nervous, observant and mature. Some of the factors are in blind spot which I have found
related to my personal experience and I keep these things away from the others.
Why is self-disclosure so challenging:
Self-disclosure is an important factor that helps people to understand their personal
aspects. These information can be evaluative or descriptive as well as can be including the

feelings, thoughts, aspirations, goals, success, failures, dreams and fears. In order to
understand the features of the individuals, we need to depend upon the self-discloser tools
like Johari Window (Saxena, 2015). This is purely dependent upon the interpersonal
communication which is the primary means of knowing one another as the unique
individuals. In most of the cases, categorizing the personal aspects become impossible for the
individuals. This is due to the fact that they themselves may not know the factors clearly
(Berland, 2017). The attitudes and behaviors are largely dependent upon the situation based
on which the individuals react in perfect manners. Therefore, finding out the personal
features and understanding how the others in the group or family sees me become
problematic.
Johari Window might be a useful for overcoming conflict
There are many aspects that the Johari Window helps to overcome. Most important of
those, is finishing method of overcoming conflicts hence this is important for understanding
the role of self-disclosure (Saxena, 2015). It is important because self-disclosure affect the
relationship of the people as the perfect understanding of the people is revealed here, all
based upon the true and dependable information. In case true information is not disclosed, the
relations can be hampered. These factors of misunderstanding among people worsen the
relation and lead to conflicts. In addition to this, the misunderstanding factors also affect the
professional relations (Luft & Ingham, 1961).
Therefore, if want to enhance my relationship with others and improve my
communication skills through knowing the self. I need to build self-awareness and know all
my own thoughts and feelings so that I can present myself to the others properly and make
them understand the features in me (Berland, 2017). This reduces the scope for
misunderstanding. Through Johari Window, when I engage my group to find out how the
members actually see me, I get the scope for making them understand how and why I react

and think in such manner (Gamayanto et al., 2019). This can thus let me know in which areas
I need to work for and what weaknesses need to be transformed into strengths. By knowing
the personal information about myself I can make myself ready to mix with others and
achieve the personal as well as professional goals.
