In the course of supporting the journalism they produce, the publishers are relying on
paywalls as their primary alternative. In recent years, the b2b publishers have been using
paywalls and subscriptions as their domains. This has been associated with the audience
recognition of the technical know-how and expertise of the titles which are worth the
payment. Paywalls were to replace the lost circulation of the newspapers and to put a value
on the exclusive content. The paywalls are the solution for the future but only for the quality
journalism (Felle 2016). The journalism business is still in the quagmire of the financial
crisis. Although paywall may come in as a solution, it has a challenge based on the limited
income it brings. In the contemporary period, information is being considered a free
commodity that gives rise to many news sites. The solution to the future viable journalism
should be pegged on adopting multiple business models. These include paywalls which
should provide free content in return for targeted advertising exposure, syndication,
micropayment PAYG among others.
The content-led media industry has dominated for long due to its capability of
producing good content and selling advertising. However, they have been derailed by their
inability to market their products to consumers. They have relied on the content to sell their
product to consumers and thus generate the audience for them to sell advertising. This model
has been rendered ineffective due to the numerous emerging non-journalistic channels that
provide the content for free. They have captured the audience and hijacked the advertising
opportunity. With the rise of fake content, the paywalls have the answer to future journalism
as long as they focus on quality journalism. It is to the affirmative that technology has
brought about the next golden age of journalism (Badcock 2017). The internet has broken the
traditional business model. Technology has influenced the journalist practices to conform
with the modest requirement.
