TITLE: To identify the extent to which knife crimes are increasing in the UK.
INTRODUCTION
A crime refers an unlawful act which is punishable by a state and others which has
authority to give punish to those who commit crimes. There are different types of crimes which
can spoil someone's life (Mumtaz, Visaria-Shah and Komath, 2019). Some types of crimes
include: kidnapping, sexual assault, property crime, robbery, knife crime etc. All are different
types of crime but all these crimes can spoil and disturb someone's life to the great extent. In the
context of knife crime, it can be said that it is a type of crime which is being done with knife or
which involve a knife. It is the big crime which is increasing because it is the easiest way for
criminal to threaten someone with a knife as a weapon. There are several reasons has been
identified which is increasing knife crimes in London, UK. One of the main reason which is
being identified is lack of opportunities as well as social deprivation. Other main reason which
lead to knife crime to the great extent is inequality. It has also identified that almost 9 in every
type of 10 crimes involve a knife crime in England and Wales. At a point of knife and sharp
instruments, criminal commit other types of crimes in order to fulfil their needs such as:
Robbery, murder et. When they feel that they are not getting enough opportunities which can
satisfy their needs and dreams than they commit crimes with knife. It is one of the main reason
as why knife crimes are increasing in mainly UK, England and Wales. In the context of knife
crimes, it can also be said that this increasing rate is putting pressure on police force protecting
people and make aware about it (Shepherd, 2019). It is hurting life of people to the great extent.
Background
This present study is based on the UK. UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland. England and Wales are 2 main countries which are mainly affected by knife
crimes or it can be said that these are countries where knife crimes are increasing to the great
extent. As per the report, it is stated that London has the largest proportion of knife crimes.
Almost 35% knife offence recorded happened in the capital. This highest rate of knife crimes in
this city is hurting lives of people and putting pressure on the government as well as police to
protect people of the UK (Yalçın Sarıbey and Hannam, 2016).
This study is also going to show the extent to which knife crimes have been increased in
the UK and its all regions. With the different points of views of authors, all information relevant

to the topic knife crimes, can get in an efficient manner. This information will help researcher in
accomplishing the main aim of this study which is to identify the degree of increasing knife
crimes in UK as well as different strategies to decrease it. It will also discuss some reasons as
why criminals commit this knife crimes. Reasons differ from each other. It depends upon the
type of crime as some criminals rob house and bank at a point of knife, some commit murder and
some commit other crimes (Straw and et.al., 2018). So, the reason of committing crimes and
using knife in crimes differ from each other. Further, this study will also discuss research
methodology which helps researcher in getting information related to knife crimes, selecting the
best way and source of information in order to accomplish aim.
Aims and Objectives
Aim
“ To identify the extent to which criminals are increasing knife crimes in the UK”.
Objectives
To identify reasons of increasing knife crimes in the UK.
To identify degree to which knife crimes has increased.
To identify ways of decreasing knife crimes and protecting people.
Research questions
1. What are some reasons which lead to knife crimes in the UK to the great extent?
2. What degree
3. Which strategies and ways can decrease knife crimes and protect people against this?
Rationale
One of the main reason of selecting this topic is to provide each and every information to
people about knife crimes which are increasing rapidly. By getting information they can make
changes in the security policies and strategies to decrease it. By making aware to people about
the ratio and data to which knife crimes are increasing and has increased, can make them able to
protect themselves in an efficient manner. It will also help polices and the government to make
changes in their policies and providing better security to people (Kirchmaier, Machin and Villa-
Llera, 2020). This research does not only will collect data and information which shows the
extent to which knife crimes are increasing but also it will discuss reasons that why criminals are
committing crimes. By getting this information this study can help police and the government to
satisfy needs of criminals and stop them from doing such types of unlawful and illegal acts. By

providing better education to them all these crimes can be reduced. Reason of selecting UK for
knife crime is it is one of the country who is affected to knife crimes to the great extent so, the
aim is to protect their people.
By conducting research and getting relevant data making use of questionnaire and others,
all people can also be aware about ways to protect themselves and understand human behaviours.
There are several ways and strategies by which people can understand intention of criminals and
other people which can protect them against becoming the victim of crimes. So, the overall aim
of selecting this topic and country is to protect people and develop strict regulations which can
decrease knife crimes in the UK.
Significance
Gun and knife crime have become a common crime because it is increasing to the great
extent. Knife crimes are increasing and it is affecting many lives of people. There are several
people in the UK which have been affected from knife crimes. Some people have ended up their
life in hospital. It can be said that it is devastating personal effects on them, their families and
their friends as well. It has increased to a extent which has increased a fear in people of the UK
and even in children as they pick up a knife to feel safer, and they do not even know that
carrying a knife can make them more likely to get into serious danger. All are these
consequences and impacts of knife crimes which are increasing in the UK, England and Wales.
So, the main benefit of conducting this research is to make people safe against these crimes by
providing actual data as well as reasons of this crime to police and the government. Protecting
people and providing better education to children is one of the main aim by which UK can make
it a well-developed country (Middleton and Shepherd, 2018). Other importance of conducting
this study on the topic of knife crimes is to educate criminals and give them proper education and
change their mind that by doing such types of unlawful acts they cannot satisfy their needs.
Scope of the study
The present study is based on the UK and its regions in which knife crimes are increasing
so. This study will help at commercial level as people and businessmen can identify reasons and
extent to which knife crimes are increasing. By getting these information they can protect
themselves against crimes. So, the main scope and importance of this study is it can help all local
people of the UK to the great extent in order to develop strategies and put pressure on the
government to make strict regulations to decrease crimes. This research will also lead to identify
5

strategies of understanding human behaviours by which people can know the intention of people
and criminals as well.
Research structure
This study is conducted in total 6 chapters in order to get effective information and make
the study successful. By dividing all elements according to chapter, viewers can analyses the
whole study effectively. First chapter is introduction which will give description of the main
topic knife crimes are increasing as well as aims and objectives on which basis further chapters
are dependent. Next chapter, chapter 2 is literature review in which all objectives will be
discussed in a detailed manner by different points of view of authors. Chapter 3 is research
methodologies in which the form of collecting information, sources of information and other
will be described in an efficient manner. Chapter 4 is data analysis and discussion in which
researcher will make use of primary and other sources like questionnaire and interview as per the
suitability of the topic. Chapter 5 is conclusion and recommendations in which as per the
above chapters, some ways will be recommended in order to decrease knife crimes and
protecting people of the UK. Last chapter, chapter 6 is reflection.
CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW
Theme 1: Identification of reasons of increasing knife crimes in the UK
In the context of knife crimes, it can be said that there is a sharp rise in specially in
England and Wales. There are several reasons which are increasing knife crimes in the UK,
England and Wales. According to the Walsh, (2018) one of the main reason in the UK as why
people are committing this crime to this extent is lack of opportunities. Due to inequality, and
lack of diversity, people are being discriminated. Some people from working class and middle
class background feel that they are being discriminated In offices and other places they feel that
they have lack opportunities as others. It decreases their morale and put pressure on them to
commit some crimes. There are several people who stated and strongly believe that lack of
opportunities and social deprivation is one of the main reason which put pressure on them to
commit crimes and perform unlawful acts. It is also said by an author that it does not mean that if
people are from middle class and working class background they are allowed and going to carry
a knife. But still when people get frustrated and feel such things than without willingness, they
commit such type of acts It is also stated that after committing such kind of unlawful acts, they
6
Document Page
regret on it but there is no mean to cry over a split milk. So, from this point of view of author it
can be said that social deprivation and lack of opportunities or inequality is one of the main
reason of increasing knife crimes in the UK.
In addition, Staniforth, and et.al., (2019) stated that personal safety has become very
important for people of the UK. They feel unsafe and that is why they carry knife with them in
order to protect themselves against such type and other types of crimes. There are 13-18 years of
child who also carry knife as they think that by carrying such types of sharp tools and knives,
they can protect themselves and can increase fear among other people. They exactly do not know
that it is the big crime and if they do such kind of acts, they will be punished. Due to lack of
knowledge and as per the published news in articles and newspaper they carry such elements.
And if they feel unsafe a little than they fear other people by these and unknowingly they commit
such acts. Children do not know that if they carry such tools than they are more likely to be a
victim of knife crimes at their own. However, despite this more people seem to be making the
decision to carry knives. It is also stated that many people especially young people and children
end up their life being stabbed by their own weapon. Many people stated that they were
protecting themselves with the help of knives and trying to increase fear among others but by this
they ended up their life by their own.
Some authors Humphreys and et.al., (2019) argued views of others and said that its all
depend upon the government, strict rules and police. So, as per them one of the main reason of
increasing knife crimes in the UK is not having enough police. In this context, it is also stated
that London losing approximate 3,000 police officers and more than 3,000 PCOs and
approximate 5,000 police staff. All these numbers are reported to be down rapidly to total of
26,800 in the capital. So, it can be said that this is one of the main reason that police numbers in
London have been cut and due to this people keep knives with them as no one are there to check
them and scan them. It is perhaps no coincidence that knife crimes has increased at the very same
time as these police numbers in the UK have been cut. In addition, they also said that this reason
lead lack of discipline in the country. Nowadays, young people are committing many crimes as
compare to old people because they learn from their elders and from their role models. At some
point they also feel that there is no one who can support them and parents are also becoming so
soft to them they even do not teach them what is the right and what is the unlawful act and if
they do unlawful acts they will be punished so strictly and hard.

It is also stated Fenwick and Fenwick, (2019) that increment in clubs for younger is also
becoming the reason of increasing knife crimes. Parents do not resist and stop their children from
going clubs and due to these children meet with other people and youngsters. When they talk and
interact than they think negative. Nowadays people often think that all negative things are
happening to them and when all these types of people meet with each other than they think about
performing such kinds of acts, and they push each other to commit crimes. So, it can be said that
freedom, liberty, changing thinking, lack of police officers, lack of opportunities is some reason
of increasing knife crimes in the UK, England and Wales.
Theme 2: Degree to which knife crimes has increased.
It is stated and often read in articles and newspaper about rise in knife crimes in the UK
and England. It is increasing day by day or year by year. Some reasons are revealed and some are
still not disclosed yet. But the question is why they are increasing and to the what extent they are
increasing. According to the Rise of Knife Crimes in England and Wales, (2019) it is stated that
approximate 43,516 knife crimes are recorded in the 2019-year ended till march. As compare to
year ended 2014 March, there is 80% increment in knife crimes. In the year of 2014, knife
crimes were approximate 23,945 and now it has increased approximate 19571. From this data, it
can clearly be said there is a huge rise in knife crimes in UK, England and Wales. It is also stated
that it is not an actual data as there are several cases who are unrevealed yet. So, from this data,
we can clearly say that knife crimes in the UK are increasing to the great extent. Out of 44 police
forces, almost 43 recorded as a rise in knife crimes in 2014. In addition, is is also said about the
age group who became victim of knife crimes are that there are people mainly with aged 19 or
over have become victims of this crime.
In addition, Winder and Griffiths, (2017) stated that purpose of criminals of using knives
was not only murder as it differs. In many cases in which criminal made use of knives were
assault and robbery. In England and Wales, it is stated that knife crimes are increasing but one of
the main crime which is increasing which involve knife is robbery and assault. Rather, these
crimes, only few were threats of murder and rape. So, from this data, it can be said that lack of
opportunity and income source is one of the main reason which put pressure on criminals to use
knives and act unlawful acts. From the robbery and assault, it can also be said that there is a
requirement to change mind of people that by doing this, they can not become rich. About half of
total knife crimes as almost 21,700 crimes which involve knives were assault which caused
8
Document Page
injury only in those cases where intention of criminals was to harm people and almost 20,172
cases were robbery which involves knives.
In addition, Ariel and Bland, (2019) also stated about the degree to which knife crimes in
the UK are increasing. But in this context, they said that among all regions of the UK, one of the
main region which is affected and where knife crimes are high is London. In addition, they stated
some data in this context and said that knife crimes are more likely to prevalent in large cities
and particularly in London. For approximate and in every 10,000 people in the capital, almost
169-170 knife crimes were in the year of 2018-2019. Some specific age group of people and
specific group of people got affected in which minority ethnic teenage boys and young black was
the most. After London, North West was reported affected the most with knife crimes as after
London, it is the region of the UK where knife crimes reported approximate 93 in per 100,000
population.
In the context of only 2018 year it is stated by Chilling Figures Reveals Horrific Extent of
UK, (2020) that more than 1,700-1,800 people were attacked with knives. Among all these the
most killed range vastly in age from 4 year to pensioners in their 90s. On this ratio and
increasing rise of knife crimes it is also said by people that one of the main reason is government
is not taking a strict action against criminals. By taking strict actions against those who have
committed knife crimes, it can create fear among all and stop them to perform such kind of
unlawful acts. In the end of the year 2018, there have been a total of approximate 272 fatal
stabbings with having at-least 1,887 were knife attacks. Among 272 fatal stabbings, almost 54
victims were those who has not even celebrated or reached their 21st birthday as they were aged
with 17-20. Other 17 victims found with aged of 16 or under. Many people said that it is all
about gang and youth but it is said by authors that it is not limited to them as it is all about every
age group because it is affecting the whole culture and all age group of people as well.
So, from the data revealed in this study it can be said that scourge of knife issue
increasing in the UK, England and Wales is not just only a youth issue as it is affecting a broad
spectrum of culture, demographic and ages.
Theme 3: Ways of decreasing knife crimes and protecting people
Knife crimes are increasing rapidly and year to year and it is important to develop
strategies to prevent people and reduce this crime. One of the best way to solve this problem and
increasing fear among criminals and those people who think about doing such kinds of acts is
9
Document Page
developing strict rules and policies by the government. It is stated O'Hagan and Long, (2019)
that the government of the UK is taking steps and making strict rules for protecting people
against knife and other crimes. They are making such types of rules for criminals who will
increase fear among others and before thinking about such kind of unlawful acts they will think
of it twice and thrice. Knife crimes are considered 4 times more common than gun and other
crimes which cause serious injury more than of gun crimes.
In addition, Vulliamy and et.al., (2018) said that convening is one of the best strategy. In
this context and in the effectiveness and importance of convening they also said that no one
single organization has that much of capability and skills to handle and solve the problem of
knife crimes and decrease them so partnership is central to the delivery of this strategy. The
Mayor in London has a unique convening power and by taking help of others and collaboration
with agencies of criminal justice they can develop the best strategy of protecting people by
reducing knife crimes in the UK. They can give better leadership to al agencies and people who
are working for protecting people against crimes which are increasing day and day and make
them feel safe. Making them feel safe can also reduce knife crimes because it is stated that
people and children keep knives with them in order to keep themselves safe and protected. So, by
developing strategies and making them feel, half of the crimes can be reduced.
In addition, in the context of role of the government in preventing crimes and protecting
people Tackling Serious Violent Crimes, (2020) also stated that, developing and making strict
regulations is the best way and for that government will have to take steps. In this context, it is
stated that the Mayor has created approximate £45 Million Young Londoners fund with the main
aim to provide young people as well as children with positive alternatives to crime. This
initiative and way by the government can also make them sure that people are living better life
and can get several opportunities as well. This fund is being used to develop some positive
activities for youngsters aged with 10-21 in order to make them positive and make them aware
about consequences of crimes. Activities include: education, culture and sport. By making
compulsion participation for young people, UK can improve lives of them and make them feel
happy as well as motivated. In addition, it is also stated that after investing £45 Million, Mayor
later invested £20.9 Million of the young Londoners fund to almost 222 projects which has
benefited to approximate 73,700 young Londoners.

For more supporting above views, Blattman, Jamison and Sheridan, (2017) said that
taking initiative in protecting people against crimes and decreasing knife crimes in the UK,
Government plays an important role. But there are several other ways by which intensity of these
crimes can be reduced. One of the best way as per this view is developing a program in which
people should be allowed to participate in programmes and cooperate to police, charities and
councils. There are several programmes have been developed in the UK and England whose
main aim is to end as well as prevent gang violence and exploitation. By working with victims
and young people who are at risk, people can help themselves and others. It can be the best way
to protect themselves and others. Police force and one organization cannot make changes in the
system and decreased crimes lonely so, by cooperating police force, agencies and others who
work for this purpose, rates of knife crimes can be decreased.
Maguire, Brookman and Robinson, (2017) argued and said that, identification and using
ways to protect people against crimes and decreasing knife crimes in the UK which are
increasing and rising depends upon the reason. So, before selecting ways it is important to
identify reasons as why crimes are increasing and from the above discussed reasons it is stated
that lack of opportunities and safety are main reasons. So, as per the reason it can be said that the
government should make a policy of anti discrimination by which all people will liable to treat
each other in an equal manner whether they are from working middle class background or from
others. So, as per the reason, educating people as they keep knives with them in order to protect
themselves but it gives reverse impacts on them. So, by educating them and make them
understand that keeping these sharp tools can be harmful and for their safety government should
increase number of police forces.

CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The research is conducted through various methods which enable scholar to proceed in
systematic way. Here, user get an overview about which methods are used in conducting this
study and finding out its reason. Besides, it is easy to get things done in proper way and
completing it effectively. Moreover, methods are reviewed and analysed properly and then
selected accordingly. the methods used in study are:-
Research philosophy
It is the first method scholar has to identify. The philosophy provides an overview of how
study will be conducted that means how data is gathered, analysis is done, outcomes are attained,
etc. so, for this there are many types of philosophies available which can be applied in it such as
positivism, pragmatism, realism, etc. (Malterud, 2019) Positivism is related to developing
knowledge and its source. The info is collected and analysed in proper way. Pragmatism deal
with only one view point of topic and on basis of it outcomes are generated. Usually, research
question is considered here. In realism, assumptions are made on scientific approach. In addition,
interpretivism is used to integrate two approaches. Also, here issues related to subject is
considered. Thus, in present study, scholar has used interpretivism philosophy. it is because the
philosophy will help in finding out why knife crimes are increasing in UK.
Research strategy
Here, the strategy reflect on way or procedure through which data is gathered. Basically,
for this two strategies are available that are qualitative and quantitative. Now, qualitative refers
to gathering only theoretical data and analysing it. in this theory, concepts, etc. is evaluated. This
is because it provides in depth info and knowledge about the topic and what other authors and
researchers have said about it (Browne, Coffey and Palermo, 2019). Thus, there are no facts and
figures gathered. However, in quantitative strategy facts and figures are gathered and interpreted.
it provides precise and accurate info about research topic. Through this, aims and objectives is
attained easily. Furthermore, in quantitative the focus is on calculations only. So, in context of
present study, researcher will use both qualitative and quantitative research strategy. This is
because it will be useful in finding out factors related to rise in knife crime and providing
numeric data as well. From that, it will be easy to achieve aims and objectives of study.
12
Document Page
Research approach
This is a procedure in which it shows how data will be evaluated by researcher and
outcome is gathered. It enables in conducting research in systematic way and generating relevant
outcomes. The approach gives insight to scholar on how data is interpreted. generally, there are
three types of approaches that are deductive, inductive and abductive. Inductive is used to
generate theories and concepts. here, hypothesis is used for it. Besides in deductive assumptions
are made and then theory is verified (Ghauri, Grønhaug and Strange, 2020). Thus, at last
conclusion is done on basis of assumption and theory. the abductive approach uses facts and
figure which are included in study. But it does not uses hypothesis in this as well. So, it is easy to
achieve aims and objectives. here, researcher will be use inductive approach. this will enable
scholar to link knife crime with theories and concepts. On basis of that, outcomes will be
obtained.
Research design
A research design is framework and step by step method to do research. By following
those precise and quality outcomes are obtained. It is necessary for scholar to proceed in
sequential manner so that study is completed on time. Exploratory and conclusive are two
designs available. In exploratory more knowledge and information is explored. Here, topic is
studied in wide area to learn about it. On other hand, in conclusive main goal is to find out
conclusion of research question. It is categorized into two that is descriptive and casual. In
descriptive only specific area is selected. However, in casual relationship of cause and effect is
determined (Kumar, 2019). So, researcher will use exploratory design in which he or she will
find out more info on knife crimes in UK. Besides, it will be easy to get reason or factors behind
rise in knife crime and how it is impacting on the behaviour of people.
Data collection methods
It is important for scholar to gather data and info precisely and accurately so that
objectives are accomplished. The data needs to be relevant and collected from authentic sources
to maintain its reliability and validity. Also, data is analysed in such a way that accurate results
are generated. there are two types in this which is primary and secondary. In primary data
collected is fresh and through various technique. The techniques are questionnaire, survey,
interview, etc. Furthermore, it is of two type that is quantitative and qualitative. Alongside, in
secondary data collection, data is collected from articles, journals, etc. so, previous data and info
13

Document Page
is gathered in it from varied sources (Mintzberg, 2019). In present study, scholar will use both
primary and secondary methods. here, secondary data will be gathered from articles, journals,
etc. related to knife crime in UK. This will be used in writing literature review. Along with it,
primary data will be collected via questionnaire. So, it will provide insight about recent situation
of knife crime.
Sampling method
The scholar needs to divide population and identify sample from them. This is because it
makes it easy to collect data. The population is categorized on basis of different factors and
criteria such as age, gender, etc. in specific area. Thus, right people are targeted through it. Here,
filtering is done to select sample. for this there are many types of methods available that is
probability and non probability (Desjardins, Key and Aschenbeck, 2019). In these two as well
there are many sub methods. In probability each sample is having equal chance of getting
selected. But in non probability there is no equal chance of getting selected. The methods
available in it are stratified, random, etc. Here, scholar will use random sampling method to filter
population. The total sample size will be 30 citizens of UK.
Data analysis
It is also crucial element in study as entire outcomes are based on it. data analysis means
to process and interpret data and info to generate relevant outcomes. However, it is necessary for
researcher to possess knowledge about how to use data analysis technique and interpret data. In
addition, use of data analysis technique depend on nature and type of research as well as data
gathered (Malterud, 2019). This is because outcomes can vary on basis of data collected and how
it is interpreted. Furthermore, data has to be interpreted in such a way that precise and accurate
results in obtained. The use of data analysis also depends on qualitative and quantitative research
method. In current study, thematic data analysis technique will be used. Here, data will be
interpreted through graphs, tables, and then analysed.
Ethical consideration
While conducting research, there are some ethical considerations which must be followed
by the researcher. Various rules and regulations are formed to conduct research in an ethical
manner. Thus, researcher followed some rules. First of all, the consent of people has been taken
who are involved in research (Kumar, 2019). Also, each individual dignity was maintained and
they were respected and treated in an equal manner. Alongside it, data collected and results
14
Document Page
obtained have been protected and secured in database. They are not shared with any other
business or person. Moreover, while gathering data, people were allowed to skip questions if
they do not want to answer so that their views and opinions can be openly taken.
Validity
It means the extent to which right elements have been used by researcher is conducting
research and interpreting data. It is necessary to use right tools so that outcomes will not get
affected. Research validity is divided into two i.e. internal and external. Internal refers to how
findings are related with reality whereas, in external, results will be simulated in outside
environment. Here, research consideration has been kept by the researcher. This is an important
part of study. It has helped in looking for the extent to which research could be carried out in
most effective and efficient manner (Mintzberg, 2019). Also, researcher has maintained the
validity of findings by ensuring that data has been collected from authentic sources. The data
analysis tools were tested and then used. It was useful in validating the data and obtaining
outcomes.

Interpretation: From the above data it is found that 22 out of 30 respondents have view
that they are strongly agree with the opinion that teaching to kids about knife crime is essential
and can help in controlling over such kind of crimes in United Kingdom. As education makes
them able to know what consequences can be faced by them if they commit such kind of crimes.
Education in school develops the mind to of learners and make them a good human being.
Otherwise, people may get connected with bad people, and they can encourage them to commit
knife crime. Through education, they can understand difference between right and wrong thing
which will eliminate the negative thoughts, and they will become a nice person. On other hand 6
out of 30 participants believed that they are disagreed with the point that teaching at schools can
help in decreasing crime rate in nation. Most of the time family background, connection with bad
friend’s force people to commit such kind of crimes. In the young age people feel so aggressive
and thing that are not according to their view point can hurt them. In such condition they may
commit knife crime in aggression. 2 out of 30 answers replied that they do not know about it.

Interpretation: From the above data it is found that 18 out of 30 respondents have view
that yes knife laws are effective enough to reduce the crime rate in country. Government of the
country has made many laws to decrease crime rate in society. Offensive weapons act 1959,
public order act 1994, criminal justice act 1988, knife act 1997 etc. many laws are made by
government. These regulations are effective to raise fear among society members that not to
commit such kind of crimes. According to these laws if someone is committing any kind of

crime then individual may have to bear punishments. Government of the nation has banned
certain kinds of knifes such as flick knife, gravity kind of knives. If someone is carrying such
kinds of knives casually then also strong action are taken against that person by police.
Individual who is carrying that knife is breach of law hence individual may have to bear two to
four-year punishment. Hence laws are very effective to control over such kinds of criminal
activities. On other hand no laws are not that much good enough to lower the crime rate in
nation. Government has made many laws and regulation to eliminate knife crime from society
but still many cases are occurring where person are getting injured to other person by using
weapon or knives. Every year government makes amendments in such laws and making
punishments harder. But still number of cases are increasing with rapid speed. From the above
details it can be interpreted that by making knife laws more effective government and police can
control over crime rate and can improve condition of societies.

Interpretation: In this open-ended questions all selected people or sample are given equal and
fair chance of sharing their views and give some recommendations on protecting people by
decreasing knife crimes in the UK. In this open-ended questions, 30 people shared their views
openly in which some people said that as per them by strengthening police force strict and
increasing number of workforce, crimes rates can be decreased. They also said that number of
police force is decreasing and it is one of the main reason as why knife crimes are increasing. On
the other hand, some people said that by developing programmes for societies and in schools,
social workers can make people aware about knife crimes and also tell them how to protect
themselves and what to do if they face such kind of situation. They said that there are several
people who think that by carrying knives they can protect themselves but rather protecting
sometimes they injure themselves with that knives. So, they can make them aware that carrying a
knife is not a solution. Whereas, some people interpreted that the government should make strict
laws regarding this.
RECOMMENDATION
On the basis of above discussed study it can be said that knife crimes are increasing to the
great extent in the UK and its almost areas. Some reasons are being also identified from the
literature chapter. In data collection and findings chapter it is analysed that people of the UK do
not feel safe in their own and local areas. They carry knife with them by thinking of that by
doing so they can protect themselves, So, in this context, it can be recommended that agencies
and organizations who work for social welfare, they should make people aware about
consequences of carrying knife with them. They should give self-defence training to all male,
females, children in order to make them able to fight if they face knife crimes and other types of
situations. In this chapter, it is also analysed that police force of the UK is not that much
effective as it should be so, it is important for the government to increase total number of police
force and give them proper training in order to make them able to decrease knife crimes. So, by
increasing number of police force and providing proper training to them knife crimes can be
decreased and can protect people against crimes. From the above study and literature review
chapter it is also analysed that inequality, lack of opportunities for middle class and other people
is one of the main reason of knife crimes. Lack of opportunities and do not get enough sources of
income put pressure on them and bind them to commit such kinds of unlawful acts. This
27
Document Page
statement and reason is being supported by people of the UK as they said that assault and
robbery are main crimes which are increasing in which criminals make use of knives. From this
point of view of people and the number of crimes of assault and robbery shows that lack of
opportunities and money is one of the main reason which bind people to become criminals. So,
in this regard, it can be recommended that the government should make effective laws regarding
fairness, equality and equal opportunities for all. It is one of the best way by which government
can decrease knife crimes and can improve morale of people as well. It is also analysed that
some people think that regulations and laws regarding crimes and criminals are not strict as it
should be. So, it can also be recommended in the context to decrease knife crimes rate which is
increasing in the UK is the government should make strict laws and take strict actions against
criminals. By doing so, other people will have fear of doing such kind of unlawful acts. So, by
strengthening laws of crimes and against criminals knife crimes rate can be decreased. People
will also feel safe and secure in their local areas.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of above discussion it can be concluded that knife crimes are increasing
regularly in UK and this is why it very serious concern for the government and its citizens. This
is definitely unlawful and those which are getting harm are innocent people and their lives are
being ruined and negatively affected. This report includes discussion over knife crime and this
has affected UK and Wales to the highest extent. This increase pressure on police and
government to protect people who are being harmed because of knife crime.
For this Aim of this study is to identify that to which extent knife crimes are increasing in
UK. Later objectives have been determined for the study and objectives to achieve through this
study are to identify the reasons behind increasing knife crimes in UK, to identify the reason to
which knife crimes in UK have increased. Lastly one of the important objective is to find the
ways in which knife crimes can be decreased so that people can be protected. The reason to
select this topic for study is that it is increasing rapidly and this have become very important to
control this crime all the criminals of this crime are hurting innocent people and ruining their
life. This is not only an unlawful act but this act is also unethical and more than that this act is
inhuman. This necessitates that this crime is controlled and life of people are saved. This study

will also help government and police so that they can control government. This will also help
people in the form that how they can protect themselves from being victim of such crime.
Importance of this report is that because of increasing to great extent this crime have
become very common in UK. Because of this crime many people have died and many faced
injuries which make lifelong impact on victims. This crime not only affect people because of
body injury but also have very significant impact on their mental condition and this not only
impact those who have been victimized but other people of UK as well because of the fear that
they might get harmed because of the crime. This significance of the topic necessitates that a
report is produced and for the purpose of this report a literature review have been conducted and
as per the review of literature there are various reasons people are committing such crimes and
some of the reasons include lack of opportunities, people are not getting opportunities to earn
and for the employment. Another reason that people are being discriminated and this cause
resentment in people, and they commit such big crimes.
Reflection
From the above research I have learnt many things. I got to know about government
legislation on criminalisation activities by using knives or any other weapon. Before conducting
this investigation, I was having no knowledge about any think related to crime rate in society and
why this is increasing day by day. But now I know factors that enhance crime rate and strategies
that may help in controlling over these kinds of criminal activities. This study has improved my
communication skill. Earlier to that I was not able to interact with unknown people. I felt lack of
confidence due to which I failed many times to convey my message to them but while working
on this project I realised that researcher must have good communication skill. If it is not there,
then researcher may get failed to get appropriate answers from participants. I learnt many
software that helped me in analysing data in effective manner. I got to know about use of excel
and forming graph on it. Through graphical representation individual can interpret data in most
significant manner. Before working on this research area I was unaware with the importance of
use of excel in dissertation. Now I realised that this may help person in showing results in most
effective manner. I improved my knowledge about the government policies and how police are
treating to criminals. Earlier to that I never paid attention on fact that teachers can help society in
controlling crime rates, they encourage students and make them aware with right path which
29
Document Page
develops positive attitude among the people. By this way they do not move on wrong path, but if
teachers are not there then people will show their aggression by engaging into criminal activities.
This study has improved my researching skills, though I was able to manage google
search well but still using scholar articles and analysing these articles were new concept for me.
While carrying out this investigation I got to know about effective researching skill that make me
able to work on future studies well. I understood importance of scheduling activities, this made
me able to manage operational activities well and meeting the set timeline. Now I am able to
divide my work properly and monitor progress as well. This can always give me benefit to finish
my work on time and manage multiple work significantly. This study has improved my
knowledge about coordination and I learnt risk management strategies. While working on this
project I had to face financial, human resource risk but I find out effective strategies through
which I have become able to manage all these risk properly. Otherwise, I might get failed to
finish this dissertation on time and with require quality. Researcher needs to follow ethics and
have to complete study by considering these ethical guidelines. I have improved my knowledge
about these ethics and followed it well that helped me in managing participants well and
completing dissertation as per the required standards.
