Introduction
Torres Strait Islanders are the indigenous people which are mainly in the part of Queensland,
Australia; they are distinct from the Aboriginal people of the rest of Australia1. In this report the
history of Koori community, impact of European settlement on the koori community is
discussed. In this the recommendations is also provided to enhance the communication with the
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI).
Culture and History of Koori community
Koori is for the indigenous Australians which are from the region of Victoria as well as New
South Wales. Therefore for the several individual as well as corporations usage of the regional
language of indigenous is referred as the sign of self-importance and pride. It is the current
community which is for the Aboriginal indigenous people, however earlier in the year 1834 it
was mentioned as Ko-re. The culture tradition of Koori community is based on the significance
for land as well as faith into the Dreamtime2.
Impact of European settlement on the Koori community
The European settlement has significantly influenced the living of Koori community because the
Europeans were in the assumption that Koori community is considered low-grade and they does
not have any knowledge as well as understanding about the traditions, philosophy and culture.
Therefore Europeans brings disease in which 50% of the Koori community population were
killed and the Koori community also lose their land as well as were forced to adopt the European
culture and lifestyle. As the result the Europeans not only takes their home, land but also affect
their entire livelihood3.

Loss of land experienced by the Koori community
The Koori community lost their land after the settlement of Europeans because Europeans
believe that land should be more productive for earning money. Therefore, the British colonist’s
takes the land of the Koori community by saying that the land was belongs to none of them. The
Koori community does not have the understanding on the ownership concept, mainly the Koori
community suffered from loss of land because majority of the population weakened from the
disease. Therefore Koori community was forced for the migration and to leave their traditional
land, culture, practices etc4.
Importance of law and kinship experienced by the Koori community
The Koori community Kinship structure is considered as the forces of cohesive which helps in
binding the population of this community in all the other regions in Australia. Therefore Kinship
also helps in the education of the child because it helps in providing understanding about the
behavior towards one another. The importance of traditional law was to protect the Koori
community from the people which harm or disturb them. However, the new policies made by the
government to address the issues faced by the Koori community that are lack of education, loss
of land etc5.
Recommendations for improving the communication with Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI)
In the organization communication may be improved among collogues which are from the ATSI
community by adopting the strategy of personal communication because it helps in maintaining
the relationship and understanding the needs of the person in effective manner. The
communication may be done by using simple words, diagrams, images because many of the
people from ATSI community do not speak English. The communication can also be improved
by making avoidance in the eye contract with the client who is from ATSI community because
