Challenges Faced by Service Workers in the Fast Food Industry_1

On the basis of interviewing a person working in the fast food restaurant as a waiter, I
have acknowledged that they have to face several issues when it comes to working environment
of their job, culture, pay structure and employment issues of service class employee. It can be
considered that this service industry provides low wages to these workers and this forces them to
find additional work for their daily livings. According to the interview, they have to deal with
low pay, by working in another area, i.e. doing multiple part-time jobs, such as working in night
clubs, serving at hotels, parties and other restaurants. They are not able to earn sufficiently from
this job, are required to work in night clubs, related restaurants, parties etc. on a part-time basis.
The issue of low wage has continued to be a constant and rising significant issue, in an
economic as well as political manner (Luce, 2014). Importantly, the issue of low income is not
new for capitalists economies, as the immense introduction of wage labour in the nineteenth
century there is debate and struggles for employees to earn higher. A core historical
development, in this regards, was the establishment of the minimum wage system. This was
generally meant to make sure that employee working receives a basic income that can sustain
them (Schnall, Dobson, Rosskam, &Elling, 2018). Although, it also shows a struggling reality of
the labour market, that in the absence of government policies and collective bargaining,
employers can make use of competition to make a reduction in wages. On the other hand, it is
also claimed that these measures suppress job opportunities and growth. Wage stagnation is also
caused by some key aspects inclusive of the shift from full employment to employability,
reduction of unions and the global ‘race to the bottom’. Low wage job is not classified by low
pay. They also state a lack of job security and the eventual higher turnover rate, with less or no
benefits, and lack of leaves and generally uneven or part-time scheduling.

From various studies, it has been evidenced that conditions of their area minute or no
improvement in the wages, employment and the working conditions of service workers(Luce,
2014). The emergence of part-time work is considerably higher in the service sector. They are
prone to various challenges and issues in their working fields and conditions,and due to this,
theyare subjected to low payin comparison to their skills and qualifications (De Peuter & Cohen,
2015). Generally, people who work in this field are low skilled, uneducated and those who have
no means for better career and growth opportunities. They are limited to changing skills
requirements and have the below-average level of workforce education.
The population of Canada has been rapidly increasing,and there is simultaneous
expansion in the economy,andalong with this, the service sector has increased its productivity
and effectiveness (MaCurdy, 2015). Despite this, there is slow growth in the working population
share employed in the service sector.
As per the conducted interview, the issues faced by workers are the low salary of service
labour, fewer employment standards and less opportunity for growth. Basically, this is more a
low categorized job, people show less respect to waiters and also there is a lot of work to do,but
the money they earn is comparatively very low. In short, such jobs require high efforts and
provides lower earnings (Hirsch, 2017). The experience of labour in this service area is mostly
unsatisfactory because they have to deal with several problems at workplace, such as workplace
stress, multitasking, attending different types of customers, conflicts and so on. The service
industry is very complicated, rigid and difficult, they have to face several problems on a daily
basis, and it is not easy to handle customers and to serve them. It requires a high amount of
patience to address conflicts or rude behaviour as well.
