We are living in a society where there are thousands of languages spoken all over the
world. Most of the contemporary children are growing up in environments where they are
exposed to different languages (Locke, 2017). This is because most are living in a multi-cultural
society. There are also children who are also not exposed to multiple languages due to the
environment that they are brought up in. Children tend to have different intellectual levels
depending on the number of languages that they are exposed to. Extensive evidence reveals that
children who are exposed to multiple languages have a higher intellectual level than the children
who are only exposed to one language. There are advantages and also disadvantages to children
who are exposed to multiple or no languages.
When children are exposed multiple languages, both of the languages are active in the
brain at the same time (De, 2017). They must mentally separate them when they are speaking.
This forces their brain to keep on switching from one language to the other and then between the
language system. This helps those children to be better problem solvers than the children who are
not exposed to multiple languages. They have a better memory thus they are able to recall things
more quickly. The emotional and social development of children exposed to more than one

different languages and are able to control their behaviors depending on where they are. This
makes them not to act out of control and are able to adjust well in groups different groups. There
also exists evidence to show that these children are more sociable then those who are not
exposed to a language.
Children who are not exposed to a language do not learn the art of appreciating different
cultures (Owens, 2016). When a child is speaking more than one language, they have that ability
