Leadership
There are several strategies that organizations can adopt to empower their leaders
and managers to be transformational leaders. Education and training is one effective
strategy. Abdulsalam, Rajab and El Seesy (2018) explained that one barrier to effective
transformational leadership is the lack of awareness among nurses. Awareness can be
achieved through education and training interventions. For instance, attending training
programs has enabled me to develop transformative attributes, set personal goals, and
evaluate my performance, which are essential attributes of a transformative leader.
Organizations can establish working atmospheres that support feedback and
communication. Feedback is essential in leadership development as it enables individuals to
understand the impact of their decisions and behaviors on other people by understanding
their behaviour from different sources; hence informing them on the areas of improvement
(Day, Fleenor, Atwater, Sturm & McKee, 2014). For example, Working in an organization
that has reliable and effective communication channels has allowed me to learn from
colleagues and develop transformative attributes.
Additionally, healthcare organizations should address organizational demands placed
on healthcare professionals such as nurses. Mitigating the demand fosters a conducive
environment for transformational leadership development (Sanner-Stiehr & Reynolds
Kueny, 2017). For instance, in situations where I have excessive workload there is limited
time for teamwork, personal development, and self-efficiency, limits me from adopting
transformational leadership.
The most important leadership characteristics in nursing include effective
communication, team orientation, and emotional intelligence. Nurse leaders are expected to
