1-What is involved in being a successful leader?
The successful leaders include the various qualities and abilities within them. There are some
traits or style of leadership helps in understanding it well. Some of those are well discussed
below-
Individual: includes some traits, styles or skills which are well explained below.
Traits include Big Five personality traits, Stogdill’s traits or Great Man Theory which are
explained as follows-
Big Five personality
The Big Five personality traits are also known as five-factor model (FFM) which is taxonomy for
the character trait. It is mainly characterised by the acronyms OCEAN or CANOE. It also
includes below points.

Skills:
Katz's Three Skills-Based Models
This theory of leadership gets considered as one of the most important theories which have been
developed by Robert Katz in 1955. He recognised various technical related abilities which are
related to the pitch, some of the conceptual or public abilities which are related to setting the
thoughts and ideas as the main area, the abilities of human which are related to the interacting
with people and many more which are importantly required to maintain or develop by the
leaders. Katz's Three Skills-Based Model is the most important model of leadership which

focuses on the attention on the skills which are necessary for the company .Mumford was the one
who announced social verdict capabilities, overall information’s, problem-solving capabilities as
the main requirements in a leader. It includes higher leaders to study on their all conceptual skills
and practical leaders to sturdier about the technical capabilities(Nicholls, et. al., 2018).

Styles:
Lewin’s style of leadership
Kurt Lewin has demonstrated an aspect which explains the outlook of a leader that leadership
style is so important for making the changes. Three flairs of leadership have been prepared by
Kurt Lewin or his team that is laissez-faire, autocratic, democratic and etc. The democratic
leaders mostly undertake the lively role in making the procedure of choice. It also includes the
Laissez-faire runners for participating in making the choice on their own, or in parting stuff to
the supporters.
Managerial Grid

The model of the managerial grid is a model of leadership style which has been developed in
1964 and established by Sir, Robert R. Blake & June Mouton. It recognises the five dissimilar
classes of leadership which are grounded in apprehension for anxiety and persons for the various
innovations of inventions as well (Northouse, 2017).
Contextual:
Situational Approach
This theory of leadership mainly assists that there is no any specific leadership style on top. It
also suggests that what kinds of leadership or strategies are good for the tasks. It adds
attractiveness or and accomplishments to the performance.

Path-Goal Theory
The path goal theory helps in identifying the leader’s behaviour and traits. This
leadership theory benefits in accomplishing the interests, ideals and goals of the team to
inspire them to work in the direction of the job. This theory well defines that the behaviour

of a leader is depending on the motivation, performance and satisfaction of her or his
subordinates

Relational:
Transformational Leadership
It is the leadership where the fortune’s mechanisms are required to recognize the variations in
their activities. It also includes the dreams of directing or leading a transformation with the
inspiration or implementing some transformation in the cycle (Priest, et. al., 2017).
Leader-Member Exchange Theory
This theory arises when the leaders and followers are perfectly capable to develop the operative
connections which make consequences in the joint effects. This theory has been discovered by
the UHI-Bien & Graen.

2-Can good leadership is developed, and if so, how?
In an order to run the business in an appropriate manner it is important to develop a good
leadership. For developing the good leadership there are various ways. Some of those are
discussed below-
Individual perspective
Leadership is so decisive or practical characteristics which actually develops the various
processes and procedures for achieving the objectives. It includes the perfect understanding of
taking the decisions effectively, precisely and efficiently so that target can get achieved properly.
There are so many characteristics can get found on the prominent leaders. Some of the traits or
characteristics are vision, strong personality, trustworthiness, accountability, resilience and etc.
(Ross, 2013).
Leadership is all about motivating a team to work in an effective and efficient manner so that the
organizational goals and objective scan be accomplished. From an individual’s perspective
leadership helps in motivating people to work more. Leadership directs the people in the right
direction. Leadership is more of an applied and a conclusive characteristic which changes during
the course of accomplishment of objective
Relational Perspective
A good leadership includes the qualities of trusting or helping the employees to work with
efficiency. They motivate the workers to perform with confidence. A good leader requires
encouraging their team for performing together and attractively. A leader is responsible for
completing all the works and tasks carefully and properly as well. A good leader is required to be
very attentive, creative or innovative to all situations or conditions whether if it is negative or
positive. In order to get the best results or outcomes, a leader requires a good team which can
support him or her attractively. He is the person who appreciates the teammates for their better
performance. A leader is also required to be always accountable towards the success of the team
or group. A good leader is required to deal with some people to get encountered with some of the
circumstances or situations. He or she basically requires a strong personality so that negative

situations can get encountered in the perfect time frame. In the situations of uncertainty, a leader
requires to be very effective & presentative all the time so that negativity or loss can take no
place anywhere. A leader is completely responsible for arranging all the important things for the
betterment of the business. It also includes minimising the risk factors. It also includes some
examples such as technical skill, communication skills, people skills, knowledge and etc. These
are also discussed below herein-
Technical Skills
A good leader requires all the technical skills which can get used in the business in any manner
for the success or improvement of it. Adoption of all the updated technologies at the required
time is so important to get include in the environment of business. Good knowledge of technical
skills helps the business to grow faster. Without having proper knowledge of it, a leader becomes
unable to meet the business requirements in a proper manner. Having proper knowledge of the
same helps in managing the business activities in a proper manner and efficiently as well
(Bolman, et. al., 2017).
Communication Skills
It is well known that in order to run the business with positivity and without conflicts
maintaining the good communication skills are importantly required. It helps the people to
encourage themselves towards their objectives or gaols in a proper manner. Communication also
helps in building the strong bond between the followers and leader which helps in maintaining
the positive environment in the business. This is how it can be said that in order to meet the
efficiency of the business communication skills is essential in a good leader (Samuels, et. al.,
2017).
Contextual Perspective
The main aim of a leader is to fulfil all the business requirements in an appropriate manner. It
gets considered as the most important characteristics of a leader which helps him or her to be
successful in each and every manner. It has been observed that leaders thought process gets
decided by the majority of results of a project or ideas. A leader is required to be enthusiastic in

the various ways of pessimistic, pain or adversity. It has been stated and well understood before
that the good leaders are born with tragedy or during the bad times. A leader is required to be
optimistic so that he or she can perform greatly. It helps a leader to motivate his or her team to
perform with efficiency and represent themselves with attractive results. It also increases the
motivation, efforts or confidence of team members (Wildavsky, 2017).

3. What distinguishes leadership from management?
Leaders and managers are very important for running the business in an efficient manner. Both
of them work so hard for meeting the needs and requirements of the business in a proper manner.
Managers are responsible for managing each and every activity in an appropriate manner and
directing the business in the perfect direction. On the other hand, leaders are the one who always
influences people to perform gratefully (Goleman, 2017).
Leadership
Leaders get considered as a superior personality who always focuses on people and motivates
them to perform so attractively and with quality as well. They focus on the objectives of the
business to accomplish them willingly and enthusiastically as well. A leader motivates the people
to work in the required and perfect direction. A good leader also includes the talent of leading a
group or crowd &encourages them in their desired direction. This process or procedure mainly
consists of manipulating the crowd or an individual. It helps them in the accomplishments of
objectives & goals in a proper manner. A leader basically includes the various abilities or
capabilities for motivating people or directing them for meeting their needs and requirements in a
well-behaved manner (Ward, 2016).
Management
Management is an art of managing and running business in a successful manner. Managers get
considered as the responsible person for maintaining, managing or designing the various
activities of the association in an attractive manner it also includes the art of completing the tasks
in an appropriate manner and in the limited time frame. Management basically denoted to a
process or procedure which gets used by the people for dealing and managing people from
different age group for meeting the company’s goals (Antonakis, et. al., 2017). Management
takes place in various areas such as hospitality, offices, sports, education and etc.

Difference between leadership and management
The prime difference between leadership and management is that leadership is for leading the
formal or informal groups or crowd wherein management only maintains the crowd of people.
Both Managers and leaders work in the same direction for the betterment of business. The
differences among the two are stated below:
Management Leadership
Management includes the activities of
managing or designing the business activities
in an appropriate manner.
Leadership is well known for the quality of
influencing or motivating people to perform
better.
The manager organises and motivates the
people to perform harder.
The leaders always encourage people.

Manager includes the proper control within and
on employees to perform great.
A leader also includes the faith in the
employees to perform better.
A manager always influences people for
bringing the chain.
Leaders are the one who brings the consistency
in the association.
The strategy of management is to be reactive. On the other hand strategy of leadership is to
be proactive.
The management generally includes the
formulation of policies or procedures in an
appropriate manner.
Wherein the leaders include the principles and
proper guidelines (Heizer, 2016).
For example- Leadership and management both works together. It has been observed that the
directors are the one who requires various abilities of leadership for investigating. Brigadier
John Enoch Powell is one of the most famous British politicians who just attended as the
Minister of Health and a Member of Parliament. He is mainly recalled for his robust
opinions on migration, particularly his ‘Rivers of Blood’ speaking which shaped much
disagreement. Similarly, Nigel Paul Farage is a very famous British broadcaster, political analyst
and politician who are the leader of United Kingdom independence party. He influenced people
to work in a democratic manner. (Jay, 2016)
All the managers and leader are required to be very attentive all the time so that business cannot
get into the situation of loss or negativity. A good leader and manager contribute so greatly to the
success of the association in various manners. They also help the association in reducing all the
risk factors or all those issues which can ever impact negatively on the activities of the business
or can hamper the success of the business in any manner (Krajewski, et. al., 2015).

4. What have you learnt about leadership from your own experiences, on this course and
elsewhere?
The skill of leadership has helped me so greatly to perform enthusiastically an attentively to get
the better results. I became capable to work under pressure or efficiently. It has also helped in
being presentable in various manners. My communication skills have been improved which has
been contributed so greatly in adding some more attractive ways to perform. It has improved the
way of talking or to communicate with people. On the other hand, I also became able to perform
gratefully in various manners. The improved leadership skills have added to behave positively
and mannerly with others. These improvements have helped me to perform so greatly and with
quality as well. By this, my listening skills have also been improved because of which I got so
many benefits to perform well. It has been included so many creative and innovative ways to
perform with efficiency. Because of the improved listening skills, I became able to add some
more verities and ways to perform well in the association. My improved leadership skills have
helped me in creating a healthy and peaceful atmosphere in the association. On the other hand, so
many theories of leadership have also contributed very well in marinating the structure of the
business. By the use of contingency theory, I became able to organise the various activities in the
association. It has also helped me so attractively in leading the business in an appropriate
manner. As same situational leadership theory has helped me in encouraging and motivating the
employees for increasing the production of the business. The increased production helps in
improving the profitability of the business. It has also helped me in improving the effectiveness
and efficiency of the business in an appropriate manner.
Negatives
Various times it has been observed by me that concepts or theories of leadership come up with
some disputes. It has affected my performance and me in a negative manner. Because of these
my professionalism or quality of working has also affected. Sometimes I became so
unaccountable or irresponsible towards my work and performance. It has affected me in setting
the clear objectives which have hampered the growth and development of the business.

Positive
All the leadership skills helped me so greatly to inspire and influence people to perform
attractively. As same it has also contributed so effectively in becoming a good communicator or
presentable as well. An improved communication skill of mine has also helped me in becoming a
good speaker. As some good listening skills have helped me to include various qualities which
can add some greater benefits in my performance. I became innovative or collaborative. My
curiosity &excitement has also been increased to perform with more creativeness and
innovations as well. These improved qualities in mine have helped me in guiding and assisting
the people in the proper manner to perform well and attractively. The self-managing skills have
also been improved which greatly contributes to getting the good results or outcomes. It has also
helped me in reducing the chances of negativity or loss from the business. As same as all the risk
factors which can take the business into the situation of risk has also been reduced completely.
By this, I got to learn that being flexible and efficient is importantly required to perform well or
with quality. It is very important for me to focus on the development and growth of the
operational activities. Being positive is also required in the same manner. It also helps in
increasing the productivity and positivity of the business in various manners. Having knowledge
regarding the leadership skills helped me to deal with complicated situations in a well-organized
manner. Leadership and management skills are essential for me in shaping my future.
