Leadership competency model:
Every person in his life time idolizes someone or gets inspired by somebody. He
may be a hero, a leader, a boss or a CEO of a company. One thing is common that
he or she is charismatic, exerts influence, tactful in handling challenging situation
and his mere presence gives a positive vibes to his or her colleague and is a
motivation for others. Who are they? Different models has discussed about certain
characteristics, attributes, behavior or skills that makes the person capable of
leading by example. They are the one who are trend setter, motivator, as a coach
and is inspiring. He may be a brand in himself, like Messi for Barcelona, Bill Gates
for Microsoft and Obama for America to name a few.
To become a successful CEO of a company, one should posses certain quality,
capabilities, know- how and behavior that gets acknowledged not only by his
colleague inside the organization but other stakeholder of the organization as well.
They are the one who bring trust in the outcome of the company performance. This
could only be made possible if the leader is visionary and has the ability to share his
vision with others. This connectivity of sharing and making others believe in them
requires communication, business skills, knowledge and integrity.
Globalization and rising competitiveness requires more of a social intelligence from
a CEO (Riggio, 2014). He must be adaptable to different situation and empathetic
towards other culture and values. Social intelligence allows the leader to better
understand others and situation so that he can understand others perspective as to
what actually needs to be done. It also creates an instant bonhomie with the fellow
colleague irrespective of the diversity and is thereby connects them to the mission
of the organization (SHRM, 2008).

A leader should have the courage to take decision and take a stand on it, if he is
convinced by its outcome. He should be the one who has the courage to accept the
failure and learn from those failures rather than failing to do for the fear of failure.
They are the one who sets the trends, on the direction of which other wants to
traverse. Smart leader knows the art of taking work from others and is also a
developer of many other leaders. At times, he puts himself back and leads as a
coach and lets other to decide for him. It is his ability to sense when to come
forward and lead and when to let loose so that the others can decide.
A leader is a also a political master who is very much aware of the political games
that are played in the organization and the type of culture that an organization
posses. It’s through his knowledge, political skills and strategic decision (Mc
Williams, 2007); he is able to bring change in the organization.
