Bill Gates is an American author, business magnate, investor and philanthropist and he born
on 28 October 1955. Bill gates is one of the most inspirational and charismatic leader across
the whole world. He is known as richest person in the whole world. He has received various
awards in his life such as Bower award for leadership in business, National medal of
innovation and technology and Mary Woodard award for the Public services. Bill Gates is the
only person behind the success of Microsoft as well as software industry across worldwide
because he founded this software in 1975 and which has become largest software worldwide.
Today, Microsoft is one of the successful software across the whole world due to the
leadership qualities of Bill Gates (Mumford, Partlow and Medeiros, 2013).
I choose Bill Gates as a leader because of his effective leadership qualities and other reasons
such as:
1. Bill Gates always focuses on one goal and also asks to their team members to focus
on specific goal. He only focused on the software industry.
2. Leader should have clear through about what are their goals. Bill Gates dreamt big
and tries to achieve his objectives with clear through.
3. He is a most passionate person for software.
4. A leader should always ready to learn new knowledge and new things. Bill Gates still
always ready to learn from every person.
5. He always show care towards their team members.
6. He is the richest person in the whole world and as a leader he inspired billion of
people from his work and leadership quality.
7. He won various awards and achievement in his life as a leader.
Overview of the leader –
Leadership play an essential role for every organization because it helps them in achieiving
their objectives and goals. Leadership refers to the leading a team or group of people or an
organisation. In other words, leadership means implementing planning or strategies,
motivating, helping the people, providing direction and solving the conflicts between
members of the team, so this will help in achieving organizational goals. Leader is one of the
factors of leadership. Leader refers as a person who guides their employees. Good leader
should have essential qualities such as honesty, trust, confidence, communication skills, good
convincing power, passionate, influencing skills, accountability and ability to take good
decisions for their team. (Pavur, 2012). Bill Gates follows autocratic leadership style of

management within the organization to lead their team members. He also used other
leadership style as per the situations within the organization.
Leadership traits, qualities, motives and characteristics of Bill gates –
1. Focus: A good leader focus on one particular thing then only he can get success. Bill
Gates also focuses on the only one thing which is Microsoft software then he makes it
success in the whole world.
2. Big picture: He has a big picture as he always think practically before setting goals
and to achieve his goals and objectives. He followed step based process to achieve his
goals.
3. Creativity: He believes in doing creative and innovative thing, so he also encourages
their team members to embrace creativity.
4. Caring: He is a most caring person towards his team members or any other person
even when he is world’s richest person.
5. Passionate: He is also passionate person, so because of this he succeeds in his life.
6. Growing and learning: Bill Gates also ready to learn new things and new knowledge
from everyone. He did lot of efforts to improve his communication skills and gain
more knowledge.
7. Arrogance: Bill Gates also an arrogant person as he follow autocratic leadership style
for leading their team members.
8. Avoidance of conflicts: Bill Gates tries to avoid conflict, which was arisen between
their team members (Hedayati, 2014).
Roles and responsibilities of Bill Gates as a leader –
1. Bill Gates is responsible to managing the Microsoft and taking all key decisions
related to achievement of organizational goals and objectives and the decisions which
can benefit to the organization.
2. He also plan an essential role in the technical development related to new product
within the organization.
3. Bill Gates also attend various meeting with their customers and he also connected
with his employees through Emails and face to face communication sessions.
4. His responsibility also includes policy related to global technology, diversity of
business incubation as well as technical activities (Rampton, 2016).

Leadership theory –
Leadership theory should be follow by every leader because it helps them in guiding how to
use behaviours related to leadership in a specific environment to lead their team members
towards the achieving the goals and objectives of the organization. There are various theories
of leadership which show the Bill Gates’ overall leadership qualities, methods and motives.
These are the following:
1. Great Man Theory – As per this theory, good leader are born, they are not made. Bill
Gates is a great leader because he has various essential traits of a good leader which
described the above and he is a richest person across the whole world.
2. Trait Theory: - This theory is similar to Great Man Theory. Trait refers to attributes or
skills of a leader. For good leader, they should have some essential traits. Bill Gates
has several skills which helped them in success in software industry, success in his
career and became the richest person in whole world such as creativity, passionate,
caring for other, growing and continuous learner and focus on particular thing.
3. Transformational Theory: - This theory states the effective relationship between
leader and their team members, so they can encourage each other. Bill Gates follow
autocratic leadership style and also ignore the conflicts which arose between their
team members, so they did not use transformational theory of leadership because he
did not focus on the employee welfare (About Bill Gates, 2019).
4. Participative Theory: - As per the theory, team members can also participate during
decision making process. He also follows participative leadership style, so he allowed
his team members to participate in decision making process or any essential decisions
for the benefit of the organization. He also gave chance to his team members for
giving their suggestions, so it helped them to improve their strategies towards their
goals.
5. Behavioural theory of leadership: - Behaviour theory also known as style theory of
leadership. The theory says that effective behaviour of the leader is essential towards
their team members. It also includes the type of style of leadership such as
transformative, participant, autocratic and Laissez faire etc. used by the leader. Bill
Gates follows transformational style of leadership for developing his business. He
implements various changes at Microsoft as a leader because he was able to transform
the software industry or computing industry.

6. Contingency theory: - The theory says that no single method can be used by leader to
lead team. It can be change as per the situations. Bill Gates always took decisions for
the benefits of the company on the basis of situations within the organization. He
always shows care for every member of the organization.
7. Situational Theory: - This theory states that leader has to choose effective leadership
style which can suits in the situation. Bill Gates generally follow autocratic style of
leadership but he also uses transformational style of leadership, task oriented style and
delegation leadership style of management as per the situation which faced by them in
his organization and when the above leadership style has to need to follow to lead
their team members in the organization (Amanchukwu, 2015).
Hence, Bill Gates has various qualities and traits of leadership which helps them in leading
their team and also help in managing the company and achieving the organizational overall
goals. His leadership qualities are growing and always ready to learn new things, passionate
person towards his goals, focus on particular goal, always show care for others and he has
creative skills too. I chose Bill gates as a leader because he inspired billion of people through
his leadership style and structure, has various leadership qualities, richest person across the
world, he has clear goal and he achieve success in his life and many awards as a leader.
Leadership theory guide the leader to lead their tem in better way and leadership theories say
that leader is a person who guides or supports his team members in an effective way. As per
the qualities of Bill Gates which were described the above, he is an effective leader. He knew
what he wanted to achieve and he focused only on that particular goal, later he succeed in
achievement of his goal which is Microsoft and also gain various awards. Bill Gates use
various leadership theory to lead their team members such as trait theory, contingency theory,
situational theory, participative theory and Great Man Theory of leadership So, The above
theory helps him in leading or guiding their team efficiently and effectively and also help
them in achieving his goals.
