“Challenges of leadership in Today’s world”
Leaders have an important role in managing the operational activities of the company. It
has been analyzed that without leaders it would not be possible for the company to attain the set
goals and objectives in the competitive market. Leaders are the individuals who emphasize on
giving direction and also set rules and regulations in the workplace. It is necessary to have
effective leaders as it will help the companies to enhance their success possibilities (Antonakis &
Day, 2017). In this paper, the discussion will be made on the “challenges faced by the leaders in
today’s world”. The recommendations will also be given to improve the quality of the leadership.
It is examined that there are various challenges related to leading the organization in
today’s world. One of the challenges relates to developing the managerial effectiveness. It can be
investigated that it is the challenge to develop the relevant skills such as strategic thinking, time
management and also decision making process. Leader’s focus on boosting the effectiveness of
work, so they emphasize on developing the managerial effectiveness but it is the challenge that is
faced by them in the present era. It is not easy for the leaders to develop the managerial skills
among the subordinates as the behavior of individuals varies from each other (Komives &
Wagner, 2016).
Failure to communicate is also the challenge that is faced at the time of leading the
company in today’s world. It is examined that complexity in the present business world need the
CEO to communicate on the different levels. For example: If the leaders have to make the vision
to persuade the team to create their own vision, then the leader has to connect on the individual
level. But due to the high pressure of competition the leaders are not able to communicate
effectively with their employees an instead of communication they make rules and regulations
that should be followed. In this case the challenge faced by the leaders also relates with boosting
the efficiency of the employees towards their work (Mendenhall et al., 2017).
Inspiring other person is the major challenge that is faced by the leaders in the present
business world. It has been evaluated that in the competitive market, it is not an easy job to
motivate and inspire the employees to work effectively towards the set goals and objectives of
the company. It is important for the leader to ensure that the employees are satisfied with their
and working in a smart manner. But as there are many opportunities avail with the employees,

they always focus on grabbing the best opportunity, so it creates difficulty for the leaders to
retain talented employees in the workplace (Johnson, 2017).
Leading a team also one of the challenges that are faced by the leaders in today’s
business environment. The challenge relates to team building, team development and also team
management. Team building and team development is considered as the toughest job for the
leaders as there are many employees who have different behavior and attitude. There are various
strategies that are made by the leaders to lead the team, but in relation to all the strategies the
leaders cannot ensure that they will achieve success or not (Spears & Lawrence, 2016).
The control should be maintained over the activities of the company, so that effective
teams can be generated which help in boosting the productivity ratio in the high competition
level prevailing in the market. This challenge is faced in the countries such as Spain-40%, UK
20.8%, Singapore 17.9%, US 11.6%, India 13% and in China 10%. So, it can be stated that the
major challenge is faced in the UK market. The leaders in the UK market have to face the high
level of challenge in relation to controlling the operational activities of the companies in highly
competitive business world (Gentry, Eckert, Stawiski, & Zhao, 2015).
Development of the employees in the workplace is the challenge in which the emphasis is
given on different factors such as mentoring and coaching. It is investigated that for leaders it is
not an easy job to give coaching to the employees. There are many workers from different
background who have different mindset, so that challenge is faced by the leaders at the time of
explaining the organizational activities. Developing the employees simply means to enhance the
profits of the company. If the employees possess the skills that are required then they will be able
to give their best but for this the leaders have to face the challenge to give accurate information
in relation to the activities of the company (Herman, 2016).
The companies in today’s world have to face the challenge related with change. The
challenge relates with managing, mobilization and understanding the change. At the time of
implementing the change there are various issues that takes place such as employee’s reaction to
change and also to overcome the resistance to change. The leaders have to face the different
reactions of the employees and also their responsibility is to control the aggression and also
resistance in context to the changes made in the operational activities. It creates difficulty for the

leaders to deal with the resistance made by the employees at the time of changes made in the
workplace (Heifetz & Linsky, 2017).
Managing internal stakeholders is the challenge in relation to control the relations and
politics. The challenge that is faced relates with gaining the managerial support and also
managing the different departments, groups or the individuals. At the time of managing the
routine activities of the company this is also one of the challenges that take place. According to
the chart, it has been analyzed that managing the internal stakeholders and politics is the major
challenge that is faced in China, UK, Singapore and US. In China 17.2% are faced, Singapore
20.5%, UK 16%, US 24%. So, it can be said that the major challenge is faced in the UK market
(Gentry, Eckert, Stawiski, & Zhao, 2015).
