Airways is a huge business organisation engaged in providing services in airline industry. The
respective company has been established and headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It has
been considered as second-largest business organisation in UK, after easy jet. This report essay
will be comprised of insightful information and knowledge of management and leadership issues
or challenges faced by respective organisation (Bush, Bell and Middlewood, 2019). Furthermore,

British Airways is among leading companies in UK, engaged in providing airline services
to customers. For instance, respective organisation is operating with huge connectivity all around
the globe with enormous number of routes served to customers. It was founded in 25 August,
1919 in the name of Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited which further changes into British
Airways in the year 1974. Being a large scale organisation, a huge workforce is engaged in
carrying out operations and activities in workplace of respective organisation. As a result of
operating in dynamic business environment, management representatives of respective

organisation are determined at designing and implementing efficient strategies in order to cope
up with changes in business environment. It further facilitates in carrying out operations and
activities in an efficient manner with elimination of errors or deviations occurring in workplace.
Efficient management and leadership practices and activities plays a crucial role in managing
operations and activities being carried out in workplace. Moreover, it further contribute towards
development of positive and productive working environment (Golensky and Hager, 2020).
Management and Leadership has a huge importance in an business organisation in order
to ensure efficient completion of business operations and activities. For instance, it further
facilitates in encouraging and managing workforce to perform assigned tasks and responsibilities
in an efficient manner. Management is determined at improvisation and enhancement of various
factors engaged with core operations including Strategic Planning, Setting up of standards,
Controlling, etc. On the other hand, leadership contributes values towards communication,

and activities in order to accomplish defined goals and objectives. Representatives engaged in

particular situation. An efficient leader always looks out for individual development of
employees and organisation altogether. There are several key factors for efficient management
and leadership development in a workplace of business organisation. It initially starts with
understanding of need and requirement of leadership in a workplace in order to identify and
determine effective dimensions of a leadership model. For instance, it includes analysing
working environment of a workplace with consideration of operations and activities carried out
in the same (Alchin, Arthur and Woodrow, 2019). It will facilitate in identification of need of
leadership in that particular workplace. It is succeedingly followed by another key factor which
involves providing employees with clarity in roles and responsibilities in their assigned tasks.

decision-making authority to himself without delegating to other levels. For instance,
representative engaged in leadership practices in this style is aimed at assigning giving order to
employees without engaging them in decision-making practices. An autocratic leader is
determined at close supervision, commanding order from superiors, and specific direction.
Designing strategies and decision-making practices are considered by leader alone as he believes
that his decisions are most suitable and appropriate. Moreover, It further facilitates in quick
decision-making, executing action, as well as unity of direction in carrying out operations and
activities in workplace. Furthermore, it sometimes results in being a major issue in workplace as
it eliminates effective employee engagement in workplace.
Referring to respective organisation, implementation of this leadership approach will
directly affect working environment in workplace. For instance, it includes centralisation of
authority which directly neglects delegation of authority to subordinates in carrying out
operations and activities in a workplace. It further results in being a barrier in development of

Hammad, 2019). Moreover, positive impact of this leadership would be less time taken in
decision-making as it involves single individual engaged in designing and developing strategies
to be implemented in workplace. Furthermore, it lacks various different ideas and suggestions

other hand, employee engagement often result in consideration of most suitable and appropriate
ideas and strategies to implemented in order to cope up with current situation. Therefore, this
leadership style often results in various situations of manipulative practices with employees

Participative leadership style is also determined as democratic leadership style. For
instance, this particular leadership style facilitates in delegation of authority to subordinates
according to their roles and responsibilities in carrying out business operations. Moreover, it is
further determined at encouraging employees in order to be engaged in decision-making
practices carried out in order to develop efficient strategic planning. Employees or workforce of
a business organisation is allowed to express their ideas and opinions over a specific matter or
topic in order to consider most suitable and appropriate out of them. In addition to that, it results
in providing with better and creative ideas and suggestions in order to ensure increasing
efficiency and productivity in workplace. Furthermore, it contribute towards enhancement of co-
ordination and collaboration of employees in carrying out assigned tasks and activities in
workplace (De Oliveira, Cavazotte and Alan Dunzer, 2019). Therefore, positive initiative of
employee engagement taken into consideration in this leadership style lead to high motivation in
employees as well as reduction of employee turnover.

Participative leadership style will be a positive initiative towards the same. Moreover, It will

taken into consideration by leaders in order to improvise as well as enhance current scenario. In

goals and objectives. Therefore, implementation of democratic leadership style will result in a

Laissez-faire leadership is described as leadership style which avoids responsibility and
power to be delegated to workforce in a workplace. For instance, leaders in this leadership style
plays a minor role and let workforce develop their own goals and objectives. In addition to that,

provided with any sort of guidance or mentorship in carrying out operations and activities
(Megheirkouni, 2018). Moreover, belief of leader in this approach lies in letting employees or

guidance or direction. A laissez-faire leader believes that this leadership style often lead to attain

unnecessary or inappropriate approach of employees in carrying out business operations and
activities. Furthermore, it will result in degradation of efficiency and productivity in workplace
as well as ineffective coordination and collaboration of workforce in workplace. Therefore,
respective organisation is already facing several issues related to management and leadership
implied in workplace, implementation of laissez-faire leadership style will result in negative
impact upon respective business organisation.
Paternalistic leadership is determined as leadership style which includes a fatherly

his family members. In addition to that, a paternalistic leader always look out for providing his

rules, and procedures which help the organisation to stay organised and the cultural practice of
British Airways is based on the hierarchy system where the information is passed down from the
upper level of board of directors to the executive managers than to various departments with the

organisation is to work with everyone from different background, ethnicity, sex, age, culture and
religion by treating them in right manner and without any discrimination (Sanfelici , 2021).
Along with it, the company also focus on the customers by keeping them satisfied with
the help of their services. They also create a safe environment for all the customers so that they
can have maximum security at all time when customers board their plane. It also provide health
and safety for all customers that is why all the feel safe at all time while availing their services. It
looks after to both its employees and customers, in reference to both safety and good customers
service. The organisation also makes sure they provide a safe trip to its customers by checking
the plan twice before passenger starts boarding the plane and the they do not want to put their
passengers at risk in order to give customers the best experience ( Thompson , 2020).Various
issues related to equality and diversity with other leadership challenges are explained below-
One of the main issue is the strike, as the employees went on strikes this tend to affect the
passengers because they feel dissatisfied with the service of the airlines. According to
Topham G.(2019), the staff went on strike due to the cost cutting policies, lack of
confidence in management and also the basic management issues. Pilots also got affected
by this as the flights got cancelled (Why are British Airways pilots going on strike for the

Another issue is the uniform, many flight attendants say that it is one of the major problem as
the uniforms are not comfortable and safe. Some employees also wrote the current uniform
blouse is too transparent and not safe which is a serious issue of health, safety, dignity and

Along with it, the call centre of the chosen organisation is not being able to answer their
customers or put their customers on hold that is very disappointing for the customers
(Gagnon, Augustin and Cukier, 2021). As the call centres are meant to be help the customers

From the above analysis of the issues related to equality and diversity with other leadership
challenge, it has been recommended that leadership is said to be the important factor within a
workplace as it helps in resolving the various issues of the airlines. Proper management also

helps in enhancing the situations of the employees that will elevate the rate of retention. There
are some recommendations to the chosen organisation which are explained below-
With regards to staffing issue that was faced at the provided company i.e., British Airways,
suggestions relating to adopting effective workforce management techniques are being
recommended. It can be said that various decisions for the operational firm need to be adhered to
staff prospective. Under this proper meeting should be held that coordinates with staff’s choice
within the workforce. Through adopting communication through meetings managers of the firm
will be able to avoid internal conflicts in the operational firm and would enhance the productivity
of the business firm.
In reference to the above mentioned issue which was faced by the chosen organisation, the attire
should be comfortable and it must be available in the ready to wear style so that the staff get the
personalisation options. Basic garments must be used such as pants, skirts, shirts, scarf and many
other with the aim of adding elegance to the uniform.
Another issue was the call centre that can be resolved by giving importance to each and every
call irrespective of keeping them on hold. The staff must be trained properly so that they can
contribute more to the customers by treating them right. The chosen company can also make a
team with the aim of assuring the quality so that the calls will be monitored under a team.
Various levels will be checked by the team that is the protocol, etiquette and problem solving
skills. Along with it, the customers will also be provided multiple self service options such as
chat, voice respond system, self-service portal and many others .
