Cerebral Vascular accident (CVA) also known as Stroke is a common disease and highly
prevalent in most of the countries. It occurs when there is blockage in the arteries and the blood
is is not able to reach the brain. After heart disease and cancer, stroke is the third largest killer in
Canada, around 50, 000 strokes occur every year and can cause severe amounts of mental
disability after Alzheimer’s disease (Bodyandhealth.canada.com, 2019). Due to the high rate of
prevalence, it is necessary to look into this topic and it certainly needs some superior medical
intervention.
Cerebral Vascular Accident has quite a number of complications and devastating results
that includes muscle weakness, paralysis, problems with vision, abnormal or lost sensation on
one side of the body, difficulty speaking, confusion, severe headache, loss of balance and
coordination, and dizziness. The most common complication is paralysis or neurological
impairment, which needs to be the highlight of the leadership project outline. The neurological
impairment caused by the blood not being transported to the brain can also cause paralysis that
will stop the functioning of one side of the body. Due to the neurological impairment in people
suffering from stroke, they also suffer from depression and anxiety. Almost, one-third of the
people who suffer from epilepsy and seizures also suffer from depression and anxiety due to the
changes in the brain, as consequences of stroke (Kwon & Park, 2014).
Prevention is the main aim for people with stroke as the diet, obesity, lifestyle diseases
are the main triggers, which can increase the chances of suffering from stroke. Nurses can play a
major role in preventing the prevalence of stroke by helping in the secondary prevention by
spreading awareness in people regarding diet, lifestyle, elimination of tobacco and alcohol. They
can also help in primary intervention by making multidisciplinary groups and provide treatment
and advice. One of the actions could be starting exercise programs for people who are physically
