INTRODUCTION Leadership is explained as an action performed to guide group of people towardsaccomplishment of the desired goals. It is critical that operational activities of the entity shouldbe performed by carrying out the strategic planning. It will support in achieving required goalsand targets of the entity in successful manner (Karlsson, 2016). Present report is based on foodindustry and Dietary food Ltd has been selected for completing the project. This reportdescribes about different types of leadership styles and management theories that are used inorganization for executing business functions in effective way. In addition to that, differentapproaches of operations management which can be used in the entity for attaining the requiredmanufacturing functions have been mentioned in the report. Along with this this reportdescribes about key approaches of operations management and importance and value ofoperations management is also mentioned. Moreover, role of leader and functions of themanager also have been described as well as strengths and approaches of leadership arediscussed.TASK 1(a) Role and characteristics of leaders and managers Manager: A management is procedure of treating or controlling things or group of people.Leadership:- Leadership is an action of leading group of people or a company, or have abilityto do this.Dietary food Ltd is a leading food manufacturing company of UK which makes healthyfood products for the consumers. Low calorie sweetener products are manufactured by thecompany. Customised formulations and pack options are offered to buyers to suit their needs(Dietary foods limited. 2017). This organization is working in the food industry from the lastfour decades and sweeteners are being manufactured and packed by the organization. Managersand leaders play a critical function in executing business operations and all the requiredactivities are performed by them for adopting suitable and effective planning process (Galliersand Leander, 2014). Leaders and managers complete different types of functions and positive2

efforts are given by them which help them in meeting targets and goals that have been formedin the enterprise. Different functions that are being played by leaders and managers are asdescribed: -Managers of Dietary Food Ltd: - All the critical functions including planning,organizing, coordinating, controlling and monitoring are performed by the managers. Strategiesand action plans are formed on the basis of mission and the vision formed by the enterprise.Company focuses on maintaining high standards in their manufacturing activities and this is theonly reason that high quality products are being made by the enterprise (Holsapple, 2013). Allthe staff members are allocated specific task and works. Guidance are given to them forperforming their work on due time. Managers also do monitoring of work performed by them.In addition to that, all the business activities are performed by managers by scheduling theactivities according to the priority (Monczka, Handfield and Patterson, 2015). Managers areresponsible for communicating all required information, facts, details and knowledge which areneeded for executing the functions. Managers exercise power on people and helps in givingresponsibility to the subordinates. Leaders of Dietary food Ltd: - All the strategies and planning done by the managers areexecuted by leaders. They work for giving guidance and instructions to the followers. Leadersimplement all strategies and action plans formulated in the enterprise. They persuade thefollowers towards accomplishing a specific goal and they also take responsibility for achievingthe desired targets and set goals.(b) Role of leaders and managers in different situation in organization Dietary food Ltd is a leading sweetener manufacturing company of UK which offershealthy food options to its business consumers. Technical, financial and legislativedevelopments are implemented in the entity for completing all required business functions.Sweeteners are manufactured and packed by adopting a suitable and strategic approach and ithelps in making superior quality food products (Stadtler, 2015). Sometimes, critical andcomplex business situations are faced by leaders and managers that are working in the3

enterprise. They take strategic approach for resolving all problems which are being faced in theenterprise. For example, organization was facing issues due to lack of time management skillsin the employees. All the required functional activities are getting delayed and due to those problems wasbeing faced by management. Productivity and efficiency was getting hampered and profitabilityas well as financial revenues of the company also got influenced due to it. For solving theseproblems, leaders adopted autocratic leadership style and strict guidelines and instructions weregiven to the staff members for properly following the time schedule (Expósito, Gomez-Exposito, and Canizares, 2016). Under this leadership style, strict commands and orders aregiven to the subordinates and they are expected to follow all instructions and commands givenby the superiors. This method supported in resolving the issues which were being faced in theenterprise. In another situation, participative leadership style was used for taking suggestionsand recommendations from the subordinates (Turner, 2016). Under this style, employees areencouraged for giving their valuable recommendations which helped in identifying innovativeideas and concepts that can be used for making positive improvements in the existingperformance of staff members. Similarly, it is vital that specific task and duties should also beassigned to employees who are working in a team. System leadership style is also used by theleaders in which duties and task are allocated to staff members. In this leadership approachbehaviour and action of leaders is given more importance and followers follow the action asthat is completed by the leader. Personal qualities posses by leader play a significant role inenhancing the morale and motivational level of followers. In this technique leaders evaluateinformation by collecting data and information and it helps for making effective strategies forDietry food limited. Leader play significant role within an organization it make quick decision critical situation. Onthe other hand manager of cited organization role is to plan, control , direct etc. for Example,At the organization if manager make new strategy for increasing the sale, then leader role is toimplement those strategy in systematic manner within a firm. It need to encourage employee sothat they work according to strategy. In addition to this if manager of cited organization makesome limit and give authority to leader for making decision.
