Tesco focuses on providing value to customers by investing in upgraded or latest
technology. They basically build long term customer relationship through its supply chain,
internet as well as mobile marketing. Respective company aimed at high and middle class
families for which they introduced loyalty card to sustain the customers via offers and discounts.
Apart from all these measure Tesco faced various challenges in its growth stage some of them
are stated below.
Initially, Tesco targeted their market through physical or brick and mortar outlet. Then
with the era of digitalisation they made an innovative move by serving their customer through
online platform. Moreover, to widen their reach they used cheapest digital marketing tool that is
email marketing that cover huge segment at a time. Furthermore, email or mass mailing is an
effective tool that decreases the requirement of workforce or saves the cost of company by
making the long term relationship with company. But even after that they were not able to
capitalise over that because they faced the issue of invalid email address and bouncing back of
mails. Hence, to overcome this company conducted research and train their staff to work
efficiently in digital marketing tool (Case Study: How Tesco brought loyalty back to its stores,
2014).
Moreover, company faced repetitive complaint of customers against shortage of various
good. Tesco because of this hurdle was overburdened as they knew the problem regarding
shortage of good will lead to decrease in footfall of customers in their respective stores as

technology that keeps the supplier updated about the company's stock.
Tesco also faced huge challenges because of its neck to neck competitors. This lead to

Therefore, to minimise the challenges above mentioned company adopted various
strategies and solve them significantly. Among various issues one of the major challenge faced
by company is described below (Herrmann and Herrmann-Nehdi, 2015).
One of the biggest challenge faced by Tesco was on the basis of gender discrimination.
Respective company was offering different wages for the same work to its male and female
employee. Thus, male employee was getting high remuneration in comparison to female
employee. This case clearly depict that Tesco failed in abiding the labour law or uniform wages
law. Hence, it finally leads to protest of female worker against its biased policy along with that
worker of Tesco took legal actions against company on the basis of gender discrimination.
Hence, this protest finally leads to dispute, increase in turnover rate of worker also company was
losing its existing as well as potential customers.
Appropriate management and leadership style adopted by Tesco to overcome the challenge faced
by company
Management style: It is a form of practice used by managers to get work done from
employees. It plays an essential role to create effective relationship amongst the workers
working in the organisation. They should be made clear of the responsibilities and authorities so
that conflicts can be minimised. It is mainly concerned with the purpose of motivation and
improvement in their performances of employees.
Types of management styles are as follows
Autocratic style of management: Under this type of management style seniors take
decisions on their own. People working in the company have no power to put across their views
and suggestions. Superiors give orders to employees which they have to follow. They have to
adhere to rules and regulations creates by the employer. As a result of this it creates lack of
motivation and initiatives amongst workers. Deficiency of free communication can stop the
organisation from generation of new and fresh ideas that can be beneficial for its growth and it
will also lead to increased turnover (Belbin, 2012).
Democratic style of working: This sort of style is completely different from the
autocratic. It allows feedback, suggestions from employees. Here the employers are open to the
ideas and plans suggested by them. The ultimate decision is still in hands of superior only he
discusses everything before finalising something. Tesco used democratic style of management as
we can understand from case when the company faced issues in terms of gender disparity. They

heard voices from respective employees tried implementing measures to solve equal pay
disputes.
Paternalistic style: This style is concerned with bosses having power to take best
decisions for the organisation along with the employees. Under this also suggestions and
feedbacks are welcomed from their people working in the company. It makes sure that workers
feel motivated and should be treated on equal terms. They can rely on their superiors in case of
any problems that they are facing. This helps in reducing the employee turnover (Barna, 2013).
Collaborative management style: This leadership approach is similar to democratic
style but it differs from each other. This style helps mangers of TESCO to overcome challenges
that are faced by the employees and staff members of an organisation so that a peaceful
environment prevail within an organisation. Such as by allowing each and every employee in
equally participating in adopting appropriate decision as well as overcoming feedback so that a
best result can be outputted. Thus, in this a respective organisation can overcome such
challenges in an effective manner (Kliem, 2013).
Strategic management style: This style of leadership management helps an organisation
to make minute details on basis of task. If this management style is adopted by mangers of
TESCO then they will attain sustainability for longer period of time. For such instance, it will
help them to know the exact position of compilation of task in an appropriate manner. Thus, it
will create a comfortable assisting between mangers and employers with certain role and
responsibilities with each and every day task and activities of operating business in competitive
marketplace. Hence, in this way they can overcome challenges that are faced by an organisation
(Sanders, E. ed., 2012).
Leadership style: Adoption of appropriate leadership style helps in motivating
workforce, showing them right direction and implementing appropriate plan. There is various
leadership theory like situational theory, behavioural theory, management theory, participation
theory and so on. Among various leadership style company chooses the most favourable style on
the basis of structure and situation pertains within the organisation.

Participative leadership style: Participative leadership style encourages each and every
group member to contribute their effort while making decision. Herein, Tesco can enhance the
participation of their workforce including men and women employee so that each and every
member will remain connected to organisation. This leadership style can help respective
company to overcome the gender discrimination challenge and re-establish the trust of both
internal staff as well as customers (Maxwell, 2013).
Contingency theory: This theory state that particular leadership style cannot be suited for
all situation. There should be right balance between leadership style and situation to overcome
any challenge and achieve the objective of organisation. In this theory the role of manager is to
analyse the situation, need of follower and adjust effective leadership style on the basis of it.
Similarly, the role of leader is to motivate the effort of follower to overcome specific challenge
faced by company. For instance, if the employee is not satisfied with the rigid policy then the

leader can do some alteration in the policy so that they can make relationship with their
followers.
Situational leadership: Situation leadership theory suggest that leader must choose the
actions on the basis of situation. Thus, various leadership style can be more appropriate while
formulating any decision. For instance, if there is conflict among various department of
organisation a leader can try to reduce the communication between the department. So that
conflict can be minimised and better result can be achieved.
Relationship theory: This theory of leadership style helps respective company in facing
the challenges by formulating or strengthening the relationship between leader as well as
follower. This method inspires an individual to remain motivated and fulfil the task of
organisation for instance, Tesco on the basis of task assign uniform incentive like salary hike,
promotion, recognition and so on. Thus, manager of Tesco basically associates the incentive on
the basis of performance whereas leader inspire the member to enhance the performance of
overall group member.
Therefore, among various leadership style Tesco can adopt participative and relationship
leadership style. It helps company to strengthen the relationship between internal staff and
management which finally helps an individual as well as company to attain the objective of
organisation (Thompson, 2013).

Creating a team
Tuckman's theory for creation of effective team: Tuckman's theory includes five stage
that is forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning which help in development of
effective team.
Forming: Under forming stage, team member meets for the first time to work on a
project that leads to fulfilment of shared goal. At this stage leader plays a significant role in
guiding direction to the team members as they are unclear about the roles and responsibility.
Herein, Tesco uses this stage to assign specific task to team with similar capabilities, interest,
specialisation.
Storming: In storming group member gain better clarity about the task, objective, role as
well as responsibility. Here, team members put forward their opinion due to which conflict may
arise because of different opinion or while assigning status. Moreover, at this stage team leader
plays a significant role in maintaining the coordination and enhancing the performance of team.
In relation with respective company, the leader of group overcome the challenged faced due to
gender discrimination by assigning equal role and status on the basis of capability of a team

member. These changes helped both male as well as female employee by understanding and
socialising with each other (Honey and Kanter, 2013).
Norming: It is the third stage of team developing in which all conflict and clashes among
team members gets resolved because of their shared objective. Team member praises each other
strength, motivate each other as well as provide constructive feedback. Herein, Tesco at this
stage with the help of storming tries to develop strong commitment by making the uniform rules.
Hence, this process lead down the barrier of superiority among male and female employee on the
basis of remuneration.
Performing: This stage is a transition period as here group is more functional, each
individual performs their role and responsibility effectively to achieve the shared objective of
organisation. Herein, respective company leader motivated their team members and enhanced
the performance of team by formulating uniform policy on the basis of same work. This move
motivated the overall staff by enhancing the performance of workforce (Welch, 2014).
Adjourning: Adjourning is the final stage in which the team fulfil the purpose of its
formation. Once the purpose gets accomplished the team gets dissolved. Hence, this stage is
difficult for the team leader and member of Tesco who establish good informal relation by
working with each other.
Therefore, Tuckman's theory plays a valuable role in building valuable team with the
help of team leader that show a direction to company and helps in accomplishment the overall
objective of organisation (Baker and Hesmondhalgh, 2013).
