Managing of the Lean Project for FIFA World Cup 2018

This paper discusses about the management of the complex project like FIFA World Cup. The project is complex as it requires lean project management. The main feature of the lean project management is that the improvisation of the project is done on the basis of the requirements of the clients or the stakeholders related to the project. The paper also discusses about the different aspects of the lean project management and the significance of the application of the lean project management for managing the arrangement of the FIFA World Cup. It also discusses about the different project management methodologies applicable for the management of this project and the selection of the right methodology on the basis of the type of the characteristics of the project made the methodology.

Introduction
FIFA is the organizer of the football world Cup 2018. 18 countries are participating in the
event. There are various events associated with this project(Conforto & Amaral, 2016). It is the
main responsibility of FIFA to arrange all the events related to this project in a proper manner.
This paper discusses about the management of the complex project like FIFA World Cup
(Nicholas & Steyn,2017). The project is complex as it requires lean project management
(Carraher, 2015). The main feature of the lean project management is that the improvisation of
the project is done on the basis of the requirements of the clines or the stakeholders related to the
project(Nicholas & Steyn,2017). In this context the different aspects of the lean project
management has been done. Apart from that the significance of the application of the lean
project management for managing the arrangement of the FIFA World Cup has been discussed
(Silvius & Schipper, 2014). In order to select the right project management methodology
applicable for the management of this project, different project management methodologies
along with its characteristics has been discussed (Carraher, 2015). The selection of the right
methodology has been done on the basis of the type of the characteristics of the project made the
methodology.
Discussion
The main feature of the lean project management is that it allows the mitigation of the
wastage of the resources. Apart from that it also allows the modification and the improvisation of
the requirements based on the demand of the clients and the stakeholders associated with the
project. The lean project management can be applicable for arranging the FIFA world Cup as it
can be considered as the complex project management (Rolstadås et al.,2014). There are several
stakeholders and the events are associated with the project. FIFA has the responsibility to deliver

that outcome that will meet all the requirements of the stakeholders (Udawatta et al.,2015). This
includes proper arrangements of different matches, managing the security during the match and
providing proper accommodation and playing environment for the player(Conforto & Amaral,
2016). Apart form that the galleries should able to accommodate the large number of audiences.
Many of the audiences cannot be present during the match. The live telecast of the match is
needed to be done for them so that they can see the match from any parts of the world.
The lean project management principals can be applicable for managing the FIFA World Cup
2018. This will ensure the mitigation of the wastage along with the managing of the project
would be flexible so that it can adopt any change during the development process. There are
certain attributes those are needed to be considered during application of the lean project
management for the arrangement of the FIFA World Cup.
Voice of customers: The voice of customers are regarding the requirements for the
customer. It is concerned about the judgment of the customer regarding the quality of the
services provided to them(Conforto & Amaral, 2016). It is expected from FIFA that they will
provide the suitable environment for the footballers to play the matches and the management
regarding the managing of the audiences can be done in a proper way.
Critical to the requirements of the customer: This parameter indicates the analysis of the
requirements of the customers or the stakeholders related to the project (Aarseth et al.,2017). In
this case, the main stakeholders of the project are the audiences and the players. There are
internal and external stakeholders in this case (Carraher, 2015). The players can be regarded as
the internal stakeholders as they are one of the functioning unit of the happening of the world
cup. On the other hand the audiences can be regarded as the external stakeholders. In both cases
(Galeazzo, Furlan & Vinelli, 2014). FIFA has the responsibility to fulfill the requirements of the

stakeholders. In case of the audiences some of the audiences can come to the filed to see the
match(Nicholas & Steyn,2017). FIFA has to arrange the galleries in such a way that those
galleries can accommodate all the audiences (Davies & Brady,2016). On the other hand many of
the audiences will watch the match through television. In that case, the live broadcasting of the
show is needed to be arranged by FIFA so that the audiences can enjoy the show from any parts
of the world.
Critical to the parameter of quality: The quality parameter indicates the requirements
needed from the clients or the stakeholders associated with the project(Conforto & Amaral,
2016). In this context the expectation regarding the proper compilation of the world cup can be
done form the FIFA (Conforto et al.,2016). FIFA has the responsibility to deliver the standard
quality results to the audiences and the football players coming from different
countries(Galeazzo, Furlan & Vinelli, 2014). In order to do this the proper accommodation and
the playing environment is needed to be provided to footballers (Tenera & Luís Carneiro, 2014).
Apart from that from the audiences it is expected that they will provide the proper infrastructure
and galleries for watching the match in proper way (Aloini et al.,2015). Apart from that the
proper broadcasting of the live telecast of the matches is needed to be done so that the other
audiences around the world can watch the matches.
Managing the lean project: Lean project management is suitable for managing the complex
projects. The main feature of the lean project management is that it helps to mitigate the wastage
during the development of the project (Stark, 2015). The wastage here can be the wastage of the
resources and the delay in the time(Conforto & Amaral, 2016). Apart from that the flexibility of
lean project management helps to adopt any changes in the project development environment.

The lean project management can improvise the project management plan according to the
changing demand of the consumers.
According to the management of the lean project FIFA world Cup has the following modules
those are needed to be complied during the execution of the project.
 The scope of the project is complex as the stakeholders are involved for the different
aspects of the project.
 The timing and maintaining the schedule is important.
 There is a possibility that the scope creep may happen during the arrangement of the
project as the requirements of the different stakeholders are different.
 The broadcasting of the matches is needed to be done in a proper way so that all the
audiences over the world can watch the match (Conforto & Amaral, 2016). In order to do
this FIFA needs to cooperate with the different broadcasting Medias.
 The proper accommodation and the playing environment is needed to be provided to the
players so that they can play the matches in a controlled and specific environment.
 The security of the city and the venue of the match is needed to be ensured by the FIFA
and the organizing country.
In order to manage the arrangement of the FIFA world Cup certain project management
principal can be considered(Nicholas & Steyn,2017). Some of the project management principal
in these case has been discussed (Bucero & Englund,2015). The characteristics of each project
management methodology will help to select the right methodology for the arrangement of the
FIFA World Cup (Furterer, 2016).. Some of the project management methodologies which has
been discussed in this context are- PMBOK, PRINCE2, Agile, and Lean Six Sigma.

PMBOK:
Project Management Body of Knowledge is not a methodology but a standard guideline
for the development of the project. The guidelines defines the proper compilation of the projects
so that the project can deliver the right outcome (Galeazzo, Furlan & Vinelli, 2014). There are
five stages of project life cycle according to this project management methodology. At the
initialization phase, the gathering of the requirements are done (Verrier et al.,2014). Proper
documentation of the requirement gathering will help to eliminate the chances of the scope creep
in the project (Brioso, 2015). This stage is followed by the planning of the project. The planning
of the project is making the blue print of the execution plan of the project. The designing and the
execution phase of the project is concerned with the proper execution of the project modules
according to the plans (Verrier et al.,2014). The monitoring and control phase of the project is
concerned with the evaluation of the performance of the project (Rosa et al.,2016). The
improvisation is done on the basis of the results from the monitoring and control phase of the
project. The project closes with the closing or the ending of the project.
PRINCE2: PRINCE2 is the methodology that aloo0wed the development of the project in
controlled environment. The methodology is based on the seven processes and seven themes.
These are business, quality, progress, risk, plan and organization (Brioso, 2015). According to
this methodology in the team there should be a team leader and the project manager for the
development of the project. There are several stages for the implementation of the project
according to this methodology. The phase of the development starts with the initialization phase,
where the gathering of the requirements is done on the basis of the meetings with the clients
(Verrier et al.,2014). This step is followed by the planning and the designing phase(Conforto &
Amaral, 2016). This phase is concerned about the designing of the project and making the

execution plan for the compilation of the project (Verzuh, 2015). The control phase of the
project is concerned about making the linkage between the project manager and the project team.
In this methodology the stage boundaries are needed be handled in a specific way(Nicholas &
Steyn,2017). This kind of methodology is helpful for the construction project.
Agile project management is helpful for the development of the software projects. The
main feature of the agile project management is that the nature of this methodology is flexible
enough for adopting the changes in the environment (Verrier et al.,2014). The delivery of the
outcome of the project is done in the iteration. Feedback is an important component for this
methodology. The improvisation and the modification is done on the basis of the feedback from
the clients regarding different iterations.
Lean Six sigma is a method for managing the lean project management. The main feature
of lean six sigma project management is that it approves all the attributes of the lean project
management (Conforto & Amaral, 2016). The main feature of this project management
methodology is that it approves the mitigation of the wastage of resources for the lean project
management (Alias et al.,2014). Apart from that it also supports the quality and correctness of
the data and information(Nicholas & Steyn,2017). There are two components of lean six sigma-
lean and six sigma. In this methodology the team members and the project manager work
together to Achieve the objective of the project.
DMAIC:
DMAIC is a type of the application based on the six sigma approach. This tool has five
factors involved in the process which defines the scope and the objective of the project.

Define: This attribute defines the scope or objective of the project. In case of FIFA world
cup the identification of the scope or the objective of project is the proper arrangement of the
whole match (Verrier et al.,2014). The clarity in the scope or the objective of the project
enhances the success rate of the delivery of the outcome.
Measure: The scope or objective of the project is needed to be measurable. This
measures the objectives can be achieved in the reality. The objective of the FIFA world cup are
measurable based on the resources and the arrangement time.
Analysis: The analysis part is concerned about the analysis of the challenges and the
opportunities of the project. The proper analysis helps to identify the risks associated with the
project and proper mitigation plan can be adopted in this case.
Improvement: The improvisation of the tasks associated with the project helps to deliver
the accurate outcome at the end of the project. The improvement in this case can be done on the
basis of the feedbacks given by the clients.
Control: The control of the project is concerned with the control of the environment and
the preference of the project. In this case, FIFA has the control over the happening of the events
in the world cup. The organization has the responsibility to deliver the right outcome at the end
of the event.
Choosing right project management methodology for FIFA World Cup:
The selection of the right project management methodology for the FIFA world cup
depends upon the characteristics of the project. In the FIFA world cup the structure of the project
is complex. Apart from that the management of the project requires lean project management w.
The main characteristics of the lean project management is to mitigate the wastage of the

resources during the development of the project (Conforto & Amaral, 2016). On the other hand
the project management is needed to be flexible enough for adopting certain changes in the
course of development. Apart from that FIFA needs to deliver the right information regarding the
matches and happening of the events to the audiences and the players. In that case, the accuracy
of the data is needed to be maintained (Conforto & Amaral, 2016). Considering all these factors
it can be said that the adopting lean six sigma can be helpful for the development of the project
regarding FIFA world cup. In this case DMAIC tool can be used for the managing and
controlling of the project.
Conclusion
The discussion is regarding the project regarding FIFA world cup which is arranged by
the FIFA in 2018. Different aspects of the project management in this case has been discussed.
The managing of the project done in this case is the lean project management. The main
characteristics of the lean project management has been discussed in this case along with the
other characteristics. There are certain responsibilities of the FIFA those have been found in this
project. Different project management methodologies along with the components of the lean
project management has been done in this case. The selection of the project management
methodology has been done on the basis of the type of the project. It has been found that
application of the lean project management is suitable for managing the FIFA World Cup as the
complexity of the project is high. In this case the clarity in the scope and the objectives of the
project are needed to be maintained. DMIC methodology can be used in case of managing the
project in a proper way. It can be said the proper implementation of the lean project management
will help to deliver FIFA better arrangement of the World Cup. Aprt from that the outcome of
the delivery will meet all the requirements of the different stakeholders involved in the project.

However, the governance of the project is needed to be maintained in a proper way and the
