Business Process Management: Lean, Six Sigma and BPM

This article discusses the concepts of Lean, Six Sigma and Business Process Management (BPM) and how they work together to improve processes and reduce waste. It explains the benefits of BPM in accelerating Lean Enterprise Tools and how it helps in the process of improving the quality of the process of finding and removing errors and inconsistencies within a business, particularly in the manufacturing processes.

Lean:
The lean process was introduced by the auto giant Toyota of japan in the year of 1980
which covered all the facets of the manufacturing process in a business which covers the
quality assurance. The primary aim of the practice was to ensure elimination of the waste and
to reduce the costs and the time of the products being manufactured (Bhamu & Singh
Sangwan, 2014). The lean process helps the organisation to earn more profits by reducing the
manufacturing costs and recycling the waste products. This process is now widely followed
by many international manufacturing organisation as this process is very much simple to
execute.
Six Sigma:
The six sigma is one of the other major widely used and well recognised improvement
which allows the organisation to eliminate the defects in any process of manufacturing. This
was invented by the Motorola Organisation in the year of the 1985. Six Sigma, a disciplined,
data-driven approach, statistical-based and continuous improvement methodology The six
sigma have two methodologies namely the DMAIC that is the Define, Measure, Analyse,
Improve and Control and the secondly the DMADV that is Define, Measure, Analyse, Design
and Verify (Boakye et al., 2017). The process of implementing the six sigma is hard and
needs a specialised team that sole works for this process. Hence this is followed only in
special cases.
Business process management
The business process management can be explained as the discipline in the operation
by the management which is used for the purpose discovering, modelling, analysing,
measuring, improving and optimising and automating a business process (Jeston, 2014). The

process helps in the designing the blue prints of the improvements and then helps in the
process of the implementing the blueprint and design the changes that are needed to be
changed. The BPM also helps in the process of the monitoring and optimising the business
processes. The Business process management is one of the key features that has to be
properly implemented.
How lean and six sigma work in the process improvements?
The combination of the lean and the six sigma is one of the best methodology that is
known to the business world. IT is done in order to improve the quality of the processes and
reduce the amount of the waste that is generated (Vom, Petry & Gonser, 2016). The Lean Six
Sigma methodology generally relies on the team effort collaboratively. The team can work in
the process of systematically remove the extra waste that is generated and then reduce the
variation. The Lean Six Sigma works on 5s properties. These are
 Sort.
 Straighten.
 Shine.
 Standardize.
 Sustain
These helps the organisations to develop well defined plan and increase the
productivity of the organization with proper process of recycling the waste materials
and the improve the results of the productivity at the same time.

How can BPM accelerate Lean Enterprise Tools?
The use of the lean process in the business process management can help in the
process of the improvement. The lean six sigma is designed in such a way that it helps in the
process of the improvement of the quality of the process of finding and removing the error
and incontinency within a business particularly in the manufacturing processes. This helps
the business to ensure the cycle times and improve the customer services (Fullerton, Kennedy
& Widener, 2014). This helps in delighting the customers by solving the problems with speed
and quality and helps in the process of improving the business process flow and speed. It also
helps in the process to achieve the results in a very secure manner and hence provide the best
quality products to the customers.
