Abstract
Learning styles are the preferred ways through which a person can improve their learning
process and also enhance the way in which they acquire knowledge and retain it so that personal
and professional development can take place. It is therefore important that the learning style
which can help in improving learning i identified which can help in effective learning process. In
this report the types of learning styles, VARK model and its importance will be discussed along
with the strategies that can be applied for improving learning among students.

Introduction
Learning style refers to the consistent or preferential way in which a person absorbs,
processes, comprehends and retains information which help them in acquiring knowledge related
to a subject so that their personal and professional development can take place. Various factors
affect the way in which individual learning takes place like cognitive, emotional, environmental,
experiences etc. It is important that various learning styles are studied so that better
understanding of a subject or information can be developed in students which can help in
enhancing their learning process (Truong, 2016). In this report various styles of learning will be
discussed along with the main features of VARK model so that learning among students can be
improved. Along with this the various strategies which can be used to improve learning will also
be discussed in this report.
Literature Review
Various learning styles
As per the view of Madilyn, 2019, learning is an important process for people of all ages
as this help them in acquiring knowledge about new things which help them in their growth and
development with time so that they can live their lives more effectively. Learning helps a person
in acquiring new skills, ideas, language, concept etc. so that they can enhance their thinking
power which helps in their development. There are four basic types of learning which are visual
learning, audio learning, kinaesthetic learning and learning through reading/writing. All these
styles help a person in developing their intelligence through various ways like through videos,
audios, experiences or doing things, through reading or writing of internet articles, dictionary etc.
depending on the interest of an individual they can be made to learn about new concepts, ideas or
information which can help them in becoming successful in their lives (Ramírez-Correa and
Alfaro-Perez, 2017).
Multiple intelligences
As per the views of Eve, 2018, each individual has different ways of learning and
different intelligences which help them in living their daily lives effectively. Howard Gardner
identified seven distinct intelligences which enhance the learning process of an individual like
verbal-linguistic, mathematical-logical, musical, visual-spatial, bodily-kinaesthetic,

interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic and existential are the intelligences identified by
Gardner which help a person in learning based on their intelligence.
Memory retention and learning
According to the views of Kendra, 2019, learning and memory retention are closely
linked as the way in which learning takes place affects the memorising power of a person. In
order to retain the learned information it is important that effective learning style is used which
can help in building a long-term memory like focusing on attention, avoiding cramming,
elaborating and rehearsing, visualising concepts, reading out loud etc. are the ways through
which memory retention acne be improved.
Discussion/Analysis
A
Learning styles are the ways in which a person can acquires, processes, comprehends the
information which is given to them which help in creating their knowledge related to a subject
and help in their growth and development. The style of learning preferred by an individual
affects the way in which students learn, teachers teach and they both interact with each other. It
is important that the consistently preferred learning style of a student is identified which can help
in improving their learning and also they can develop conceptual knowledge about the
information provided to them (Buckley and Doyle, 2017). VARK model is important to be
understood so that the basic learning styles of students can be identified which are visual, audio,
reading/writing and kinaesthetic. These styles can help a student in learning better in the class so
that they can perform well and also acquire knowledge provided to them in class. The VARK
model was provided by Fleming and Mills in 1992 which helped in identifying the ways in
which learning can take place in students. This model can be used by the teachers so that they
can improve their teaching so that effective learning can take place along with better interaction
with students who can better understand the information and knowledge shared with them in
classrooms. This model can thus help in creating a more engaging environment in class from the
following styles of learning in VARK model:
 Visual learning: This is the type of learning in which student a student can better
understand and retain the information when it is provided in a visual form like maps,
flow-charts, diagrams, labelled diagrams, symbols etc. In order to enhance the learning of

these students the teachers can make use of technology, diagrams, videos etc. so that
better engagement of students can be achieved (Cheng and Chau, 2016).
 Audio learning: In this the students prefer to learn by active listening so that they can pay
attention to the teacher in class and understand the concepts being taught in the class. In
order to enhance the learning of these students the teachers can make use of audio
recording, variations in presentation of tones, pitch etc.
 Reading/Writing: This style is preferred by the students who are able to understand the
concepts well through reading or writing of articles, information, books etc. so that they
can learn and retain better. Teachers can provide handouts and encourage written
assignments in order to improve their learning (Hsu, 2017).
 Kinaesthetic learning: This type of style the learners can learn better by engaging
themselves in real life experiences so that they can use all their senses to improve their
learning. Teachers can use multimedia, tactical activities etc. to improve the learning of
these students.

Effective learning strategies must be applied by a person so that the learning process can
be made better along with improving the retention of information which is learned. The learning
strategies and techniques can help in making the learning fast and effective so that overall
personal and professional development of a student can be achieved through better learning.
Active listening, active reading, note taking, using multimedia platforms, setting clear and
SMART goals, peer teaching activities and deep learning are various strategies that can be
applied by a person so that the learning process can be enhanced.
Active listening: This relates to learning done by the way of listening actively to the person
who is delivering the information so that it can be understood in an effective manner. It is
important that active listening is practiced by students which can help in improving their learning
and memory retention process (Husmann and O'Loughlin, 2019).
Setting clear and SMART goals: It is essential that clear and SMART goals are set by a
person that helps them in concentrating their activities and improving their learning processes so
that their goals can be achieved. The goals must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and
time-bound so that better learning can take place along with the growth and development of a
person.

Multimedia platforms: In order to improve the learning process use of multimedia
platforms an be done so that better learning can take place through multiple media of
communication like audio, video, graphics etc. These platforms can help in providing multi-
dimensional learning top the students and help in improving their information retention so that
better learning can take place.
The students can thus implement various strategies to improve their learning which can
help them in learning and development so that they can deal with their daily activities in a better
manner. it can also help in making them more confident and continuously gaining new
information, skills, ideas which are important to remain competitive in the market so that success
can be achieved (Lee, Yeung and Ip, 2016).
Recommendation
From the above discussion it can be said that learning styles play an important role in
enhancing the learning process of an individual and improving the way in which they gain
knowledge. It is important that the preferred learning style of a student is identified which can
help the teachers in using effective method so that better engagement of students in class can
take place along with improving their learning. Following are the recommendations that can help
in improving learning:
 Including multimedia platforms so that better learning can take place based on the
interests of students so that their participation in learning can be increased.
 It is important that SMART goals are prepared by the students so that they can direct
their efforts in improving their learning process so that they can acquire better
information
 It is important that the preferred learning style is identified by student based on the
outputs achieved through various learning style so that it can be used while gaining
information, skills etc.
Conclusion
From this report it can be said that learning styles play an important role in the
development of a student by helping them in acquiring knowledge through their preferred
learning style so that they can become effective learners which can help them in succeeding in
their lives. It can also help them in evaluating ways though which they can generate knowledge

and retain it so that they can perform better while solving problems and gaining new skills and
information.
