A: Description of ADULT
The adult in question, who is in need of funding and comprehensive
assistance is Joseph – a 22 year old young adult, who was born with
Down syndrome. Down syndrome is characterized by a genetic
abnormality resulting in a range of developmental disabilities resulting in
hindrances to daily life functioning and loss of ability of an individual to
personally adhere to his or her advocacy, self care, employment and
financial needs. Joseph was born with this development disability and
lives with his parents. Despite being able to communicate quite fluently,
he really wishes to engage in an employment soon and move in with his
significant other – who is also suffering from Down’s syndrome. Hence, it
is evident that one of the key needs of Joseph is financial assistance
where he may be guided on how to personally engage in his financial
matters. Secondly, he will be required to fulfill his need of employment,
in order to feel empowered as well as sustain his new home and family.
Lastly, considering that he has just moved in and his developmental
delay may result in financial difficulties, his need of obtaining income
supports, may also need to considered.
B: Services/supports/funding for Adult
1st choice: Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)
Eligibility: Joseph is suffering from Down Syndrome, a
developmental disability, which will last a lifetime and
considerably limits his functional ability. Further, such
individual’s also need to be in possession of a financial need -
which is the affirmative in Joseph’s case, considering that he
will be living alone.
Usage: Income Supports services where Joseph and his
partner will receive substantial coverage of his housing, rent
and property tax needs, in the form of a Shelter Allowance.
2nd choice: Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services:
Adult Services
Eligibility: Adults with a developmental disability and aged
more than 18 years – applicable considering that Joseph is 22
years old and suffering from a developmental disability like
Down Syndrome.
Usage: Supplemental Protection and Advocacy Services
where Joseph will receive trained personnel assistance on
strategies underlying management of his personal finances,
learning how to utilize his legal rights and responsibilities,
being able to undertake independent decisions and
