Ban on Smoking by the Government
The subject of smoking tobacco inside the office building or in any enclosed public places was
being banned by the health department of Manitoba following the reason that vaping or any kind
of secondhand smoking causes the same health problem as that of direct smoking. Following
which the ban was implemented through the use of The Smoking and Vapour Products control
Act in the year 2004. The act was updated on October 1st, 2017, with which vaping and other
kinds of heating devices used for smoking have been included in the ban for use inside any
enclosed public place.
Old Habits Die Hard
Though there has been a general awareness of the restrictions on smoking inside the office
premises, it has been observed through the security camera system that there are some employees
who have been ignoring the system and have been smoking and using e-cigerettes and vaping
inside the office premises, in the corners, corridors and the landings of the staircases. This has
also been brought forth to the administration that excessive smoking has been deduced as the
premises becoming smoky and claustrophobic, especially for non-smokers.

The administration has decided that the law needs to be reminded of all the employees of the
company in order to communicate the gravity of the system. And in order to follow through, all
the departments are requested by the administration to set up individual departmental
committees, which will be responsible for dealing with the complaints regarding any kind of
smoking within the office premises. The step is deemed necessary for the benefit of every
employee of the office, not just the non-smokers, as vaping and e-cigerettes have been deemed as
big a risk as direct tobacco smoking. This committee will ensure that the employees and the
smoking conflicts are resolved, and the employees are not held up against the law, which can be
detrimental to their career.
