LGBTQ RIGHTS1
When and why did the gay community begin to become politically active in fighting for their
civil rights?
LGBTQ is an acronym for Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender together. The first
ever movement initiated by the community was the Gay Liberation movement which was took
place in the end of 1960 and continued till the middle of 1980. The aim of the movement was to
eradicate the discrimination based on the sexuality of and individual. Before the event took place
in the history, two genders were considered, male and female. Apart from this, anything was
treated as abnormality. Bisexuals and transgender were treated with hatred and negligence and
they did not have any right to the citizenship. They were devoid of the facilities that were
provided to the male and female genders (Gerstenfeld, 2019). This was very similar with the
American Civil Right Movement which took place to eradicate slavery for the dark-skinned
people in America. Like the Civil Right Promoted the rights for the deprived African natives in
United States, the LGBTQ Right fought for the rights of the Lesbian, gay, bisexuals, and
transgender present in the country.
How does the LGBTQ community differ from racial minorities like African Americans in
terms of their protections and legal status under US laws?
Both the LGBT community and the Racial Minorities are the part of the minorities
groups in America. However, in society, the race can be identified before sexual-orientation of a
person. Whether the person is African-American or not can be easily predicted from their outer
appearance, however, whether a person is homosexual or not cannot be identified in a crowd.
Thus sexual orientation can rise above the economic status and the social class much more in
comparison to the race and ethnicity (Ball, 2019).
