Literature Review of Retail Sector
In this study the retail sector of Australia is being reviewed by analyzing five scholarly
studies in which the basis details of those studies as well as their future relevancy for further
research is discussed.
Brady, C. S., Kamvounias, P., & Taylor, T. (2015). A model of supplier–retailer power
asymmetry in the Australian retail industry. Industrial Marketing Management , 51,
122-130.
Research Objective and Research Question
This paper discussed about the role of Power asymmetry to monitor the supplier and
retailer relationship, which is analysed in retail market. The goal is to examine the presence of
asymmetry of influence in an Australian sense and describe the influences on the sector (Brady,
Kamvounias, & Taylor, 2015). Power asymmetry is an inevitable consequence in the
company-retailer relationships in tightly regulated retail environments. Such asymmetry creates a
massive gap in deals, which can sometimes trigger the exchanges to go wrong, which in the
extreme case is a kind of market distortion. Sources of this problem are negative selection,
systemic risk, and technology monopolies (Australia: Emploement and Labour Law,
2019). The asymmetry of knowledge applies to quasi-economic behavior.
Research Method
Over recent years, a documentary study has been conducted using records from three
major supermarket retail inquiries. Such papers allowed investigators to gain knowledge into the
industry through public hearing document entries and transcripts. Data analysis is a method of
reviewing, cleaning, transforming and modeling data in order to discover useful information, to
inform inference and to facilitate decision-making (Wilkins & Wooden, 2014). There have
also been in-depth discussions with suppliers to the two large supermarket stores in Australia.
The discussions focused on the essence of the retailers ' relationships. The combination of these
two methods provided rich analysis of data.

Literature Review
The results support the existence of dominance asymmetry across several product
categories however, unlike other research, note that Australia's large supermarket stores are not
opposed to exercising coercive power with their own advantage Asymmetry of power and
control is likely to have come in nature as entities seek to gain more access to the limited
resources required for productive survival and reproduction (Western Australian
Government). Researchers suggested a concept of power asymmetry factors. The authors of
this article found that in this sense, the power dynamic is exacerbated by the tightly regulated
nature of the retail industry.
Conclusions
There is most an unwritten agreement in the retail business that partnerships will be
asymmetric among strong retailers including their vendors. Authors of this study concluded that
brief-term power asymmetry benefits customers, and that the long-term effects on the supply
chain could be harmful to Australia's grocery business when nothing is done to control the power
of the two large supermarket stores (Palmer & Atkinson, 2011).
Future Relevancy
This research may have few consequences in the future. An inference is implicitly
implied or happens. There are many common meanings of inference. The consequence of this
analysis is that future investigators should follow its findings as the proven principle of
identifying additional power asymmetry features among Australia's distributors and marketers.
Inside supplier-retailer partnerships, power asymmetry in tightly regulated retail markets is an
inevitable consequence (Miklosik, Evans, & Hasprova, 2018). Typically, implications are
outcomes or results that may happen in the future when used in plurality. The investigators can
also look forward seeing extending the same conceptual model to a larger sample in the potential
so that more tangible results can be obtained.
