LITERATURE REVIEW 1
Introduction
A pressure ulcer is defined as an injury which is a common problem faced by the
patients that occur from prolonged pressure on the human body. Such kind of injury mainly
develops on the skin which covers bony sections of the human body including hips, heels,
tailbone and ankles. The objective of this research is to review the previous studies based
on the pressure ulcer and identify the effective points about nursing education training on
pressure injury prevention.
Literature review and critical appraisal
The significance of the literature review is to evaluate the recent studies by
identifying main points and outcomes of the investigations. Using an appropriate literature
review, the strength and weaknesses of the previous studies can be evaluated.
The critical appraisal is an effective way to evaluate the studies before processing
the actual research as it identifies the main points and techniques highlighted by the
writers along with the appropriateness of the research. Therefore, it is reported that using
critical appraisal the researchers can reduce research gaps and complete the research in an
effective manner.
Article 1: Study protocol of a cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating the
efficacy of a comprehensive pressure ulcer prevention program for private for-profit
nursing homes
This paper was written by Enid and other writers in the year 2016. The aim of the
paper is to produce a pressure ulcer prevention program for-profit nursing homes (Kwong,
Lee, & Yeung, 2016). As per the writers, pressure ulcers are common healthcare problems
which are linked with the quality of care provided in the nursing home setting. In order to
complete the research, the writers included various methods such as qualitative design,
inductive approach, research philosophy, primary and secondary data collection
techniques and statistical analysis process. A survey through questionnaire was adopted in
order to review the viewpoints of the participants about pressure ulcer. It is found that for

addressing pressure ulcer it is significant to develop a prevention program for the nursing
homes setting. The developed program in this study will enhance the skills of care staff on
the reduction of pressure ulcers in nursing home settings. The major strength of this paper
is that it provided depth information about pressure ulcer that managed research gaps but
the writers did not conduct a literature search in the research.
Article 2: TEAM-UP for quality: a cluster randomized controlled trial protocol
focused on preventing pressure ulcers through repositioning frequency and
precipitating factors
The aim of the article is to examine how changes in medical severity communicate
with changes in risk level and repositioning schedule for predicting and managing pressure
ulcers (Yap, et al., 2018). According to the writers, a pressure ulcer is a serious problem for
nursing homes as it can lead to septic infections and chronic wounds related injuries in the
body. The writers adopted a cluster randomized study where a survey was conducted for
obtaining effective data about the research topic. The writers used both primary and
secondary methods for obtaining larger data in regards to the pressure ulcer. It is found
that effective prevention and training can help to reduce the level of pressure ulcer and
avoid treatment costs easily. The strengths of the paper include reduced research gaps,
enhanced research quality by including effective methods, and highlighted complete
information about the research topic and many more. However, the writers did not provide
alternative prevention programs for managing the problem of pressure ulcer that produced
gaps in the research.
Article 3: Effectiveness of Pressure Ulcer Prevention Strategies for Adult Patients in
Intensive Care Units: A Systematic Review
The objective of the paper is to synthesize the evidence about the effectiveness of
strategies developed to manage the pressure ulcer injury (Tayyib, & Coyer, 2016). The
investigators examined that pressure ulcers are linked with the health burdens that may be
preventable by using effective approaches and strategies. A research strategy was adopted
for retrieving investigation published in the past years in regards to the pressure ulcers.
There are various methods were adopted including quasi-experimental, randomized
controlled trials and comparative investigations. Data and facts were obtained through

the reduction of pressure ulcers in nursing home settings. The major strength of this paper

secondary methods and analyzed using content analysis techniques. It is found that the
writers provided a way to enhance skills in regards to the pressure ulcer and manage such
health problems effectively. However, the researchers did not include negative impacts of a
pressure ulcer on the human body due to which the readers are not able to evaluate the
other health issues linked with the pressure ulcer.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that pressure ulcer is a serious problem that can be managed by
implementing effective strategies and prevention programs in nursing home settings. The
conducted literature review and a critical appraisal helped to enhance skills in regards to
the pressure ulcer and evaluated the findings of recent papers. Therefore, it is reported
that the previous studies provided complete information about pressure ulcer and
